Chapter 3

Author: Paper Relic
Lucien's POV

Little did I know, as soon as I boarded the jet, I'd run into Jaden Ellington, the male flag bearer who had pushed me down the stairs.

Eira was nestled in his arms as if it were the most natural thing in the world as she announced nonchalantly, "I'm pregnant, and based on the timeline, it's Jaden's. I only agreed to this vacation as a reward for him. He's a picky eater, and he doesn't know how to take good care of himself. Since you're good at cooking and domestic chores, you'll just have to work a little harder on this trip."

Without uttering a single word, I looked at her as if I was looking at a stranger.

When we were young, she would always come home covered in a patchwork of new and old injuries.

Back then, I was blind and unable to help her shoulder the burdens of life. All I could do was silently bandage her wounds and massage out her bruises before groping around in the darkness to cook her a plate of spaghetti with hands covered in countless burns and blisters. Over time, I had become skilled at it.

How ironic. The skills I had learned out of love had now become the means she used to please her lover.

Eira grabbed me by the arm as I turned to leave. "I'm sure you know how badly I've wanted a child. Yet, after all these years, you couldn't give me one. Since you lack the ability, and someone else has done it for you, shouldn't you repay him?"

I looked at her in utter disbelief. My nose prickled, and my voice became hoarse. "Eira, if you had bothered to ask the doctor, you would've known why we couldn't have a child."

Eira was taken aback, but before she could say anything, Jaden, who was standing beside her, dramatically covered his mouth. "Lucien, you're not going to say it's Eira's fault, are you? Eira's always so eager to please in bed, and the doctor has confirmed she's in good health. It's hardly reasonable for you to saddle her with the blame, don't you think?"

His eyes gleamed with triumph and provocation. It was the same look he had two months ago when he pushed me down the stairs.

At the time, he had stood in the pool of blood beneath me and mocked me. Eira had actually been pregnant with my child, but he paid off the doctor to secretly terminate it.

Recalling how the child we had finally been blessed with had been stolen from me just like that, rage roared through me. I raised my hand high and slammed my fist into his face.

Instead of stopping me, Eira gently ran her fingers over Jaden's swollen left cheek. "I told you, anyone who makes a scene in front of my husband is at his mercy."

Noticing the blood drain from his face, she let out a low chuckle. "Still, you're my child's future godfather. He ought to show you the respect and dignity befitting my husband. How about this? He'll make it up to you with that obsidian necklace around his neck. What do you think?"

I looked up in disbelief, no longer able to suppress the anger surging within me. "Eira Primrose! Do you have any idea that he's the one who pushed—"

However, before I could finish speaking, her bodyguard stepped forward on Eira's orders and yanked the necklace from around my neck. The burning pain from the friction felt like a slap across my face, rendering me speechless. I could only watch as Eira fastened the necklace—named Star—around Jaden's neck.

Drinking in this scene, I lost all desire to argue. What was the point? This woman was no longer the Eira who would risk her life to win a prize for me.

Yet, even when I closed my eyes, scenes from the past still replayed in my head against my will.

Eira had stood on her tiptoes in front of the burning race car to clasp the necklace around my neck. Her eyes had been shimmering as she looked at me. "Luc, as long as it's something you want, even if it's a star in the sky, I'll try to pluck it down for you!"

Unfortunately, that star now hung high in someone else's sky.

The jet landed smoothly on the tarmac.

The moment I sent my location, a reply came almost immediately from the other end. "Luci, did you come over ahead of schedule?"

I typed back a response.

After wrapping up the conversation, a voice suddenly came from above me. "Luc, who are you chatting with?"

Eira looked down at me with an unreadable gaze.

Lucien's POVAt the time, I shook my head and beamed at Calliope. "I can't. My star's right here."Sadly, in a mere decade, everything had changed beyond recognition. Still, I looked up at her and earnestly said, "Thank you for being willing to help me." Had she not arrived in the nick of time that day after my car plunged into the ocean to pull me out of the sinking vehicle, I would most likely have become nothing more than bones at the bottom of the ocean. Calliope looked away as if it was no big deal, though her ears were burning bright red. "Don't sweat it. You kind of saved my life back then, too... Besides, we're partners now. Of course I should help you!"I couldn't help but chuckle and nod. The moment I decided to leave Eira, I had reached out to Calliope. I proposed becoming her business partner, offering my expertise in sports nutrition and biomechanical care tailored specifically for race car drivers. Looking back on it now, I felt a little sentimental. I guess I

