The hallway leading to the faculty offices was quiet, lined with dusty framed photos of past engineering graduates. The floor creaked faintly beneath Austin’s sneakers as he approached the wooden door marked:

"Engr. Mathew Udoh – Senior Lecturer, Department of Electrical Engineering."

The office door was slightly ajar. He knocked twice.

“Come in,” a voice called, calm and deep.

Austin stepped in and closed the door behind him.

The room smelled like old paper, coffee, and the faint scent of some

“I am single sis” he manged to mutterOkay I was just curiousBrian searched his sister's face, he wondered did she know something. He hoped that she was just curious and nothing more came out of itBy Sunday afternoon, the autumn sun was pale and high above the main campus quad, casting long, crisp shadows across the brick walkways. The wind blew through the red oak trees, scattering dry leaves across the open lawn where students gathered in small groups with jackets and coffee cups.Inside the high-tech varsity media complex, the atmosphere was warm, quiet, and polished.Austin Carter stood near the wide glass windows of the second-floor media lounge, holding a paper cup of black coffee in one hand, his other hand shoved casually into the pocket of his dark fleece jacket. He was staring down through the glass at the quad below, but his mind wasn't on the quiet campus layout

Chapter 72"The state worker isn't coming here to look at the furniture, Dad. They’re coming to see if Ruth has a bed, clean clothes, and food in the fridge."Brian leaned his broad back against the kitchen counter, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on the neat stack of legal papers resting beside his open laptop. The kitchen smelled of stale coffee, burnt toast, and the cold draft leaking through the frame of the back door.Arthur sat at the small wooden table, his thick, grease-stained fingers wrapped around a heavy ceramic mug. His dark suit jacket from the courtroom was slung over the back of a chair, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark hair and old scars on his skin."They're going to look at the bank statements, Brian," Arthur said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. "They're going to see a mechanic's wage and compare it to a multi-million-dollar estate on the north side of town.""And Vance is going to show them that your wage pays the rent, kee

"Put your wallet back in your pocket, Callahan, or I'm throwing it in the deep fryer."Matteo reached across the grease-stained laminate table, slapping Brian’s hand away before he could even pull his leather billfold out of his back jeans pocket. The diner near the edge of campus was loud, warm, and packed with late-night student crowds. The air smelled thick with fried onions, sizzling beef, and spilled cola. A heavy vinyl booth in the back corner gave the three of them just enough privacy away from the noise of the main counter.Brian let out a tired breath, his shoulders dropping an inch as he slumped back against the red vinyl seat. "Matt, I'm not letting your dad pay. I don't want to take advantage”"You don't have a choice, we already discussed this" Matteo said around a mouthful of bacon cheeseburger. He pointed his greasy fry at Brian for emphasis. " Besides my dad literally gave me his corporate card when I left the house tonight and said, 'Feed the captain.' If I bring back

Across campus, the warm, low hum of the varsity athlete lounge was alive with the clatter of pool balls and the bass-heavy beat of music playing from a Bluetooth speaker near the couches.Austin sat in a high-backed leather armchair in the corner of the room, his long legs stretched out in front of him, an open iPad resting on his lap showing film footage from last week's basketball scrimmage against State. He was wearing his dark navy fleece jacket over a plain white shirt, his dark eyes staring at the screen, but he hadn't hit play in over twenty minutes. His mind was stuck on the field. On the image of Brian Callahan lowering his broad shoulder, taking a brutal hit mid-air, and driving that ball into the top corner of the net.On the way Brian had looked up at him in the bleachers right after."Hey, Carter." John Doe dropped heavily onto the leather couch across from him, holding a plastic ice drinkAustin looked at him and smiled,John slurped on his drink, leaning back and restin

"Shut the door, Brian."Arthur sat behind the wheel of the silver sedan, his heavy hands gripping the black leather trim so tight his knuckles turned ghostly white under the grease stains. He didn't turn the key in the ignition. He just stared straight ahead through the dusty windshield at the grey concrete wall of the family court parking garage.Brian pulled the passenger door shut with a heavy thud, the sound echoing in the cold, enclosed air of the car. In the backseat, Lyra sat in total silence, her frantically pulling at a loose thread on the cuff of her jacket, her breath coming in quiet, ragged hitches."We still have her," Brian said, his voice flat, low, and rough against the back of his throat. "She's coming home with us today. Temporary custody means she stays in her bed tonight.""Temporary means four weeks of state workers walking through our front door with clipboards, Brian," Arthur growled, his gravelly tone cracking slightly around the edges. He finally turned to look

Now he would face the custody hearing his chest tightened as reality crashed back over his rushing adrenaline. I have to win this one, too. By one-fifteen in the afternoon, the damp grass and adrenaline of the football pitch were replaced by the cold, sterile smell of floor wax and old paper. Brian stood outside the downtown Family Court facility, his hair combed neatly, wearing a clean dark blue button-down shirt tucked into black trousers. His hands were shoved deep into his pockets to hide the slight tremor in his fingers. "Stop pacing, man," Matteo said, leaning his back against the beige wall of the hallway. He was dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer over a black shirt, looking surprisingly polished. "You look like you're about to run another ninety minutes." Beside him, James was sitting on a wooden bench, flipping through a legal pamphlet with a serious, focused expression. "He has every right to pace
