English class was supposed to be chill, but nothing felt chill anymore. I was halfway through scribbling notes when Lila leaned over from the desk next to mine.

“Hey, Ezra,” she whispered, smiling shyly. “Can I borrow a pen? Mine just died.”

“Yeah, sure.” I handed her one without thinking.

She took it, fingers brushing mine for a second. “Thanks. You’re a lifesaver.”

Before I could reply, someone behind her stood up too fast. The guy accidentally bumped into Lila’s chair hard. She lost balance and tumbled forward — straight into my lap.

Our faces were suddenly inches apart. Her lips brushed against the corner of my mouth for half a second.

The whole class went dead silent… then exploded.

“Oooooh!”

“Get it, Cole!”

“Finally! Y’all should just date already!”

My eyes widened. I reacted on instinct and gently pushed her back, face burning.

“Shit— sorry,” I mumbled.

Lila quickly straightened up, cheeks bright red. She forced a bright, stylish smile like nothing happened, even though I could see the embarrassment in her eyes.

“It’s okay,” she said, laughing it off. “My bad for being clumsy.”

The teacher told everyone to settle down, but the whispers and teasing kept going. I kept my head down, heart racing for wrong reasons.

After class, I caught up to Lila in the hallway.

“Hey… can I talk to you real quick?”

She turned, still wearing that fake-bright smile. “Sure.”

I rubbed the back of my neck, feeling awkward. “About what happened earlier… I’m really sorry I pushed you like that. It was just a reflex. If you’re free after school, maybe we could grab dinner? My treat. No pressure or anything, just… as an apology.”

Lila blinked, surprised. For a second her smile faltered, then came back softer.

“I… yeah. Okay. I’d like that.”

“Cool. I’ll text you.”

I walked away feeling weird. Not excited. Just… guilty.

Later that afternoon, Kai found me by my locker.

“Yo, Ezra,” he said, leaning against the locker next to mine. “Got a minute?”

We ended up in a quiet corner near the side exit.

Kai looked at me for a long second, then smiled.

“Look, I’m just gonna be real with you. You’re fine as hell. Like…Danm handsome. The way you carry yourself, that face, that body when you skate — it’s unfair, man. I’d love to be close friends with you. Like, really close. If you’re down.”

I let out a nervous laugh. “Kai…”

“No pressure,” he added quickly. “Just putting it out there.”

Before I could respond properly, I felt eyes on us.

I glanced down the hallway.

Mason was standing there, watching. His eyes were red, glassy, like he was barely holding it together. The hurt and jealousy on his face hit me harder than I expected. He turned and stormed off before I could say anything.

After school, I was still standing there, staring in the direction Mason had gone, when Kai came up beside me and casually wrapped an arm around my shoulder.

“Come on, I’ll walk you out,” he said easily.

I didn’t pull away. We walked like that toward the gate.

Mason was already gone.

That night, dinner with Lila was actually nice.

We went to a small diner near school. She laughed at my dumb jokes, told funny stories about cheer practice, and for a while it felt easy and comfortable.

But when she reached across the table and brushed her fingers against mine, I felt… nothing.

No sparks, no butterflies. Just guilt.

At the end of the night, as we stood outside the diner, I took a deep breath.

“Lila… I had a really good time tonight. You’re awesome. But I have to be honest — I don’t feel that way about you. I’m sorry. I hope we can still be friends though.”

Her smile faltered. She tried to play it cool, but I saw the way her eyes got shiny and her voice stammered a little.

“Yeah… of course. Friends. Totally.”

We said goodnight awkwardly and went our separate ways.

When I got home, I dropped onto my bed and checked my phone.

No texts from Mason.

I waited. Refreshed the chats, still nothing.

I fell asleep with the screen still open, hoping his name would pop up but he never texted.

The rink felt different with just me and Kai that morning.

