INICIAR SESIÓN
“EDGE! In my office. NOW!” My brother, Alpha Griffin, barked out while storming up the hallway of BluTech, the cybersecurity firm he founded with his two betas, Volt and Blitz.
Rubbing my forehead, I pushed away from my desk with a growl. Something had his panties in a twist, and I had a feeling it was his mate, Sonnet Tyler, the wolf-dragon hybrid who seemed to have turned two wolf packs and a dragon colony upside down.
Sauntering toward his office, I gave his secretary, Audrey, a flirty smile and a wink. She giggled and then cringed when Griffin growled from his office.
“I’m waiting, Edge!”
Damn, he was in a mood. It was so much better when he was getting laid regularly. At least then he wasn’t on my case for every little thing.
Stepping into his office, I cocked my eyebrow. His tie was loosened, his jacket thrown over a chair, and his hands were tunneled through his hair while he read through a report on his desk. He looked up and threw the report across his desk.
“Explain.” I winced. He really was in a pissy mood.
I picked up the paper and almost cringed. I had stopped wondering a long time ago how Griffin always seemed to know when I was in trouble. This was a police report from Hudson Valley. A human city about forty minutes from our northern border. It wasn’t the first police report with my name on it, and it probably wouldn’t be the last.
“You know how it is, Griffin…” I started, but he growled again, so I changed tactics.
“Look, I didn’t know the bitch had a boyfriend. She came onto me; what was I supposed to do? Walk away from an easy lay?”
“Drunk in public, assault, destruction of private property. Over twenty thousand dollars in damages. When in the hell are you going to grow up?” Griffin wasn’t impressed. Then again, Griffin has been riding my ass since I was fifteen.
Our father was seriously injured and his beta killed in a rogue attack, leaving our pack, Blue Stone, reeling. Griffin was nineteen at the time and away at college. He quit school, came home, and took over as pack alpha. Since then, he’s been a thorn in my side. We were four years apart in age, but he tried to act like my father sometimes.
I loved my brother. I was just frustrated that he never took me seriously. I hated that he still saw me as that fifteen-year-old pup devastated by our father’s injury. Sure, Dad survived. But he wasn’t the same. The traumatic brain injury left him childlike and needing constant care.
I drew in a deep breath and tried to keep my temper under control. “Look, she told me she was single. She wanted me to fuck her. I did. Her boyfriend showed up. He thought he could whip my ass; I had to prove him wrong. It wasn’t my fault. I’ll pay the damages, and everything will be fine.”
Griffin slammed his hand onto his desk. “You will remain in the pack for four weeks. I am sick and tired of your bullshit.”
“You’re trying to ground me? I am twenty-seven years old. You cannot order me to stay in the pack!”
“I am your alpha. If you try to cross through any of the pack gates, you will be hauled to the cells and left there until I say. Now, get the hell out of my office.”
I stormed out, and for good measure, I slammed his damn door closed. He was such an asshole! Audrey gave me a suggestive smile. “My break is in twenty minutes. I could help you calm down.”
I knew she had been after Griffin for years. She really didn’t stand a chance with him. First, Griffin had Echo St. Claire in his bed. That was a weird situation with some kind of bond between them that I’m not sure anyone really understood. Now, he has the hybrid in his bed, the lucky bastard. I would have given anything to have Sonni tumble into my bed. She was independent, smart, and sexy as hell.
“Thanks, Audrey, but I’m leaving. If the asshole asks, I’ll be back after lunch.” I enjoyed sex and probably would have taken Audrey up on her offer, except yesterday Ranger, my wolf, scented my mate.
I was in a crowd in Millville, of all places, and before I could find her, the scent vanished. I didn’t expect to find my mate in a human city. I hoped that didn’t mean she was human. I know other wolves have had human mates, but I didn’t want a weak mate.
I hopped into my Escalade and headed toward Millville. I had a feeling my mate was in that city for a convention. There was a home interiors convention that drew a huge crowd to that city each year. I had been about a block from the America’s Center where the event was being held when I scented honey and lavender - my mate.
Walking into the crowd at the America’s Center, I grimaced at the overwhelming smells.
Potpourri, perfume, body odor, fried food, and stale air assaulted me from every direction. I have always been sensitive to smells, but this was overwhelming.
I stretched and then sighed. I felt so warm. I haven’t felt this warm since summer. Cracking my eyes open, I tried to remember what happened. When my brain finally cleared, I sat up and stared at my surroundings. It was still dark out, but I knew I was inside a bedroom. The last thing I remember was the big male grabbing me and shaking me so hard it felt like my brain got scrambled. Then I saw a huge black and gray wolf attack the male and kill him. It wasn’t the first time I witnessed death. I saw my dad and his beta kill plenty of rogues and even a few pack members. What shocked me the most was Edge. His face showed deep concern, and his hands were so gentle. Looking into his eyes, I swear I could actually see his wolf. I couldn’t remember anything after that. A whimpering sound from across the hall caught my attention. Wherever I was, I wasn’t alone. Slipping out of the bed, I moved quietly to the door. A nightlight in the hallway cast a soft glow, and I recognized Edge’s home.
