Chapter 17
Everyone’s eyes grew wide in shock, all eyes fell on Anna who still held the gun firmly.
The butler crumbled to his knees, blood gushing out of his shot arm.
“I figured it’s better to clear the problem from the grassroot rather than focus on the weeds which have spread far. If the butler had supervised the maid’s work properly, this would never have happened. It would teach him to do his job right from henceforth,” Anna spoke sharply.
Her face hardened, her eyes remained fixed on the butler who now whimpered in pain. She bit her own tongue to control the flicker of guilt from passing through her eyes.
She dropped the gun on the table and gave a polite bow to the Don before seeing herself out of the dining hall. As she walked, she could feel the boring eyes on her back, but she didn’t let it deter her as she left the dining hall.
The shock took its time to register on them, then the Don let out a smile of approval before seeing himself out of the room. Domenico left too, leaving Leone, the butler, and the maid who remained on her knees.
“Interesting,” a chuckle flew out of Leone’s lips. “Go get your wound treated, Steward,” he dismissed the butler and the maid, who could only thank her lucky stars for being alive.
……..
Anna paced back and forth in her room. Honestly, she didn’t know where she summoned that courage from to shoot the butler.
Even if the butler had been nothing but a thorn in her flesh, she felt bad. The guilt weighed heavily on her heart, but it was the only way she could think of to make sure no one died.
She figured if she had shot the maid on her arm, certainly they would want her to finish the job of killing her. But the butler, a loyal servant of the mafia clan—he was an asset they wouldn’t want to lose.
Thanks to her quick thinking, she had escaped this, but that didn’t mean she would if she were to attempt such again. None of this would have happened if she hadn’t gone through that door last night, if she had just returned back to her room. And then there was also Leone, who made it his life’s mission to ensure she didn’t get out of this unscathed.
She hoped the butler would recover quickly. At least now, he would be off her neck, right? With this issue barely swept out, she had to start thinking about Domenico all over again.
Leone’s words that night hit her: “I must admit that your fear entertains me. You might have gotten it over with last night if I didn’t interrupt, but where’s the fun in that? He’s on a trip right now, and till he’s back, you’ll have to continue living with that fear of it happening, which I feed on.”
True to his words, she was living the same fear all over again.
………
Leone’s Mansion…
Leone stood at the balcony, smoking weed from his vape pen as usual. His eyes narrowed when he felt someone behind him.
“Nice of you to show up and finally pay a visit, brother,” he said without even looking back.
Domenico narrowed his eyes, he balled his fist tightly. “I’ve been all over the country and Albania for the past two weeks, gathering my weapons which you destroyed,” he seethed.
“That is a strong accusation, Nico. Why would I do that to my dear, loving brother?” He turned back to stare at him, a smirk on his face which irked Domenico even more.
Domenico didn’t need a soothsayer to tell him this maniac was the one behind the fire, behind Diego’s death, and every other mayhem in this empire. He just needed evidence—just one slip-up from him was all he needed to make sure this bastard landed in a cell right next to his precious prisoner.
“You may think you’re smart, but you’re only inching closer to the trap I laid out for you,” Domenico’s brown eyes hardened, the level of distaste toward Leone evident in them.
“Inching?” Leone let out a dark chuckle. “I already jumped right into your trap and made the territory my own. You’re simply a part-timer there,” he winked.
Domenico shook with rage, tongue-tied. He always acted savvy, like he knew it all, like he was above everyone all the time.
“Say what you want, you’ll always be nothing more than the son of a wretched servant,” he smirked before taking his leave.
The smile on Leone’s face had evaporated into thin air, to be replaced by a grim expression. His eyes as cold as metal, his lips set into a thin, firm line.
Rico walked in, and his back straightened on noticing Leone’s foul mood. He had seen Domenico make his way here and had patiently waited outside because he didn’t want to be dragged into the middle of their heated conversation.
One reason why he had lasted in this empire for so long was his ability to avoid trouble. He didn’t like Domenico, but that didn’t mean he would try to get in the way—not when he was powerless compared to Leone.
Of course, he wanted his boss, Leone, as the future Don of the Vicenzo empire, but there was only little he could do on his end other than following his boss’s orders. Sometimes his crazy-ass boss would send him to dig his own grave in the so-called name of an errand—those times, he had to use his brains to save his own life.
He bowed politely before clearing his throat to deliver the news which had brought him here. “The investigator just brought this in, boss. The girl isn’t the biological daughter of the Lorenzos,” he reported, handing the document over to Leone.
Leone took the document from him, his shrewd eyes scanned through it for confirmation, and a dark glint appeared in his eyes.
