Chapter 1 A big-time bastard

Chapter 1 April 24, 2021.

Night View in New York.

The breeze was perfect to make Avery's heart skip a bit. She stood on the terrace of the bridge while enjoying the night view. That was exactly what she needed at that moment. Even though she was jet-lagged for 21 hours, she just couldn't help but to stop by the bridge as it helped to reduce the weight of her troubles. Avery took her phone and almost immediately her eyes got glued to her wallpaper, it was the happiest moment of her life. "Jake, thanks for loving me for who I am." She thought with a slight smile, even though her marriage wasn't going the way she had hoped it would go, she couldn't hope for more as she was absolutely nothing without Jake.

Throughout the two years of her marriage, her husband had been the only person who believed she could be a painter. Even her family never had a tiny hope for her.

Avery's gaze met with a moon that seemed to be slightly different from the moon she had been seeing, it was shining brightly and bigger. "Am I overthinking things?" She thought to herself when a dinging sound was instantly heard on her phone.

She hurriedly checked her phone but what caught her gaze was a big rejection from the company she had applied for. Jake had booked the flight for her with the only aim of her being to go after her dream. "Miss Avery, our company is truly sorry to inform you that you didn't meet the requirements of our company's standard."

Avery held her throbbing heart in pain she had never felt and was very remorseful of herself since she had gotten countless rejections, but getting it from her dream company hurt the most that she couldn't help but to let out tears. Her mood was totally ruined, already leaving her with nothing but to carry her luggage and make her way home. Avery had always dreamed of being big throughout her youthful days. She was known as a nerd who focused more on her studies than anything else. She had always hoped to be working as a painter in her dream company while her husband would be working also, but it seemed like heaven was definitely making a mockery of her. "Guess I'm meant to be a full housewife!" She thought sadly as she walked down the streets of New York like a lost puppy.

By the time Avery got to her residence, everywhere was dark and so silent. Until then, she realized she had never informed Jake about her arrival in New York.

"Well, I'll just surprise him!" Avery thought and instantly wiped away the sadness on her face while she replaced it with a slight smile before making her way inside.

Immediately, Avery pushed the door open, she glanced everywhere and the thing that caught her attention was the cake on the table which had something scribbled on it.

"Happy girlfriend's day, baddie". Avery was confused that she had to check whether she had not entered the wrong place. She was so sure it was her matrimonial house. She stepped inside the sitting room and the first thing she stepped on was a bra which she bent over to pick up. She was so sure it wasn't hers. Avery could see scattered clothes and undies on the floor, and she had to begin tracing them one after the other which led to the bedroom, her matrimonial room. Shivers ran down her spine as she began hearing soft moans. The moan seemed to be in ecstasy and so that she had to close her eyes for a second and take her breath.

"He could be watching some movies," Avery reassured herself with confidence. She was a hundred percent sure that her husband wouldn't do such things to her.

"Jake has always loved and cherished me," She thought.

"Even when he never spends time with you, you still think he cherishes you?" Avery could hear her subconscious mind making fun of her.

Avery waved the thoughts away instantly and pushed the door when she suddenly heard the conversation between the people inside the room.

"Jake, when are you planning on divorcing that ugly duck, I'm dying of waiting to have you to myself!" Said the girlish tone.

"Come on babe, I spent most of my time with you instead of her, doesn't that show you're my priority?" Avery's mouth was slightly parted so that she was instantly covered up with sweat.

"Those voices sound familiar." She thought, but that was just a thought she needed to see with her two eyes just to be sure she wasn't articulating.

"Had it been I knew you were a baddie with an innocent appearance I would have chosen you instead of that nerd."

"Seriously, I gave you thousands of signals, but guess you really want to be with a nerd."

"What could I have expected from an innocent girl with an innocent appearance like you? Don't worry, I'll get it done as soon as possible!" Avery couldn't hear anything else, and she was sure they'd started something else. With curiosity, she gently pushed the door open.

Tears mixed with sweat gathered on her face, attaching her hair to them. Avery could only hear her heart racing out of fear at the thought of being caught by the two people running after her. Avery could only run, gathering all her remaining strength to run despite the ache threatening to stop. She turned back, but she couldn't see the two figures running after, which made her relax a bit as she slowed down to catch her breath.

“You're a bastard Jake!”

“A big-time bastard!” Avery cried out in agony as she tried going ahead even though she had nobody else's place to go.

“Ouch!” Avery groaned in slight pain. Her feet had already become sore from all the stress. Avery bent slightly to touch her sore feet, but she ended up hissing slightly in pain. Lifting her head, her gaze met with the shadow of a strong man, which made her so frightened that she instantly made to turn back, but it was exactly the same.
