I woke up before the sun, the air still soft with that pale blue that comes right before daylight cuts in. For a few seconds, I didn’t know where I was. My mind reached for the familiar weight of a blanket, the sound of dorm pipes creaking, the smell of Hawthorne’s stone and old pine.

Instead, I smelled moss. Wet earth. Kellan’s skin.

And then every memory from last night hit me in one long, crushing wave.

We’d had sex. Not frantic fumbling or half-clothed or stopping before we crossed some invisible line. Real sex. His body under mine, and both of us tangled up until everything else fell away.

And we’d fallen asleep out here like idiots, naked and tangled together on damp moss, his thigh thrown over mine like he owned the right to touch me in his sleep.

I didn’t move. For a long moment, I just watched him.

His face was relaxed, mouth soft and parted in a way that made my chest feel too full. His curls had fallen over his forehead again. The early light caught the faint bru

It's not always easy to accept who you are and what (or who) you want. Especially if your whole life you've been told you are something different and are only allowed to want the opposite of what you do.

The Great Hall always felt cavernous and empty. The tall stained-glass windows, backlit by the late afternoon sun, spilled a kaleidoscope of light across the marble floors. I stood by the dais, hands on my hips, steeling myself not to glance over at the far end of the room, the spot where I’d last seen Ronan last night. He hadn’t returned to the dorm after dinner. Or if he had, he’d damn well made sure not to run into me. “Focus, Kellan,” Elias said, poking the end of his quill at my temple. “Unless you want Nora and me to make this entire ballroom drip in obsidian and rose thorns.” “I kind of like that aesthetic,” Nora said, her eyes shining as she snapped her notebook closed. “Very goth romance. Could be a great way to ward off the Everley mean girls.” “Which is exactly why we’re not letting them anywhere near theme decisions,” Maeve said, cracking her knuckles as she stared up at the high ceiling. “Last time Cassia was on a planning committee, she tried to glamor the lights int

I moved closer. Heart thundering. “It is. Is it not? If it’s not, then you need to stop looking at me like you want to rip my clothes off when no one else is around.” His nostrils flared. “And if I do want to rip your clothes off, then what? What the hell am I supposed to do with that, Kellan? Be your dirty little secret? Watch everything I’ve built for myself get incinerated because I couldn’t control my fingers?” I didn’t flinch. But he hit me hard, anyway. “I’m afraid,” he growled, quieter now. “I’m not afraid of you, Kellan. I’m afraid of what this means. For me. For my standing at Bloodpine. My father already thinks I’m not cut out for much. If he even gets wind of—” “I know.” I didn’t let him finish. “You think I’m not afraid of that, too? I was a second son, for Christ’s sake. A spare. A background character who was good at not sticking my neck out. This, us, this isn’t sticking my neck out. This is the bloody tsunami.” Ronan’s eyes held mine, like he was seeing me in

It didn’t end because we wanted it to. It ended because Professor Zimmer came into the greenhouse with a load of potion herbs, and nearly dropped them all when she saw our shadows plastered together against the glass. Ronan and I flung apart like we’d been snapped by competing magnets, sending a tray of moonvine clippings crashing to the floor. She raised a brow, huffed something about idiot wolves thinking her lab was a mating den, and told both of us to fuck off before she cursed us to a lifetime of erectile dysfunction. We left in opposite directions. Not because we were avoiding each other. Not even close. More like we were one more breath away from doing something obscene on Sara Zimmer’s countertop, and neither of us had the good sense to stop. I didn’t sleep that night. I tried. Lying in bed and staring up at the runes carved into the ceiling beams, I counted each inhale because it might quiet the storm beneath my skin. But it didn’t. I could think about nothing but Rona

I didn’t follow him when he pulled back. I could’ve. Part of me wanted to. But I stood there, panting, vibrating with all the things we should’ve said until the cold wind whipping off the ridge cooled the burn under my skin. Kellan hadn’t rejected me. Not really. He just… he’d stopped it before we went too far. Before we crossed a line neither of us could find our way back from. Still hurt like hell. Still made me feel like a monster in borrowed skin. By the time I returned to campus, I was a wreck. I didn’t sleep. Couldn’t. Closed my eyes and saw him. How his hand had trembled when it slipped under my shirt. How he’d gasped when I touched him like he mattered. How he’d looked at me when he stepped back, like I’d cracked something open inside him. And all I could think about was her. So, after breakfast, I found her. Tamsyn was in the Hawthorne lounge, lounging across the hearth like she’d crawled out of one of her own tragedies. A couple of her packmates sat at a nearby

I’d barely made it five steps into the common room before Maeve Holloway intercepted me like a sentry on a mission. Her braid was looped in a crown around her head, her expression already brimming with the exact kind of chaos I didn’t have the patience for today.“Don’t say no yet,” she warned, finger raised. “Hear me out. Then you can throw yourself off the balcony.”I arched a brow, tugging my hoodie sleeves past my knuckles. “Always inspiring confidence, Holloway.”She launched into it anyway. “The council is throwing a Valentine’s Day Ball. Mandatory attendance unless you’ve got a death certificate, a valid portal malfunction excuse, or proof you’re already bonded and gross.”“And let me guess, they put Hawthorne House in charge of the planning?”“Technically, no. They tried to stick Everley with it, but Isolde Delmar’s been on a power trip since the winter massacre. She pitched a full-blown Heart & Thorn theme and bribed two of the Everley girls, Sera and Nadine, to get on board.