Chapter 36Domenico struggled for breath, his own life flashing in front of him. He tried using both his hands to free himself from Leone’s grip, but his attempts were futile, and it seemed like this time around Leone was really intent on killing him. Tears spilled from his eyes as he battled for his life.“Leone,” the Don called, and Leone rolled his eyes before letting go of Domenico’s neck. Domenico gasped for breath, his eyes dilating as his lungs struggled to collect the air.“Anything but that, Leone. You know that,” Enzo said, his tone grave.“No one touches what is mine. You know that, Don,” Leone’s jaw ticked as he stared at his father, who was ready to pull all strings to ensure he didn’t lose his son.It was shameful that Domenico, the future Don of this empire, now had his life in the hands of his younger brother. He didn’t want anyone witnessing this.Enzo took a sharp breath in. “Anything else but that,” his tone sharp and clear, his eyes unwavering. He walked away from
Chapter 35Enzo stood at a far corner, with a grim expression on his face, his lips pressed into a thin line. He watched Domenico and his men carry out their work. He already knew how this was going to end, and the thought of it all made him shake his head.Yes, it was true that Diego had been his consigliere, and the least he owed him for his dedication to the empire was a decent burial, but what he also didn’t need was any of his sons going 6 feet under the ground. His memory jogged back to the conversation he had with Leone:“Dig around my tree, huh?” Leone chuckled, something that left him a bit starstruck because everyone knew how much he cherished that tree—the only standing memory he had left of his late mother because she planted the tree herself.“Alright then.” Leone’s eyes remained a wild shade of gray.Enzo knew neither of his sons were normal, but this one—Leone—his was on an entirely different level.“So you are okay with digging around the tree, to clear your name from
Chapter 34Anna’s eyes remained wide. For a moment, it felt like time had paused between them as she tried to process the words he just said.He wasn’t being his usual irksome self. His gray eyes were calm and held a kind of warmth she had never seen in them since she knew him, but yet she couldn’t completely trust him. Why? Just why was he suddenly telling her he liked her? When he knew too well that she was going to get married to Domenico. Aside from that, she had no feelings for this man. She liked Rocco. Even if she had let him touch her that night, that didn’t mean anything, right? That didn’t mean she wanted any of this.“I don’t have feelings for you.” The only feeling she had felt towards him up until now was immense hatred. That was it.“I didn’t say that ’cause I give two fucks about what you feel.” She felt his grip on her waist tighten. “I said that as an answer to your question.” He flashed her an insincere smile.Anna blinked twice as she stared at him, and then he let
Chapter 33Domenico’s eyes flew wide. He wasn’t stupid enough to miss the hidden meaning behind his words. He gritted his teeth, his fist clenched. A second later, Domenico lunged towards Leone, grabbing the collar of his shirt. He dragged him up and slammed his back on the wall.“I’ll kill you,” he gritted. “Your heart will rest in my hands.” His body shook fervently as he boiled with rage, while Leone, on the other hand, appeared calm—like he was an angel from heaven. But everyone knew he was the master puppeteer of the devil in hell. “Too much anger makes people shorter,” Leone raised his hand to pat Domenico’s head, which flared his anger even more.He raised his hand to throw a punch at him, but Leone, being taller and far stronger, easily caught it, twisted his hand behind him, and slammed his face on the wall. Domenico grunted in pain. Not just his hand but he felt like his ego was twisted also. His jaw hardened, and he skillfully reached for a dagger in his pocket, but Leone
Chapter 32Her eyes flew wide, his action accentuated by the crackling sound in the burning fireplace. Her lips parted repeatedly, tongue-tied and speechless at what he had just done. She rubbed her now bare neck, which hadn’t been hurt when he tugged the necklace off, as he had done it with so much precision.“You—” she tore her eyes away from the fireplace, now glaring at him, who was already looking down at her. “You had no right to do that.” She took a sharp breath in, trying to build back her resolve, which always seemed to crumble anytime she was with him.“Hmm? Don’t I?” He chuckled, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.Anna was perplexed. What was she going to say once Domenico asked her for the necklace he had given her? What if he hit her—or worse—when she couldn’t provide it?She balled her fists as a tear slipped out of her eyes. She hit his chest repeatedly. “What the hell is your problem, Leone?” Her voice broke at the end.She bit her lip hard, staring back at him
Chapter 31She gulped saliva down her dry throat. How the hell was she going to get out of this now? The last time, Leone had saved her, but this time, she was scared that there might be no saving for her.The man showed them to their room, and her breath ceased when he left them alone. The room was extremely large and luxuriously furnished. Anna’s eyes fell back to him, her back nearly colliding with the door frame. He had taken off his jacket, leaving him with a white inner shirt, and now he busied himself with taking his wristwatch off.“Anna, come see this,” he raised his head up to stare at her, and Anna reluctantly pushed herself to stand next to him. He showed her the golden wristwatch which he had earlier worn. “It was purchased from the first goldsmith in Italy in 1971 by an ancestor from my father’s lineage,” he explained.Anna nodded. Although slightly interested, the only thing she wanted was to get the hell out of here. But if that was true, it meant the Vicenzo lineage
