Chapter 4 The First Encounter

last update 게시일: 2026-08-31 18:41:23

The snowy clearing became a vacuum, all the ambient sounds of the Whispering Woods sucked into the sudden, suffocating tension between the two leaders.

Astrid did not answer the vampire’s taunt.

Instead, her body reacted on pure instinct.

With a sharp, guttural growl, she let the power of her lineage surge beneath her skin.

The muscles in her shoulders and arms expanded, tearing slightly through the seams of her tactical vest.

Her fingernails elongated into thick, obsidian claws that gleamed with a lethal sharpness, and her elongated fangs pressed hard against her lower lip.

Behind her, Torin and the vanguard bared their teeth, their bodies half-shifting into their monstrous, predatory states. The air grew heavy with the musky, aggressive heat of the pack.

Carmilla, however, did not flinch. She stood in the deep snow as if she were standing on a ballroom floor, her porcelain face a mask of absolute, unbothered serenity. Only the slight, lazy tilt of her rapier betrayed that she was prepared to kill.

"Stand down," Astrid commanded her vanguard, her voice dropping into a deep, gravelly register that vibrated through the snow underfoot.

"Alpha?" Torin hissed, his eyes wide, his body vibrating with the desperate urge to launch himself across the clearing.

"She's alone. We can end the Dracul line right here."

"I said, stand down," Astrid repeated, casting a sharp, burning amber glance backward.

"She is mine. If any of you interfere, I’ll throw you to the outer packs myself."

Carmilla raised an eyebrow, a faint, mocking smile touching her blood-red lips.

"Fierce. It seems the little puppy has grown some teeth since we last met at the altar. Let us see if you actually know how to use them, Moonvael."

The provocation was the final thread to snap.

With an explosive burst of speed that kicked up a massive cloud of white powder, Astrid launched herself across the clearing. She was a blur of silver-grey motion, her claws extended, aiming directly for Carmilla’s throat.

To a human, Astrid’s movement would have been completely invisible. To Carmilla, it was perfectly trackable.

The vampire commander vanished from her spot, slipping sideways with a liquid, weightless grace that defied gravity.

Astrid’s claws sliced through empty air, shearing the bark off a massive pine tree behind where Carmilla had just been standing.

The wood groaned, splintering under the sheer force of the impact.

Before Astrid could reset her footing, a flash of silver steel cut through the dim light. Carmilla’s rapier lunged forward, a precise, blinding thrust aimed squarely at Astrid’s exposed flank.

Astrid’s predatory instincts saved her. She twisted her torso mid-air, the tip of the vampire's blade grazing the side of her tactical vest, tearing the heavy fabric but missing the flesh beneath.

Astrid spun on her heel, using the momentum to sweep her arm in a massive arc, her claws whistling through the air as she tried to disembowel her opponent.

Carmilla parried.

The sound of Astrid's obsidian claws colliding with the ancient, enchanted steel of the rapier was like a thunderclap in the silent forest.

Sparks flew, casting brief, brilliant shadows against the white snow.

The force of the blow was massive—enough to shatter a human’s bones—but Carmilla absorbed the impact effortlessly, her frozen muscles locked in place as she held Astrid’s hand back with the flat of her blade.

For a fraction of a second, they were locked in a stalemate, mere inches apart.

Astrid could smell her. Up close, the scent of dead winter roses and cold ozone was so overwhelming it made her inner wolf whine in a strange, dizzying confusion.

She looked down into Carmilla’s face. The vampire was completely pale, her skin flawless, her crimson eyes wide and reflecting the amber glow of Astrid’s own.

There was no pulse in Carmilla’s neck, no heat radiating from her body. She was death incarnate.

Yet, as Carmilla stared back into Astrid’s eyes, her crimson pupils dilated slightly. The vampire felt the raw, thrumming heat of Astrid’s life force—the loud, chaotic beat of her heart, the burning warmth of her skin. It was an intoxicating, vibrant contrast to the stagnant, frozen existence Carmilla had known for centuries.