Mason was late again. Kai and I had been running drills for almost forty minutes, laughing more than we probably should have. He was spotting me on a lift, his hands firm on my waist, when he cracked a joke about my form looking “too pretty for a guy who claims he hates attention.”

I laughed, and leaned into him a little for balance as we came down. We were still grinning at each other when the door slammed open.

Mason walked in.

He stopped dead at the entrance, eyes locked on Kai’s hands still resting on my waist. The smile dropped from my face instantly. Kai let go quickly, but it was too late.

Mason’s jaw tightened. His eyes were burning.

“Morning,” Kai said casually, like nothing was weird.

Mason didn’t even look at him. His gaze stayed on me, dark and hurt.

We finished the session in painful silence. Every time Kai said something funny, Mason’s face got harder. Every time he touched my arm to correct my position, Mason looked like he wanted to break something.

When we finally stepped off the ice, Mason’s voice cut through the air.

“Ezra, let me have a word with you in the locker room.”

He didn’t wait for an answer. Just grabbed his bag and stormed off.

I followed him, heart pounding.

The second the locker room door closed behind us, Mason spun around.

“What the fuck was that?” he snapped, voice low but shaking with anger. “Kai had his hands all over you. You were laughing with him like it was nothing. Can’t you see how I’ve been walking on eggshells around you? Trying not to lose my mind every time someone touches you?”

I stared at him, frustration boiling over.

“You’re mad at me?” I shot back. “Lol, what the fuck is wrong with you hun? You think I'm some easy piece of shit that liaten and do whatever you say the? No man, I'm not gonna listen to you say whatever you like to me. You want me? Love me? Then you act like you truly do and stop getting angry at other people for showing interest in me. Of course if your dad get to know about this, hell will let loose. I’m torn, Mason. I’m confused as hell. Part of me keeps thinking about what you said… but Lila’s been nice to me too. I don’t know what I’m doing anymore.”

Mason’s eyes flashed. He stepped forward, backing me against the lockers with one smooth move. His hand came up beside my head, caging me in.

Before I could say another word, he kissed me hard, slow and desperate like all the jealousy and fear and want he’d been holding back finally exploded. His body pressed against mine, one hand gripping my waist, the other sliding into my hair. I kissed him back without thinking, fingers fisting in his hoodie.

For a few seconds, nothing else existed. Then —

“Wow.”

We jerked apart like we’d been electrocuted.

Kai stood in the doorway, eyes wide, a stunned smile slowly spreading across his face.

“I never expected to see this,” he said, voice calm but clearly surprised. “Sorry… enjoy, man.”

He turned and walked out without another word, the door clicking shut behind him.

The locker room fell dead silent.

Mason stepped back, breathing hard, eyes full of panic.

“Fuck,” he whispered. “He saw us. I mean, he actually saw us.”

I slid down against the lockers until I was sitting on the floor, head in my hands.

We weren’t ready for this or even sure what “this” was yet and now someone had seen everything.

Mason crouched down in front of me, looking just as scared as I felt.

“Ezra…” he started, voice shaky. “What do we do now?”

I didn’t have an answer, cause I'm scared as fuck.

All I knew was that our secret wasn’t a secret anymore, and I had no idea how badly this was going to blow up.

  • Edges Of Us   Almost Caught

The party noise faded behind us as Mason pulled me further down the wooden path that led toward the lake.Neither of us spoke until we reached a small clearing where the trees blocked most of the light from the house. Only the moon and a few string lights hanging from branches lit the space.Mason stopped and turned to face me. His breathing was still uneven from the almost-kiss.“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I shouldn’t have done that back there. Not like that, when everything is still so messed up.”I leaned against a tree, arms crossed, trying to steady my heart.“You keep saying things like that,” I replied. “Big words. Then you pull away. Then you come back. I’m getting whiplash, Mason.”He ran a hand through his hair, looking frustrated with himself.“I know. I’m trying to figure this out too. Every time I see Kai looking at you, or Lila bringing you stuff… it fucks with my head. But it’s not just jealousy. It’s more than that.”He took a step closer.“I dare you to let me be y

