Elowen’s POV

Kade looked at me while I still sat on the floor, breathing hard.

“How did it feel?” he asked.

I swallowed. My body still tingled from Freya’s mouth and fingers.

“It felt really good,” I answered. The words came out quieter than I wanted. I hated how true they were.

I noticed Freya looking at me. There was this heavy lust in her eyes. She was still naked, her lips slightly swollen, her chest rising and falling. The way she stared made my skin feel hot all over again.

Elowen’s povBy the following morning, I discovered that the camp had found something new to discuss.Unfortunately, I was the subject.I was walking through the courtyard when two women standing near the well fell silent as I approached. One of them looked away quickly, but the other continued staring at me.I slowed my steps.“Is there something on my face?”The woman lifted her chin.“Nothing that I can see.”“Then perhaps you should stop staring.”Her companion grabbed her arm, clearly hoping to prevent an argument, but the woman pulled free.“Some people should be careful about the company they keep.”I stared at her.“What does that mean?”She gave me a thin smile.“Surely you know.”“No, I don’t. Why don’t you explain it?”Her eyes narrowed.“Everyone has noticed how quickly the Southern prisoner has risen in the King’s favor. First, he gets comfortable quarters, then he is given the authority to train our warriors. Now the King listens to his every word.”I folded my arms.“An

Elowen’s POVMira had been unusually quiet all afternoon. At first, I thought she was simply tired. The kitchens had been busy since morning and with Kade now training the Northern warriors, everyone seemed to have something to say about the Southern prince. Some praised his fighting skills. Others complained that the King was making a terrible mistake by giving a prisoner so much freedom. One woman had even claimed that I must have bewitched Kade using black magic just because she was jealous of how Kade rose in the king’s favor.I had ignored them all. After spending most of the afternoon listening to Kade complain about Northern customs, I had no desire to entertain anyone else’s opinions but Mira’s silence was different. She had barely spoken while preparing supper, and when I asked her a question, she answered without looking at me. Even her usual cheerful humming was missing.I watched her arrange a row of bowls on the counter before finally deciding I had had enough.“What’s wr

Kade’s POVThe three warriors charged at me like they had something to prove.I almost felt sorry for them. The largest one came straight at me, swinging his fist toward my face. I stepped aside, caught his arm and used his own momentum to send him stumbling past me. Before he could regain his balance, I struck the back of his knee and he hit the ground with a grunt. The second warrior attacked from my left.I ducked beneath his punch, drove my shoulder into his chest and pushed him backward. He recovered faster than I expected, swinging again before I could move away completely. His fist grazed my jaw.A few warriors watching from outside the training ring shouted in excitement.I touched my jaw and looked at him.“That was almost impressive.”His expression twisted.“Stop talking and fight!”He roared and charged at me again. This time, I didn’t wait for him to reach me. I stepped forward, caught his wrist, twisted his arm behind his back and swept his legs from under him, he landed

Elowen’s POVKade barely spoke to me when I returned that evening. He was sitting in the sitting room with a cup of wine in his hand, staring at nothing in particular. The moment I entered, his eyes lifted to my face but he didn’t say anything about what had happened earlier and neither did I.I wasn’t ready to have that conversation again. I had spent most of the afternoon trying to convince myself that I needed to stop expecting things from him, and I wasn’t about to ruin that effort by asking him to explain his feelings a second time.Besides, Kade had made his position clear. His men came first. His freedom came first. And whatever I felt for him was my problem to deal with.I walked past him and placed my belongings on the table.“Where have you been?” he asked.I glanced at him.“Out.”I answered and went toward the kitchen.“Elowen.”I stopped reluctantly.“What?”He put down his cup.“I have something to tell you.”I almost laughed. Apparently, we were both full of important t

Elowen’s povKade opened his mouth, then closed it again. For once he had nothing to say.I turned toward the door, desperate to get away before I embarrassed myself any further.“Elowen, wait.”I stopped, but I didn’t turn around.“What?”His footsteps approached, then halted a short distance behind me.I waited for him to say something that might take away some of the pain. An apology. An explanation. Instead, he said, “I have to think about my men.”I closed my eyes.“Okay.”I opened the door just as another voice interrupted us.“What is going on here?”Thorne stood in the doorway, his gaze moving between Kade and me.His expression immediately changed when he noticed my tear-streaked face.“Elowen? Why are you crying?”I quickly wiped my cheeks.“I’m fine.”His eyes narrowed.“Did he do something to you?”“Thorne, please. Not now.”I moved past him before he could ask another question. I didn’t want to explain what had happened because I didn’t want him confronting Kade or making

Kade’s povImmediately I left there, I went straight to the king.I didn’t bother asking for an audience. I didn’t wait for a servant to announce me and I certainly didn’t care whether the king was in the middle of an important meeting.I pushed open the doors to the throne room and walked inside. He sat on his throne, speaking with two advisers. Both men fell silent when they saw my expression. The king dismissed them with a gesture. Then he looked at me.“Kade. What can I do for you?”“Your prisoners.”His eyebrows rose.“My prisoners?”“My men. The four warriors captured alongside me.”He leaned back.“What about them?”I stared at him, struggling to understand how he could sound so unconcerned.“They are being beaten and starved.”His expression barely changed.“They are prisoners of war.”“Do you think that excuses what is happening to them?”“I think you should remember that they are enemies of this kingdom.”“You made a bargain with me!”My voice rang through the throne room.T
