Kelanar sits in a small cell, playing the last few hours over and over in her mind. The blood still stains her hands. She doesn’t know what happened, she just got angry and then Gage was lying there, covered in blood. Sheriff James told her that if Gage dies, then she will be charged with murder. She prays he survives.
Sheriff James comes in and sits on a chair by her cell.
“I have some news, Kelanar. He will live, thanks to the doctor,” Sheriff James says.
“That is good to hear. I am glad he will make it,” says a very relieved Kelanar.
“Tell me, girl, what was going through your mind when you hit him with a rock?”
She stands up and paces the floor.
“I don’t know. He was bad-mouthing Hector, and I was angry. I remember picking up the rock, and then there is nothing but blackness. When I came back to myself, he was on the ground bleeding. I didn’t know what happened until I saw the bloody rock in my hand.”
“So, you blacked out, acted in rage, and you didn’t realize what you had done. Am I getting that right?”
“Yes, I don’t know why it happened or how.”
“Well, most people will not believe that story. My advice is to admit to your crime. The judge might take it easier on you if you do and his father might not call for your head,” he says matter-of-factly.
“My head! He is alive,” she shouts. Her palms are sweaty and she feels a lump forming in her throat.
“His father is on the council, and he wants you to be charged with attempted murder.”
“What attempted murder? I didn’t try to kill him,” she yells. Dread fills her as she tries to stay calm and takes a deep breath.
“Try or not, this is what you’re facing unless the judge sees it differently.”
“Oh wow, does my mother know, and when do I see the judge?”
“Your mother has been informed and you will see the judge tomorrow morning.”
Sheriff James gets up and puts the chair back.
“I would try to get some sleep and pray if I were you. You’re going to need it.”
He goes to his office, leaving her alone in her cell.
Kelanar lies on her cot and tries to sleep, thinking about what is going to happen to her.
The next morning, Sheriff James wakes her up. He handcuffs her and takes her to the town hall to see the judge.
There is a crowd, and many people are there to boo her and throw things at her. She sees Gage’s parents and knows this could be terrible.
“Folks, please get out of the way. The courtroom is closed to the public. You will hear about the outcome after it is over. Move aside,” calls Sheriff James.
“Murderer!" they scream at Kelanar.
James gets her inside, takes her to room two and sits her down in a chair. He sits with her to wait for the judge.
After two hours, the judge comes in and he is with Gage’s father, who takes a seat in the audience.
“Good morning, Judge. The case is against Kelanar Blade for assault and attempted murder on Gage Potter, whose father is present for him since he is still in recovery,” says Sheriff James.
“Thank you, Sheriff. I will hear the case from the witness first and then the accused. Call in the first witness,”
Steven brings in one of Gage’s friends that was present at the incident.
“State your name and your connection to the victim and the accused,” says Steven.
He clears his throat and moves his blond hair out of his face before he speaks.
“I am John, and Gage is my best friend.” he says
“How do you know the accused?” asks Steven.
“She is the girlfriend of my old friend Hector,” says John.
“Tell us. in your own words, what happened yesterday?” says Steven.
“Gage, me and a few other guys were hanging out by the fountain. Gage saw Kelanar and he blocked her path on purpose so he could talk to her. Gage made some unfriendly remarks about her late boyfriend. Kelanar got upset and we saw her bend down to pick something up. We weren’t sure what it was. You could see the anger on her face. Then she charged at Gage and bashed his head in with the rock. Once he hit the ground, she just stood there. It was like she woke up from a sleep and she looked shocked at what she had done.”
“After she woke up, as you put it, did she seem sorry it happened?”
“Yes, Sir, she did. She was very upset about it,” says John.
The judge listened to each witness. They all have the same story: she hit him but felt sorry after the fact. He soon calls for Kelanar to tell her side of the story.
Kelanar's legs shake with fear as she takes the stand.
“Tell us in your own words what happened,” says Steven.
“It's just like the others have said. Gage was not being nice to me and I got angry. I don’t remember picking up the rock or even using it. I was so mad at Gage and when it happened, I blacked out. I don’t remember doing it. Gage was on the ground as I woke up with a bloody rock in my hand," she says with fear in her voice.
“Are you sorry this happened?”
“Yes, I am very sorry and I know it is not an excuse, but I haven’t been myself lately with losing Hector and I just was so angry,” she says with tears falling down her face.
