Alessandro had barely settled behind his desk after another grueling meeting two hours later when the vibration of his phone broke the quiet of his office. The sound seemed louder than usual in the stillness, echoing faintly against the glass walls and polished floors.

For a moment, he considered ignoring it. God knew he had enough problems to deal with already. But the moment he pulled the phone from his pocket and saw the name flashing across the screen, the thought died immediately.

“I’m so sorry, sir.” Claudia’s voice came from behind Helena, tight with embarrassment and a hint of panic. “She barged in before I could stop her.”Alessandro looked past Helena to Claudia for a brief moment, then back at the woman standing in the middle of his office. His expression remained blank, but his eyes lingered on her face, taking in the fury burning there.Helena Duarte was glaring at him as if she wanted to set him on fire with nothing but the force of her hatred. For a fleeting second, Alessandro wondered if it was possible. The look in her eyes certainly suggested it.“It’s okay, Claudia,” he said calmly, pushing himself upright from the sofa where he had been resting. “You can go.” He lifted a hand and waved her away dismissively.Claudia hesitated for a moment. Her eyes flicked toward Helena, and the look she shot her was anything but friendly. Then she turned and walked out of the office, closing the door firmly behind her.The moment the door clicked shut, the air i

God knew he had enough problems to deal with already. But the moment he pulled the phone from his pocket and saw the name flashing across the screen, the thought died immediately.Giovanni Guidotti.Alessandro exhaled slowly through his nose, his jaw tightening.“Think of the devil and he calls,” he muttered under his breath. There was no avoiding it. There never was.He accepted the call and placed the phone on speaker, setting it on the glass surface of his desk. The office fell back into silence, thick and tense.Neither of them spoke.Alessandro leaned back in his chair slightly, staring at the ceiling for a moment before lowering his gaze to the phone. He knew this tactic we

The screens in the boardroom now displayed a wall of transaction logs—lines of numbers, dates, and authorization codes stretching seemingly endlessly. Claudia hovered by Alessandro’s side, ready to pull any document he requested. Alessandro’s eyes scanned the entries slowly, absorbing each detail. He didn’t speak immediately. Instead, he watched the room.He noticed small tells.Victor Landry’s fingers drummed nervously against the table. Every time the ledger updated, his eyes flicked to the edge of the screen, as if he feared something would appear he couldn’t control.Helena Duarte, on the other hand, was eerily calm—too calm. Her tablet was angled just slightly away from view, and she kept her lip pressed tight. Someone like her could hide a hundred irregularities without blinking.Matteo Russo, who had always been loud and brash, was unusually quiet. He leaned back in his chair with arms crossed, but Alessandro saw the tension in his shoulders. If a mistake was made in construc

Alessandro heard none of it—or rather, he chose not to acknowledge it. His expression remained unreadable. His steps steady. He ignored the looks. Ignored the silence. Because his mind was already several steps ahead.Someone was trying to steal from him.And if there was one thing Alessandro Guidotti did not tolerate— It was theft. As he crossed the lobby, the security team immediately moved aside. The elevator opened before he even reached it. Inside, the ride to the executive floor felt shorter than usual. When the doors opened again, his secretary Claudia Rinaldi, was already waiting. Her eyes widened slightly when she saw him.“You shouldn’t be here yet,” she said carefully.“I’m here,” Alessandro replied flatly. "To work." That was all the explanation he gave.“Is everyone here?” he asked.“Yes. They’re assembling in the boardroom now.”“Good.”Because Alessandro had already seen enough numbers in those reports to know something was wrong. And he intended to find out exactly wh

Michael Hobbs had been driving for Alessandro Guidotti long enough to know two things. First—his boss was not a reasonable man. Second—questioning that fact was the fastest way to lose a job that paid far better than any chauffeur position had a right to.Still, even with that understanding firmly planted in his head, Michael couldn’t help thinking the same thing as he steered the sleek black sedan through the morning traffic. It was insane. Absolutely insane. A man who had taken two bullets to the body less than a week ago was supposed to be at home recovering, preferably in bed, with a doctor hovering somewhere nearby.Instead, that same man was currently on his way to work. Michael kept his eyes on the road, though the thought lingered. If he were allowed to give his opinion—which he very much was not—he would have said something about rest, recovery, and basic human self-preservation.But Michael also enjoyed paying his mortgage. And the fastest way to lose that comfort was to sta

Thinking back on it now, Maya could still remember how uncomfortable she had felt that night. The room had been filled with sharply dressed men and women who carried themselves with the kind of confidence that came from wealth and influence. Everyone seemed to know exactly what they were talking about—stocks, deals, politics, industries Maya had no connection to. She had stood beside Eric most of the evening, smiling politely and nodding when people spoke, but inside she had felt painfully out of place.Like someone who had accidentally wandered into the wrong world. Across the table, Maddie looked like Maya had just described the most exciting experience imaginable.“I would have loved it,” Maddie said thoughtfully while spearing a piece of lettuce with her fork. “Being in the same room as the elite men and women who literally run this country.”Maya scrunched up her nose as she scooped up some rice. “Yeah,” she said dryly. “Parties like that are your scene.”Maddie thrived in socia