"You are strong," Carmilla murmured, her voice a quiet whisper that only Astrid’s sensitive ears could catch over the rushing wind.

"A pity I have to break you."

"Try it," Astrid snarled.

With a sudden burst of raw, Lycan strength, Astrid shoved upward, breaking the weapon lock. She followed up with a vicious combination of strikes—left claw, right claw, a spinning kick aimed at Carmilla’s ribs.

Carmilla danced backward, her feet barely leaving a trace on top of the deep snow.

She parried every strike with microscopic precision, her rapier moving like a silver blur, deflecting the lethal claws with rhythmic, metallic rings.

They were perfectly matched. Fire and ice, clashing in a deadly, beautiful dance. Every time Astrid pushed forward with her brutal, overwhelming power, Carmilla neutralized it with her flawless, fluid technique.

Astrid was breathing heavily now, her chest heaving as her internal furnace burned through energy.

Carmilla stood completely still, her breath nonexistent, though a thin sheen of frost had settled over her dark hair.

"Is this the extent of the Moonvael legacy?" Carmilla taunted, though her voice lacked the genuine venom it had possessed at the beginning of the fight.

"Your father fought with more conviction."

"Don't you dare speak of my father," Astrid roared.

The grief and anger she had been suppressing for months exploded.

Her inner wolf took full control, a wave of primal power washing over her. She lunged again, but this time, her movements weren't just fast—they were completely unpredictable. She dropped low, sweeping Carmilla’s legs.

Caught off guard by the sudden shift in rhythm, Carmilla lost her perfect balance for the first time.

She fell backward into the snow, but as she fell, she brought her rapier up defensively.

Astrid pinned her. She threw her heavy weight on top of the vampire, her knees locking Carmilla’s hips to the ground.

She pinned Carmilla’s right wrist to the snow, forcing the rapier aside. With her left hand, Astrid formed a vice-like grip around Carmilla’s cold, elegant throat, her sharp claws digging lightly into the pale skin, just enough to draw a single, tiny bead of dark, immortal blood.

The vanguard cheered in the distance, a triumphant howl rising from Torin’s throat.

But down in the snow, the triumph vanished.

Astrid looked down at the woman beneath her. Carmilla was at her mercy. One hard squeeze, one deep slash, and the Grand Commander of the Obsidian Coven would be dead.

The prophecy would be half-fulfilled.

Yet, as Astrid stared into those fierce, unwavering crimson eyes, her hand began to tremble. Her inner wolf completely stopped snarling.

Instead, the beast inside her went entirely silent, resting its head against the bars of her consciousness, feeling a profound, inexplicable sense of belonging.

The magnetic pull in her chest was deafening now, a physical ache that begged her not to harm the creature beneath her.

Carmilla stared up at her, her throat held in a lethal grip, yet there was no fear in her expression.

There was only a deep, stunned realization.

She could feel the wild, erratic racing of Astrid’s heart against her chest.

She could feel the fierce protection radiating from the Alpha.

For the first time in her immortal life, Carmilla didn't see a rabid beast. She saw a soul. A beautiful, burdened soul that mirrored her own.

Neither of them moved. The universe seemed to hold its breath around them.

"Alpha!" Torin’s voice suddenly shattered the silence, his footsteps crunching loudly as he stepped into the clearing.

"Finish her! Take her head!"

The sudden noise broke the spell.

Astrid blinked, reality crashing back into her mind. She looked at her claws, then at the tiny bead of blood on Carmilla’s throat.

A wave of intense confusion and panic washed over her. She couldn't do it. She couldn't kill her.

Before the vanguard could realize her hesitation, a high-pitched, piercing whistle echoed from the southern treeline.

A volley of black-feathered arrows, tipped with gleaming silver, rained down into the clearing.

