Chapter 9
Saint Mark Hospital – 10 a.m.
Her blue eyes flew open, a gasp tore through her lips. Her eyes darted around the room. Where… where was she?
Her feet became cold. Memories of her life in the Lorenzo Empire hit her—the cold room, left alone in the darkness after being sedated. It was so terrible that she couldn’t use her limbs for a whole day, and she would be left alone there without food, light, or water.
She quickly sprang up from the bed, her bare feet padding against the cold tiles, and then she flung the door open only to be greeted by a broad chest.
She slowly looked up—Leone. What was he doing here? She gulped.
“Seems like you’re all better now, Miss Runaway Bride,” a not-so-soothing smile rested on his lips, making her heart race.
She didn’t know what came over her, but now that she studied her surroundings, she realized she was in a hospital ward. Her eyes fell back on him. Had he… brought her here?
“Wh—what are you doing here?” she stuttered.
Leone noted that she was all better, unlike the corpse she looked like the previous night. Her face had regained color.
Ignoring her earlier question, he walked inside and slammed the door. And as if feeding on her fear, he also locked the door with the key, placing it in his pocket.
Her blood ran cold, her breath caught in her throat. She hadn’t forgotten how he had aimed his gun at her and even pulled the trigger. Was he here to complete his mission? To kill her?
She took a few steps back, but he easily matched them with just one stride from his long legs. She gasped once her leg hit the bed and then fell on it.
He stood in front of her. She felt so small and helpless in his presence.
His hand held her chin—his grip wasn’t firm, but enough to let her know he had her where he wanted her. “Nowhere to run to now, Annalisa.”
Her insides churned on hearing her full name. Her heart hitched when his large hand easily palmed her throat, making her stare into his gray eyes. Something sinister swirled within them.
His cologne was musky, laced with something dark and expensive.
This man… he had seen her stark naked. Her cheeks burned in embarrassment. No one had ever seen her nakedness before. Her chastity was as good as dead in front of him.
Her lips parted. “Why did you do it?” Her voice was barely audible, but he picked it up quite well.
“I know you’re a bit dimwitted, but you have to be a little specific.”
Her eyes narrowed, glaring at him, ignorant of the fact that one little snap of her delicate neck was all it would take for her to join her ancestors.
“Why did you do that? You saw me in the shower naked, but you still stayed there and stared at—”
“Stared at what exactly, hm?” he cut her off, his eyes livid with mirth. “Don’t tell me it’s those two little moles you have on your chest.”
Her eyes flew wide in shock, color drained from her face at how blunt his words were. How dare he say that?
“What is it, Anna?” He pushed her buttons even more.
Anna’s blood boiled. As much as she wanted to correct his rude remark, he hadn’t pointed out what he was talking about, and if she were to stand up to him, it would sound like she was agreeing with him. That, and his hand was still wrapped around her throat.
This shrewd man! Her brows knotted. “Standing there even after seeing a lady naked is completely wrong! And then you almost shot me—if you hadn’t missed,” she snarled.
“I missed?” he half-questioned sarcastically. “That’s very new information.”
Anna inhaled sharply. He hadn’t missed then? He had simply done it to scare her… but the look she saw in his eyes that night—like a demon ready to slaughter.
And then the question that had been haunting her mind: “Why did you bring me here, Leone?”
He finally let go of her neck, taking a few steps away from her, which she was very thankful for, as she was finally able to catch her breath.
Now that she stared at his full frame, she felt the stark difference between them. One had everything that commanded respect, whereas she was the total opposite—and to crown it all, she wasn’t Lorenzo’s biological child. At least he didn’t know that.
“Why?” he repeated, his voice deep and velvety. “Because you’re mine.”
Hearing this, her mouth flew wide in shock, her eyes almost bulged out of their sockets. Did she hear right?
A wide grin formed on his lips on seeing her reaction. “Mine to kill and dispose,” he deadpanned.
She should have known. She scowled, her lips tightening in frustration. He was obviously insane, and one of these days, she was sure he would infect her with his madness.
“What were you thinking, Peach?” He tilted his head to the side.
Anna shook her head, too exhausted to keep up with his madness. Her eyes began feeling heavy, and she just wanted to go back to bed again.
Thankfully, his phone began ringing, taking his attention from her. She watched him turn his broad back on her, and she took her lips in. Earlier, when she had been trying to get out of the ward, it felt like she had come face-to-face with a wall. How does one achieve such great physique? If he weren’t a psychopath, she’d have called him more than an eligible bachelor.
Even from the sides, she couldn’t lie about how attractive he looked. His sharp jawline and his black tousled hair… it seemed like he was sculpted not by the gods but by the devil.
His eyes snapped back to her, making her heart hitch for a second. “I’m taking my leave now. Be good.” His words were commanding—too commanding—like he owned her.
“The guards will take you back to the mansion after your treatment.” Anna could only nod as she watched his retreating figure, and then his feet suddenly halted. He turned back to stare at her.
“It’d be best if you tame that little mouth of yours. We don’t want poor Rocco dead now, do we?” He flashed her a sinister smirk, and Anna felt the blood drain completely from her body.