I took Griffin’s advice and went home early. I didn’t expect to see Nova’s bare feet, though. They were just as dainty as she was, and I frowned. It was cold outside; she should be wearing socks or slippers, not walking around barefoot. She apologized twice for taking her shoes and socks off. I was confused about why she thought she needed to apologize. Grabbing my keys, I fled the alpha floor. I had wanted to haul her into my arms and kiss her senseless until she stopped apologizing.I ran into Cameron on my way out. He frowned at me.“Edge, I’m worried about Nova.” That caught my attention.“Why?” I barked out without meaning to.“She was out this morning walking to the packhouse. Poor thing was soaking wet and shivering so hard. I don’t know where she slept, but it couldn’t have been very warm.”Nova was outside the packhouse last night? It was dangerous here in the northern territory. We still had issues with a few rogues sneaking through the border, plus there was a drug ring tha
At the northern gate, Cameron left the SUV running while he ducked into the guard shack. I looked around the area with interest. The gates were just as ornate as the ones in the southern region, but there weren’t any homes or businesses that I saw. Actually, I didn’t see any homes or businesses once we passed that little park. Cameron climbed back behind the wheel and handed me a cherry pastry. “Breakfast of champions.” He quipped as he took a bite of his pastry. I had to chuckle. I think I liked this warrior. He wasn’t pushy or gruff. He seemed to respect my privacy and didn’t make me feel threatened or like an idiot. At the packhouse, I thanked Cameron for the ride and hurried inside. I still had fifteen minutes before I needed to be upstairs. My hair was still pretty wet, one of the downsides of having thicker, longer hair, but at least my clothes were mostly dry. My poor feet were still wet, but once Edge left, I could take my shoes and socks off and dry them. I bumped into La
Landon left to check on a security issue, and Edge took Natalia upstairs, leaving me alone in the dining room. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was supposed to do or where to go. Taking my suitcase, I found a little alcove tucked out of the way. Sitting on one of the chairs, I pulled out my phone and charger. I knew it was almost dead, and there was an outlet in the alcove. As my phone charged, I sat quietly and tried to look like I belonged there while curling into myself so maybe nobody would even notice I was there. When people started filling the packhouse’s lower level while waiting for dinner, I slipped outside with my suitcase. It really was colder up here than it was in the southern territory. I wondered why. It was definitely colder than Missouri.Tugging my gloves on, I carried my suitcase along the sidewalk. I didn’t know the area well, and without my car, I wasn’t exactly sure where I could sleep. The little park wasn’t far, and when I arrived, I glanced around. Surely, ther
Walking into the packhouse with Nova behind me, I saw Natalia sitting on Landon’s lap. They were whispering back and forth while working on a coloring page together. My pup giggled at something Landon said, and I had to smile. I was pretty sure I would do anything for that little girl. When Natalia looked up, she grinned and shouted, “Daddy! We’re making you a picture.”Then, she spied who had walked in with me. “Nova! You’re here.”“I am. My car decided to throw a tantrum, but your dad was nice enough to pick me up so I could be here for you tomorrow.”My pup laughed. “Your car threw a tantrum. That is so silly, Nova!”Nova smiled and gave Natalia a wink. “Sometimes I am a little silly; otherwise I might cry.”Landon had been watching Nova closely. “You didn’t call me Saturday.”My mouth dropped open. Why in the hell would my mate be calling my beta? Nova’s brow furrowed, then she covered her mouth. “Oh, no! Landon, I’m so sorry I forgot. With the car and everything…” She stopped a
“Your nanny’s car is in the shop. She’s a little freaked out about it and very reluctant to use one of my extra cars.” Griffin called me into his office Monday morning. “So what you’re saying is that I need to find someone else to watch Natalia tomorrow.” This day was starting with a bang. “No. I’m informing you that Nova is currently stranded. Maybe you could drive her up to the packhouse tonight and then back down Thursday evening. That would solve a lot of problems for her and you.”“Not really. Where in the hell would she stay since she wouldn’t be able to drive back and forth?”Griffin looked at me with a weird look. “Where did she stay last week?”“What are you talking about? She stayed with Blanche.”“No, I remember Blanche saying she stayed up north because she was worried her car wouldn’t make it.” Griffin watched me closely.“Why didn’t she stay in Erica’s old room?”I bristled at that. There was no way my mate was staying the night in my home. I was losing control of Rang