Third-Person POVEira's touch was as gentle as a lover's caress, yet it made every hair on his body stand on end. "I know I fucked up. Please—"However, the force around his neck only tightened further. The unwillingness to accept his impending death fueled a self-destructive courage within him. He figured he had nothing left to lose and cackled. "As if you're any better than me! You're the one who gave me the opportunity to teach Lucien a lesson, remember? Why are you pretending to be a devoted wife now?"Now that he doesn't want you anymore, you got what you deserved! Besides, when I pushed your pitiful husband down the stairs that day, do you have any idea how much he bled? It practically soaked through his white shirt! "Where were you then? You didn't even hear his cries for help. I merely beckoned, and you crawled into my bed like a dog!" Eira's chest abruptly tightened. Recalling that day, when she had received the call informing him that Lucien had been hospitalized, sh

Lucien's POVEira stared long and hard at our intertwined hands. "So the reason you suddenly wanted a divorce was because of this bitch? You told me you loathed me for cheating on you, yet if you weren't infertile, I wouldn't have gone looking for other men! Look at what you're doing now. How are you any different from me back then?"Eyeing me mockingly, she reprimanded me matter-of-factly, as if my inability to give her a child was a perfectly valid justification for her unbridled affairs. Yet, she had never once stopped to ask me why we couldn't have children. Eira had simply used it as a convenient excuse to indulge in the thrill and excitement of the chase. Before I could retort, Calliope, who was beside me, had already lunged at her. "How dare you speak to him like that! If it weren't for you, Luci would never have suffered those injuries in the first place! Instead of reflecting on the cause, you brazenly brought your lover into your home and even indulged him when he pushed L

Lucien's POVThe moment Eira saw me, she could hardly believe her eyes. When I turned to leave, she strode up to me. "I knew you were still alive, Luc!" Her expression was filled with uncontrollable excitement. "You must've gone through so much while you were wandering out here all this time. Come on, I'll take you home."However, I avoided her outstretched hand and took a step back. "Please keep your hands to yourself, Ms. Primrose. We're divorced."Eira froze. "Excuse me?" My brows drew together, but I knew that since she had tracked me down, there was no way for me to avoid her any longer. So, I pulled up the social media post I had made to celebrate my new life on the day I received the divorce certificate. "See? We were no longer husband and wife as of two months ago."Eira stared blankly at the photo, muttering under her breath, "N-No, that's impossible! I've never signed—"Mid-sentence, realization struck her. She stared at me in utter disbelief. "Two months ago... What

Third-Person POVEira's question made Jaden flinch. He forced a smile. "Why would you think that?"Paying him no mind, Eira coldly ordered, "Pull up all the surveillance footage from that road on that day."The blood drained from his face in an instant. He thought he had enough time to cover his tracks. It never crossed his mind that Eira hadn't trusted him for a single second. In no time, Rowena returned with a laptop. When Eira watched the fiery-red car crash through the guardrail, her face darkened as if a storm was brewing. Even though she couldn't make out who was inside the vehicle because the footage was taken from afar, an uneasy feeling spread through her chest. Rowena leaned in to take a closer look. "Huh, isn't that Mr. Sinclair?" As soon as her words fell, she watched the car plunge straight into the ocean. In a heartbeat, her face twisted in sheer terror. "Mr. Sinclair… Why is he there?"Rowena whipped her head around to look at Jaden. "When I arrived at the

Third-Person POVBy the time Eira came to, the excruciating pain racking her body tore a sharp gasp from her throat. Clutching her forehead, she felt disoriented until a hand reached out from beside her and grabbed hold of her. Her gaze shifted toward Jaden, who was equally disheveled beside her, and her brows knitted together. "Who are you?"He froze for a moment before an overwhelming sense of joy washed over him.Eira appeared to have lost her memory, and Lucien was now missing. Wasn't this a golden opportunity for him to become Eira's husband?Suppressing his tumultuous emotions, he stroked her lower abdomen and hurriedly clarified, "I'm your husband, Eira. Quick, save our baby!"…Lying on the hospital bed, Eira stared blankly at the wedding ring on her finger. The deep indentation it left on her skin suggested that this marriage had lasted a long time. Yet, when she thought of the man in the room next door, all she felt was an indescribable sense of estrangement. The mome