The Judge listens and then addresses the room.
“I have heard enough, and I will give my ruling in an hour. We will take a small recess until then,” orders the Judge.
Sheriff James takes her to a small cell at the town hall to wait.
“How bad do you think this will go?” Kelanar asks him.
Sheriff James sits in a chair.
“I don’t know, Kelanar, the Judge could be lenient or harsh. If harsh, you're looking at prison time. If he is lenient, you could be assigned to a task or become a slave or something else.”
“That is the part that scares me.”
“We will know soon, and you will have to face whatever is decided.”
After an hour the Judge calls everyone back to the courtroom and tells Kelanar to rise.
“As a father, I understand the need for justice and losing a loved one. Kelanar, you've been through a lot, and I can see that you’re truly sorry for your actions. I fear it could happen again as well, for you don’t remember doing it. That being said, we need to make sure it doesn’t happen again, and you need to be around people who can stop this from happening again. So my sentence is for you to spend a year at the guard tower working there. You will only be allowed to return home two days a week. If for some reason, you decide to attack someone else, they will stop it. This is my ruling, and you will be taken to the guard tower tomorrow. You are released to your family for the night and will report to the sheriff in the morning. Do you understand?” asks The Judge .
Kelanar was near tears, still trying to understand it all.
“Yes, Your Honor, I understand and thank you for being understanding.”
Gage’s father is outraged.
“That is all? To be sent to the guard watch for nearly killing my son? Is this some kind of joke?” Mr. Potter demands.
“No, my friend it isn’t, but from all his friends' testimony he started it and set her off with everything she has been through. So he is as much to blame as she is. As such, this is the fairest treatment I can give, while still giving your son some justice. Court is dismissed.”
Kelanar is uncuffed and released to go home to pack for her time away.
Hector walks into the game room and perceives that they have many games. From pool, darts, corn hole, archery, to knife throwing. Hector notices a few vampires and demons hanging out, playing games as they walk in. They spy Trevor by the pool table, playing with two demons. “Look who finally passed the first part of the training.” Trevor sneers at them. “Took you long enough as well. You just passed one day before us. Besides, Hector passed on his first night,” Ruby sasses him. “Shut it Ruby, no one needs your smart mouth,” says Trevor. “It's not necessary to be mean to her. She speaks the truth. You just passed,” says Hector. Trevor sets his pool stick down on the table. “Look here Hector, she's been a smart mouth off since she got here. I wouldn’t defend her. Besides, isn’t she the reason you’re here now?” says Trevor, getting closer to Hector. “She is part of the reason, but from what I understand, she was doing as she was told,” says Hector. “Think again. She volunteered for
Kelanar sits on her bed. It's soft and warm. She just wants to curl up and cry herself to sleep. She knows she can’t, as she needs to pack to leave in the morning as well as talk to her mother and sister. They will want some answers. Answers she herself didn’t know. She doesn’t know why she attacked Gage. What made her pick up that rock and smash it into his skull? She hears her mother come in. “What did the judge say? It must not be too bad if you’re home, my dear. Tell me what happened?” begs Sarah. Kelanar turns to Sarah, trying to not cry. “He realized that I was sorry and not sure what happened, but thinks it could happen again. I am sentenced to the Guard Tower for a year and only allowed to come home on the weekends.” Sarah sits on the bed beside her daughter and holds her. “Oh, my daughter, a year is a long time. At least it wasn’t jail or banishment. My heart couldn’t take that. We will see you on the weekends. This could be part of a bigger plan. We have to trust the go
Hector gets up and searches the bathroom. A few bottles of cleaning supplies, towels and soaps are what he finds when he opens the cabinets. He gets into the shower and washes his body. It leaves him feeling refreshed after his last encounter with the maze. His mind drifts to Kelanar and what she could be doing. Hector is so lost in thought that he doesn’t hear the knocking on the door until Ruby is standing by the shower yelling at him. “Hector, hurry. I need a shower and we are going to be late!” yells Ruby. “I am coming,” Hector calls out. He is breathing hard after being scared. Quickly shutting off the water, he dries off and goes into the room with a towel wrapped around his waist. “About time, Hector,” shouts Ruby. Ruby goes into the bathroom, and he hears the shower turn on. Hector gets dressed. He wears the vampire uniform. By the time he is dressed, Ruby is out and dresses herself. He looks away to give her privacy. “Tell me, what you were so distracted about that yo