Chapter 36Domenico struggled for breath, his own life flashing in front of him. He tried using both his hands to free himself from Leone’s grip, but his attempts were futile, and it seemed like this time around Leone was really intent on killing him. Tears spilled from his eyes as he battled for his life.“Leone,” the Don called, and Leone rolled his eyes before letting go of Domenico’s neck. Domenico gasped for breath, his eyes dilating as his lungs struggled to collect the air.“Anything but that, Leone. You know that,” Enzo said, his tone grave.“No one touches what is mine. You know that, Don,” Leone’s jaw ticked as he stared at his father, who was ready to pull all strings to ensure he didn’t lose his son.It was shameful that Domenico, the future Don of this empire, now had his life in the hands of his younger brother. He didn’t want anyone witnessing this.Enzo took a sharp breath in. “Anything else but that,” his tone sharp and clear, his eyes unwavering. He walked away from
Chapter 35Enzo stood at a far corner, with a grim expression on his face, his lips pressed into a thin line. He watched Domenico and his men carry out their work. He already knew how this was going to end, and the thought of it all made him shake his head.Yes, it was true that Diego had been his consigliere, and the least he owed him for his dedication to the empire was a decent burial, but what he also didn’t need was any of his sons going 6 feet under the ground. His memory jogged back to the conversation he had with Leone:“Dig around my tree, huh?” Leone chuckled, something that left him a bit starstruck because everyone knew how much he cherished that tree—the only standing memory he had left of his late mother because she planted the tree herself.“Alright then.” Leone’s eyes remained a wild shade of gray.Enzo knew neither of his sons were normal, but this one—Leone—his was on an entirely different level.“So you are okay with digging around the tree, to clear your name from
Chapter 34Anna’s eyes remained wide. For a moment, it felt like time had paused between them as she tried to process the words he just said.He wasn’t being his usual irksome self. His gray eyes were calm and held a kind of warmth she had never seen in them since she knew him, but yet she couldn’t completely trust him. Why? Just why was he suddenly telling her he liked her? When he knew too well that she was going to get married to Domenico. Aside from that, she had no feelings for this man. She liked Rocco. Even if she had let him touch her that night, that didn’t mean anything, right? That didn’t mean she wanted any of this.“I don’t have feelings for you.” The only feeling she had felt towards him up until now was immense hatred. That was it.“I didn’t say that ’cause I give two fucks about what you feel.” She felt his grip on her waist tighten. “I said that as an answer to your question.” He flashed her an insincere smile.Anna blinked twice as she stared at him, and then he let
Chapter 33Domenico’s eyes flew wide. He wasn’t stupid enough to miss the hidden meaning behind his words. He gritted his teeth, his fist clenched. A second later, Domenico lunged towards Leone, grabbing the collar of his shirt. He dragged him up and slammed his back on the wall.“I’ll kill you,” he gritted. “Your heart will rest in my hands.” His body shook fervently as he boiled with rage, while Leone, on the other hand, appeared calm—like he was an angel from heaven. But everyone knew he was the master puppeteer of the devil in hell. “Too much anger makes people shorter,” Leone raised his hand to pat Domenico’s head, which flared his anger even more.He raised his hand to throw a punch at him, but Leone, being taller and far stronger, easily caught it, twisted his hand behind him, and slammed his face on the wall. Domenico grunted in pain. Not just his hand but he felt like his ego was twisted also. His jaw hardened, and he skillfully reached for a dagger in his pocket, but Leone
Chapter 32Her eyes flew wide, his action accentuated by the crackling sound in the burning fireplace. Her lips parted repeatedly, tongue-tied and speechless at what he had just done. She rubbed her now bare neck, which hadn’t been hurt when he tugged the necklace off, as he had done it with so much precision.“You—” she tore her eyes away from the fireplace, now glaring at him, who was already looking down at her. “You had no right to do that.” She took a sharp breath in, trying to build back her resolve, which always seemed to crumble anytime she was with him.“Hmm? Don’t I?” He chuckled, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.Anna was perplexed. What was she going to say once Domenico asked her for the necklace he had given her? What if he hit her—or worse—when she couldn’t provide it?She balled her fists as a tear slipped out of her eyes. She hit his chest repeatedly. “What the hell is your problem, Leone?” Her voice broke at the end.She bit her lip hard, staring back at him
Chapter 31She gulped saliva down her dry throat. How the hell was she going to get out of this now? The last time, Leone had saved her, but this time, she was scared that there might be no saving for her.The man showed them to their room, and her breath ceased when he left them alone. The room was extremely large and luxuriously furnished. Anna’s eyes fell back to him, her back nearly colliding with the door frame. He had taken off his jacket, leaving him with a white inner shirt, and now he busied himself with taking his wristwatch off.“Anna, come see this,” he raised his head up to stare at her, and Anna reluctantly pushed herself to stand next to him. He showed her the golden wristwatch which he had earlier worn. “It was purchased from the first goldsmith in Italy in 1971 by an ancestor from my father’s lineage,” he explained.Anna nodded. Although slightly interested, the only thing she wanted was to get the hell out of here. But if that was true, it meant the Vicenzo lineage
