Chapter 7

Author: Snow Cloud
Vanessa raised her face, and tears finally rolled down in silence.

At that moment, she wanted only one thing: for Adrian to still be alive.

She wanted the chance to say that she was sorry.

Elsewhere, at the Whitmore estate outside Ridgewater, I woke in a soft bed with my vision still blurred.

The first thing I saw was a woman with a startlingly fine face, watching me quietly.

"You're awake."

My head was splitting, as if someone had taken a hammer to both temples.

I barely managed to push

I never imagined I'd see Vanessa again in this life.Six months had passed, and she looked almost unrecognizable. The expensive, immaculate clothing she once wore had been replaced by an old T-shirt.Her hair, once smooth and shining, hung dull and dry around her shoulders.I instinctively turned away, but she had already rushed toward me.She seized my sleeve with both hands, her voice breaking."It's me. Vanessa. Adrian, you're alive. Thank God you're alive."She spoke incoherently as hot tears fell across the back of my hand."I know I was wrong. I believed Damian's lies and destroyed you. Every day since losing you has been a nightmare."I have nothing left. Can we begin again? Let me stay beside you and spend the rest of my life making this right."Every word was raw and desperately sincere. But nothing in me moved at all.I peeled her hands off my arm and answered without any heat at all."I'm sorry, but there is nothing between us anymore. The Adrian Pierce who love

Vanessa raised her face, and tears finally rolled down in silence. At that moment, she wanted only one thing: for Adrian to still be alive. She wanted the chance to say that she was sorry.Elsewhere, at the Whitmore estate outside Ridgewater, I woke in a soft bed with my vision still blurred. The first thing I saw was a woman with a startlingly fine face, watching me quietly."You're awake."My head was splitting, as if someone had taken a hammer to both temples.I barely managed to push myself upright.Every movement dragged against the bruises all over me."Who are you?""Camille Whitmore. My family owns Whitmore Holdings. I happened to be near Hawkridge Gorge that day because I wanted to try some of the outdoor attractions."Fear crossed her expression as she continued."Then I saw you fall. I didn't have time to think. I went into the reservoir and pulled you out."My breath caught. The memory of falling returned without warning. So did the cold water filling my lung

When Vanessa woke again, the first thing she asked was, "Did you find the men who cut the line?""We found them."Grant answered respectfully and offered a glass of water.Vanessa refused it and pushed herself upright against the hospital bed."We also obtained the video. The two men are being held nearby. Do you want to see them?""Bring them in."The two men were forced into the room, their knees striking the floor with a dull sound. They shook and begged without stopping, their voices raw with panic."We're sorry, Ms. Langley. We were following orders. The man promised each of us half a million dollars each if we cut the rope. We were buried in debt and had nowhere else to turn. Please let us go."Vanessa stood. She stopped in front of them and looked down.Without warning, she drove her heel onto one man's fingers. He screamed. The sound tore through the suffocating hospital room."Who hired you?"Her voice could have cut glass. The men turned white with pain and st

Vanessa grabbed Grant by the collar and demanded an answer."What do you mean the line was cut and he disappeared?"And what happened to my assets? They were administered by one of the most sophisticated trust firms in Crestland. No one knew my access credentials. How could every covered account be empty?"Grant handed her a copy of the agreement with shaking hands."Ms. Langley, you need to read this."The moment Vanessa saw the marital agreement, she froze. She had almost forgotten that she had ever signed it.Yet every line on the page documented how completely she had once loved Adrian Pierce. When they first became involved, everyone around them opposed the relationship.Adrian had tried to end things because of the enormous difference in wealth and social status, but Vanessa pursued him without restraint until he finally agreed to remain with her.To prove there was no limit to what she'd give him, she had personally executed the trust instruments and escrow documents t

After leaving the hospital, I called Dana Kessler, my attorney."When does the transfer agreement take effect?""Tomorrow at nine in the morning. The escrow agent will release the trust assets into the accounts you designated."After ending the call, I booked a flight out of Crestland. My phone vibrated with a message from Vanessa.[Adrian, please stop being angry. I'll spend whatever it takes and use every connection I have to settle the hospital issue.][You'll remain the attending surgeon, and no one will be able to remove you, as long as you don't hurt Damian.]I didn't answer. I deleted every way she had of reaching me.Early the next morning, I left for the airport with my suitcase.Vanessa appeared without warning and clamped a hand around my wrist."Was this your doing?"Before I could answer, two of her security men forced me into the back seat of a vehicle. They drove me to Hawkridge Gorge Adventure Park and dragged me from the car like a dead body."You released

The next day, I was packing when Dr. Marcus Feldman, our department chair, called.By the time I reached the hospital, a crowd had gathered outside the administrative office.Objects came flying at me before I understood what was happening, and someone raised a bottle of acid and threw it.I twisted aside, but droplets struck the back of my hand and burned immediately."Butcher! My child took the medicine you prescribed and ended up in intensive care. Give me my child back."The father's screaming filled the corridor. My mind went blank.I had always been meticulous in my work and had never made a medication error. How could a child have received the wrong drug and deteriorated badly enough to require intensive care?Ignoring the chaos and the pain in my hand, I demanded the security footage. The recording showed Damian secretly removing the medication I had prescribed and replacing it with another bottle.Cold went through me, and I headed straight for his room.Vanessa wa