Skorn watches Rex leave his study. His newest project seems to be doing very well. Hector has surpassed all his other vampires at this stage of the training. Skorn expects he will continue to see this at each level of the tests. Skorn gets up from his desk and he feels a sharp pain in his chest. He calls out as he falls. Jack, his most trusted friend, comes in. “Sire, are you unwell?” asks Jack. “I don’t know. I feel a sharp pain in my chest. Something is wrong. I need you to figure it out, Jack,” orders Skorn. “Yes, My Lord. Let’s get you to your bed where I can do a full scan to see what’s going on with you.” Jack helps Skorn to his feet, to his bedchamber and into bed. Jack, using his magic, scans Skorn’s body to locate what is causing his king’s illness. He scans Skorn from top to bottom, and finds nothing plaguing his body or mind. He is quite puzzled about it all. “Sire, I can’t seem to find anything that is causing you this pain. I don’t understand it. You spoke of a cu
Kelanar watches as Sheriff James leaves. She feels alone when she realizes that this is really happening. She stands there with her bag, ready to embrace her fresh path. Her chest feels heavy with dread. Try to put on a friendly and brave face. She is on her own. Master John looks Kelanar over and thinks about what to do with a woman at an all-men camp. “Come, I will show you to your room and then we will go over what you are going to be doing in your time here,” says Master John. Kelanar follows him back through the door and up a flight of stairs to the second floor, then down the left hall to where there are three doors. “The first door is to my room, if you need anything. The second will be your room. When you’re not doing your chores and helping the cook, it is best if you are here. The boys can, well, be boys.” “I understand. What are my duties while I am here?” asks Kelanar. “Help with all the meals and clean up as well clean the castle and any other room I or the cook t
Hector explores the library where he finds many books about witches, werewolves and sirens. He is curious and grabs a few books to read. He tracks Mrs.Blake down in her office. “Are we allowed to check out books?” asks Hector. She smiles and sees a stack of books in his hands. “I know you’re in training, so as long as you do what you’re supposed to, I don’t see the harm and will let you check them out.” “Thanks, I just want something to help pass the time.” “I know the feeling. You look so familiar. What's the last name?” “Hector Ale.” “Do you know much about your family?” she asks with a curious look. “Not much to tell. Father is dead, Mother is a barmaid in Sung and I don’t have any other family. Why do you ask?” “Well, you just seem like someone I used to know. Maybe I am mistaken . Your books, do take care of them. Hector, be careful. This is a dangerous world.” He leaves with his books thinking, she was acting very weird. He heads back to his and Ruby’s room. He sits
The next morning, Kelanar rises early and takes a quick shower before heading down to start on breakfast. Kelanar gets to the bottom of the stairs when she hears arguing. She peaks around the corner and spies two boys. One is Henry, and the other is an unknown boy. It looks like they are fighting. “Henry, what is your problem?” “My problem is you, Conner.” “You and your team have been nothing but a thorn in my side. If I ever catch you around my dorm again messing with my squad, I will put you flat on your back.” “Like you can, Henry. We both know the twins aren’t cut out for this life. You will have no one on your side soon enough. Then my team and I will take the lead and you will be left behind and alone.” Henry goes to attack when he notices Kelanar standing on the steps and thinks better of it. “Get out of here Conner, before I show you who you’re messing with.” “Whatever Henry, I'll see you on the training field. We can settle it there.” Conner walks off towards the mes
At dawn, Hector is woken up by a loud bang on the cell door. “Wake up, Hector. We have work to do,” shouts Rex . Hector’s back is on fire, and he hurts all over. His mouth is dry, and he feels like crap. He pulls himself up to a sitting position and rubs his eyes. “Ok, I am up. Do I have time for a shower?” asks Hector. “Yes, that's why I am getting you up now. Your teammates should be getting up soon. If you want that shower, you better hurry.” Hector walks out of the cell and heads upstairs to his room. When he gets to his room, he sees Ruby getting dressed. “Well, he returns. You look like shit. What happened to you and where were you?” asks Ruby. “I don’t have time to talk about it. I need a shower before training,” growls Hector. “ Someone is in a bad mood. Whatever, suit yourself. Shower is free.” Hector doesn’t waste time. He quickly goes into the bathroom and begins to strip off his pants and underwear. He never put his shirt back on last night. He turns on the wate