"Ambush!" Torin yelled, drawing his knife to swat an arrow out of the air.

Taking advantage of the distraction, Carmilla used her free hand to plant a firm push against Astrid’s chest.

She didn't use her claws or her blade to harm her; she simply shoved her away with enough force to slide Astrid across the ice.

Carmilla flipped to her feet in an instant, her blood-red coat swirling around her. Out of the shadows of the southern trees, a dozen vampire elite guards materialized, their bows drawn, their eyes fixed on the wolf vanguard.

Astrid scrambled back to her feet, her warriors immediately forming a protective wall in front of her, weapons drawn.

The two forces stood in a tense, deadly standoff, ready to slaughter one another at a single command from their respective leaders.

Carmilla looked across the clearing, her eyes ignoring the vanguard entirely to lock onto Astrid.

She touched her throat where the tiny drop of blood had formed, her fingers coming away stained dark.

She looked at the blood, then back at the Alpha. There was no anger in her gaze—only a silent, heavy question.

"Withdraw," Carmilla commanded her guards, her voice cold and absolute.

"Commander?" her vanguard captain questioned, shocked. "The wolves are vulnerable—"

"I said, withdraw," Carmilla repeated, her crimson eyes flashing with a terrifying authority that brooked no argument.

"The territory is compromised. We return to the citadel."

Without another word, Carmilla turned and melted back into the dark shadows of the pine trees, her guards following her like ghosts until the southern woods were entirely empty.

Astrid stood in the snow, her chest heaving, her claws slowly retracting back into her fingers.

"Astrid," Torin said, stepping up to her side, his face pale with confusion.

"You had her. Why did you hesitate?"

Astrid looked down at her hands, still feeling the lingering frost of Carmilla’s throat against her palm.

The scent of dead winter roses still hung thick in the air, refusing to wash away.

"The snow," Astrid lied, her voice hollow as she stared into the empty woods where her enemy had vanished.

"My footing slipped. Let's get back to the village."

As they turned to march back into the safety of their territory, Astrid kept her head down, her heart heavy with a terrifying realization.

She was the Alpha. She was born to destroy the coven.

But as she looked into the dark spaces between the trees, she knew, with absolute certainty, that she would never be able to kill Carmilla Dracul.

The smooth, venomous laughter echoing down the volcanic corridor belonged to Lady Cynthia Bathory, but she wasn’t the only one waiting in the damp shadows of the lower keep. As the thick iron doors at the end of the hall slid shut, trapping Astrid and Carmilla inside the deep subterranean sector, a dozen elite guards of the Bathory personal vanguard materialized from the gloom. Their iridescent violet armor gleamed maliciously in the pale blue firelight, and their hands wielded long, silver-tipped pikes designed to keep a Lycan Alpha at bay. "A touching display of feral devotion, Moonvael," Cynthia purred, stepping forward from the ranks, her red velvet gown trailing gracefully over the blood-stained stone. She raised her left hand, a thin, liquid coil of sanguimancy rising from her palm, its dark mass twisting like a snake. "You tore through the outer gates like a rabid beast, but you have walked straight into the slaughterhouse. The Council’s purification decree will simply claim

  • Eclipse of the Blood Moon   Chapter 28 Jailbreak

Astrid Moonvael did not learn of Carmilla’s imprisonment through the whispers of her pack elders or the mechanical surveillance of Lord Gorgon. She learned it through her blood. The magnetic pull right behind her ribs—the phantom tether that had bound her to the vampire commander since the subterranean cavern—suddenly snapped taut like a plucked bowstring. A violent, icy shockwave of sheer terror and physical agony rippled through the connection, hitting Astrid’s inner wolf with the force of a localized earthquake. The beast inside her instantly reared onto its paws, throwing its head back in a desperate, silent howl that echoed through the empty chambers of her mind. She's bleeding. They're draining her. Astrid didn't gather her vanguard. She didn't call for Torin. She knew with absolute, brutal certainty that if she asked her pack to march on the Citadel of Spired Shadows for a vampire, she would face an immediate second mutiny. This was a debt of the soul, a treasonous crusade