  • Edges Of Us   One And Only

The announcement came during the last period.Tyler Brooks, one of the loudest guys in class, stood up at the front like he owned the room.“Yo, listen up!” he shouted, grinning. “It’s my birthday this Friday. I’m throwing a party at my parents’ lake house. Starts at 8 PM. Everyone’s invited. The hockey team, skaters, cheer squad, whoever. Bring whoever you want, just don’t be boring. There’ll be music, food, and no adults. Be there or be lame.”The class erupted in cheers and whistles. Someone yelled “Free drinks?” and Tyler laughed.I wasn’t really planning to go. My head was still messy from everything — Mom’s recovery, Mason’s confession in the practice room, the way his words kept replaying in my mind like a song I couldn’t turn off.But when the final bell rang, Mason appeared beside my locker.“You going?” he asked, voice low.I shrugged. “Wasn’t planning on it.”He leaned against the locker next to mine, arms crossed. “Come. Even if it’s just for a bit. I… I want to talk to yo

  • Edges Of Us   Back To School

The first day back at school felt so strange. I walked through the front gates with my bag slung over one shoulder, heart beating a little faster than usual. Mom was finally home resting. Dad had taken the day off to stay with her. I told them I’d be fine coming back alone. But the truth was, I was nervous. Not because of school, but because of him.I had barely made it halfway across the courtyard when I heard someone shout my name.“Ezra!”Kai came running from the direction of the parking lot, a big smile on his face. Before I could even say anything, he pulled me into a tight hug, arms wrapping around me warmly.“Man, I missed you!” he said, squeezing me. “We were all worried. How’s your mom? You okay?”I patted his back awkwardly. “She’s better now. Thanks for asking.”Kai didn’t let go right away. His hug was sincere, warm, a little too long. Over his shoulder, I saw Mason standing near the entrance to the hockey locker room.Mason’s eyes were burning. He was staring straight at

  • Edges Of Us   Back To School

For the next three days, I didn’t go to school.Dad had to return to work, so I stayed at the hospital with Mom. I slept on the uncomfortable couch beside her bed, ate terrible cafeteria food, and tried not to think too much. The doctors said the surgery went well, but she was still weak. Tubes, monitors, pale skin — it all made my chest feel tight every time I looked at her.My phone stayed on silent most of the time.Mason had been texting every day.Mason: *You good?*Mason: *Training feels weird without you yelling at me.*Mason: *Kai keeps asking where you are. Told him to mind his business.*Mason: *Lila asked about you too. Said she hopes you’re okay.*I read every message but never replied. I didn’t know what to say.On the fourth night, Mom was finally sleeping peacefully. I needed air and some snacks, so I slipped out to the supermarket across the street from the hospital.I was standing in the aisle staring at protein bars when I heard a familiar voice behind me.“Ezra?”I

  • Edges Of Us   Kai And Mason

The next morning, Kai showed up again like he already belonged there. He walked in with that same confident grin, skates over his shoulder, looking way too awake for 5 AM.“Morning, guys,” he said, eyes landing on me first. “Ready to sweat?”Mason didn’t even bother replying. He just laced up faster, jaw locked tight. We started training, but the energy was different. Worse.Kai was good — really good. Clean lines, strong core, and he wasn’t shy about showing it. Every time I demonstrated something, he watched me like I was the only person in the rink. His compliments came easy.“Damn, Ezra,” he said after I landed a clean axel. “You make that look effortless. The way your body moves… It's insane. You’re easily the best-looking skater I’ve seen here. No offense, Mason.”Mason’s head snapped toward him so fast I thought he’d pull a muscle.Kai just laughed lightly. “What? It’s true. Ezra’s got that whole pretty-boy thing going on. Face, body, the grace… it’s a package. Mason’s strong a
