Chapter 1

The clan hall was silent as I stared at my older sister, Rhea Silverhilt, across the room with a flat expression.

On the other hand, she was practically glowing. "Mother, I fell in love the moment I saw Flint! Please let me marry him!"

Mother's expression darkened. "The wolves are notorious for their brutish ways. Flint has nothing to his name. You'll only suffer if you marry him."

Even though Rhea and I were both her children, she'd always favored Rhea. She couldn't bear the thought of her beloved Rhea suffering even the slightest discomfort.

Rhea panicked when Mother refused and anxiously paced like a cat on a hot tin roof. "I'm marrying him! If you won't allow it, I'll bash my head in right here!"

Mother nearly fainted at the threat. Terrified, she hastily consented.

When I saw the smug smile on Rhea's face, I knew that she'd been reborn too.

In our previous lives, she'd rushed to claim Drakon Ragnarok of the prestigious fire dragon clan. I had been forced into a marriage with Flint Greyfang of the wolves and had been exiled to the desolate wetlands.

After we married, I ran the house and poured my possession into his fledgling business ventures. Against all odds, Flint seized a crucial opportunity and amassed a staggering fortune.

Meanwhile, the fire dragon clan was consumed by endless war. Drakon marched into the battlefield and never returned.

Rhea became a destitute widow. The rest of the clan stripped her clean of whatever assets she had left, leaving her life in ruins.

She was bitterly convinced that I had stolen the life of luxury that was rightfully hers. During a grand sacrificial rite, she lured me out and stabbed me to death with a dagger.

"If I have to suffer, you don't get to live well either!"

The memory of her crazed, bloodshot eyes flashed through my mind, and I couldn't help clenching my fists at my side.

Since she'd decided to throw herself into hell in this new life, I would gladly show her all the support. "Since Rhea likes Flint, I'll willingly step aside."

The excitement in Rhea's eyes was almost palpable. She could already envision a life of luxury waiting for her.

Mother shot me a look of displeasure. "If Rhea hadn't graciously given up such a good match for you, you'd never amount to anything. Hurry up and thank her."

I couldn't believe how shameless they were. They were stealing from me and still wanted gratitude.

"Don't thank me," Rhea said quickly. "An older sister should let her younger sister enjoy the better things."

She couldn't wait any longer or stay for more talk. She rushed off to the wolves' pack grounds to discuss wedding plans.

Mother watched her leave with a doting smile. It vanished the moment her eyes fell on me.

"You know how tight our finances are. We can only afford one wedding gift. Since Rhea is marrying into such difficult circumstances with the wolf pack, she'll starve if we don't help or provide her with ample support."

I immediately caught the meaning behind her words and let out a cold laugh.

In our previous lives, Mother had used a different excuse when Rhea was to marry into the prestigious fire dragon clan.

"The fire dragons are nobles. She'll be looked down on without a generous wedding gift."

Either way, the wedding gift was never going to be mine. Not that I cared.

"Whatever you decide is fine, Mother."

My apparent docility seemed to unsettle her. She slipped an emerald bracelet off her wrist and handed it to me.

"This was from your grandmother on my wedding day. Now that I'm passing it to you, at least it shows I care as your mother."

Later, when Rhea learned that I was to marry Drakon instead, she nearly doubled over laughing.

"Lucky you! Everyone knows that Drakon is noble, devastatingly handsome, and every woman's dream. You'll be living like a queen.

"But I've heard that the fire dragons are always at war. Make sure you send him off safely and try not to end up being a widow too soon."

The idea of my early widowhood seemed to bring Rhea immense satisfaction while she was busy fantasizing about her rise to riches.

Still, she'd never know that, though Flint was brilliant, he was a violent wolf.

In my previous life, any tiny mistake earned me fists and kicks until there wasn't a single unbruised spot on my skin. He only stopped once I surrendered every mercantile secret I had, and after his business flourished.

Now, I wondered if Rhea could escape his brutality in this new life without those mercantile secrets to offer.