The cells beneath the Sanguine Basin were not built to contain flesh; they were designed to drain immortality. Known as the Solar Crypts, the walls were constructed from heavily magnetized, reflective iron that amplified even the weakest trace of light. High above the vaulted ceiling, a series of complex prism glass shafts cut straight through the mountain stone, catching the absolute first rays of the rising sun and funneling them down into a blinding, concentrated beam of pure sunlight that danced across the floor like a golden executioner’s axe. Carmilla Dracul stood in the center of the reflective cell, her arms suspended high above her head by a pair of heavy, silver-plated chains anchored to the ceiling. The enchanted metal bit violently into her white wrists, a constant, low hiss of white smoke rising from her skin as the silver fought against her pureblood regeneration. She wore only a torn, sleeveless white tunic and trousers, her formal combat vest and her newly forged ra

The Great Hall of the Silvertooth Pack had been stripped of its tables, its mead skins, and its warmth. Tonight, it was a court of judgment. A massive circle of crushed white stone had been laid out across the center of the wooden floor—the Challenge Ring, a sacred boundary where blood was paid for leadership, and where the laws of the moon were enforced with teeth and bone. The council elders sat high on the tiered timber benches, their faces carved from stone and shadowed by the dim orange glow of the surrounding iron braziers. At the podium stood Madox. He had discarded his elder’s robes, wearing only heavy leather loincloth guards and iron gauntlets. His chest was mapped with thick, graying fur and ancient battle scars. He looked primal, a relic of an era when the pack survived solely on slaughter. Astrid Moonvael stood at the southern edge of the ring. Her right shoulder was still tightly bound in blood-stained linen bandages where Carmilla had torn the silver darts from her f

  • Eclipse of the Blood Moon   Chapter 25 Fighting Side-by-Side

The lower valley had descended into an absolute, mechanized purgatory. The scent of burning pines was entirely drowned out by the suffocating stench of scorched metal, heavy diesel fumes, and the chemical bile of Gorgon’s automated artillery. Across the snow-choked plains near the riverbanks, the two columns of the enemy had converged into a chaotic, three-way slaughter. Astrid, back in her human guise but radiating the massive, boiling aura of her Alpha status, ripped through a squad of Gorgon’s armored infantry. Her tuxedo was long gone, replaced by blood-splattered leather and heavy steel gauntlets. Her obsidian claws were slick with dark rogue blood and black machine oil, her breath turning to thick white steam in the sub-zero air. "Hold the ridge!" Astrid roared, her voice a localized earthquake that cut through the deafening thrum-thrum-thrum of the human sonic mines. Beside her, Torin and the remnants of the Silvertooth vanguard were fighting with a desperate, feral ene

  • Eclipse of the Blood Moon   Chapter 24 The Rogue Alliance Moves

The fragile political stalemates within the coven and the pack were shattered not by internal mutiny, but by a sudden, devastating thunder from the base of the valley. Deep within the iron mines of the neutral zone, the ground convulsed. A massive concussive rumble rolled up the rocky ridges, vibrating straight through the floor of the ruined chapel where Astrid and Carmilla stood. The silver rays of the moon were suddenly eclipsed by thick, towering plumes of oily black smoke that bloated the horizon, smelling of burning rubber, chemical sulfur, and ozone. Lord Gorgon had activated his machine. Before Astrid could even retract her obsidian claws or pull Carmilla out of the chapel’s crumbling archway, the mental link of the Silvertooth pack bond violently exploded with psychic static. It was Torin’s voice, fractured and bleeding into her mind with a raw, agonizing panic. “Alpha! The iron mines—Gorgon’s automated vanguard has just deployed! They aren't just holding the facility; t