Just as the burly men were about to take the piglet away, Flint suddenly lunged forward, snatched the bundle from their arms, and slammed it onto the floor."This thing doesn't deserve to live!"The piglet's cry stopped immediately."My money!" Rhea let out a bloodcurdling scream.Ignoring her weakened condition, she scrambled off the bed, scooped up the piglet, and screamed, "Where's the healer? Bring the healer! I'll kill every last one of you if you cost me my money!"But the piglet was no longer breathing, so the burly men shook their heads. "We're not taking a dead newborn."As they turned to leave, Rhea grabbed their sleeves tightly. "No! You can't leave! I worked so hard to give birth to him, so at least give me some compensation for my trouble!"Mad at the wasted effort, the men shook her off. "Compensation? We should be demanding compensation for making us wait all this time for nothing! How dare you ask for money! Get lost!"Rhea collapsed onto the floor and wailed, b

When I opened my eyes again, Drakon was cradling our soft, pink newborn with tears streaming down his face."Look at our hatchling, Astrid… H-He's so tiny…"I couldn't help but laugh. As a first-time father, he could barely speak coherently. From the next room came Rhea's shrill screams. "Get out! All of you, get out!""Listen, Rhea! The pup's almost here!"As her cries grew sharper, they took on a fearful tone."Why does she sound terrified?" I asked, looking at Drakon. He seemed just as puzzled. "Not sure, but I've had the maids clean the house to prepare for your return. Thank you so much, Astrid." He handed the hatchling to the nursemaid and pulled me into a tight, anxious hug.It was my first time being a mother. Everything felt new and miraculous.Thankfully, Drakon had given me endless tonics throughout the pregnancy, so both the expecting months and the delivery itself went smoother than I'd expected. At least I could even walk now.Supporting myself against the wal

The healer quickly waved his hands and said, "Don't misunderstand, Mrs. Ragnarok. I ran too fast on the way here, so I'm just trying to catch my breath."He then added, "Congratulations. You're one month pregnant."No sooner had the words been spoken than Drakon lifted me high into the air. "We're having a hatchling, Astrid! I'm going to be a father!"Though dizzy from the spinning, I was nonetheless overjoyed. "Yes! And I'm going to be a mother!"Drakon had always spoiled me, but once he learned that I was expecting, he rarely left my side and guarded me from even the smallest bump. For fear that I'd grow bored at home, he handed over every shop deed under his name.I stared at the thick stack in shock. In my past life, I owned no more than 30 shops, even at my wealthiest. Drakon had just given me 50 in one breath."How do you have this many lands and shops?" I asked. I knew he was a noble and assumed this was inherited wealth.Drakon wrapped his arms around me and nuzzled my

Flint, who'd planned to tolerate Rhea for the sake of money, finally snapped. "Rhea, you dumb whore! You've completely humiliated me!"He dragged her home as she screamed. People said her shrieks could be heard across the whole neighborhood that night. That evening, I sat before my vanity when Drakon brushed his forehead against mine. "You smell wonderful, Astrid."I nudged him away with a laugh. "Today's little drama was your doing, wasn't it?"He didn't bother denying it. "She offended you first, so there's nothing wrong with me avenging my wife."He'd timed everything perfectly by sending word to the wife so she'd catch Rhea in the act.I kissed his cheek as a reward, but he was far from satisfied. After he scooped me up in his arms, I ended up begging for mercy the entire night.…Two weeks later, Rhea showed up at my door for help, bruised from head to toe. "I know I messed up, Astrid. Flint beats me up every day and locks me in the house, forbidding me from leaving… My li

When I saw Drakon standing behind me with a smile, my tears broke free. "Drakon…"Rhea's eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "That's impossible! You were supposed to die on the battlefield. How could you be back?"She never cared how well my life went, absolutely convinced that I'd end up like her—widowed, helplessly bullied, and crushed. Now that her final illusion had shattered right before her eyes, she completely unraveled.Drakon's eyes were cold as he snapped, "How could I ever bear to die with such a wonderful wife waiting for me at home?"His safe return meant that my life would stay unchanged. Most importantly, Rhea also had to repay every debt herself.Furious, Flint grabbed a handful of her hair and slammed her head against the wall.Terrified, Mother burst into tears and screamed at me, "Are you just going to watch Rhea get beaten to death? Give her the money she needs to pay the debts!"I laughed. "Funny you'd say that, Mother. Once married, a woman is supposed to prio

What truly shocked me was Flint's huge business success. He'd recently made a significant profit.Rhea threw a lavish celebration. When we arrived, Flint had his arm wrapped possessively around her waist, making a toast."To have such a kind, virtuous wife is a blessing from god! My fortunes have soared ever since she came into my life!"Those who'd once looked down on him were now falling over themselves to offer their compliments. No one wanted to be on the bad side of new money, after all.Rhea was visibly triumphant as she basked in their flattery. Her gaze skipped past the crowd and fell on me. She hooked a finger in my direction, motioning me closer. "Why aren't you sitting by my side, Astrid?" she asked. "I've heard Drakon's being sent to the front, and oh, I'm so worried for you! What will you ever do if something happens to him?"Sure enough, Drakon was leaving. Though he'd promised he'd be back next month, I knew that his chances were slim. Before he left, he'd taken
