Chapter 3

Author: Iris
The next morning, I woke up to a loud commotion.

The living room was filled with people who had come to celebrate my birthday.

I was taken aback.

Ever since my mother passed away, I had not celebrated my birthday. It had been ten years.

I looked around. My mother’s portraits had all been replaced by Jelena’s.

The butler said, “Mr. Scott asked for it. He wants Miss Katie to feel happy when she sees them.”

The guests talked among themselves.

“Did you hear that the shops Claire’s mother left behind have all been transferred under Jelena’s name?”

“Tsk… tsk. The real mate worked hard her entire life, only for it all to go to the mistress.”

“Hush! Pipe down. She’s now Gerald’s mate.”

Jelena wore my mother’s jewelry as she smiled brightly. I could not hold back my anger and slapped her.

She fell limply against my father and wiped away her tears as she said, “I know that you don’t like me, Claire, but this is a happy occasion. I just have one small wish. Please, let me be with your father for the rest of our lives. I’ll take care of you in your mother’s place.”

She did not say that today was also my mother’s death anniversary.

My eyes turned red as power roared within me, but my father squashed it down. “Jelena will be your mother from now on. She put a lot of effort into throwing you a birthday party. Be a little forgiving.”

Just then, Katie walked in while holding Scott’s arm.

“Happy birthday, my princess!” Scott said lovingly and handed me a black-and-gold box.

“My God! That’s the limited-edition gift box Almera Auction sells every year!” a guest cried out.

“A mysterious buyer bought it at a high price last month. I wasn’t expecting it to be Scott!”

“What a loving man! Claire is so lucky!”

But I did not care for it.

A limited-edition gift box? A loving man?

I did not care about any of it.

All I cared about was the gown Katie was wearing.

My mother sewed that gown for me while she was on her deathbed.

“Take it off.” I glared at her as my voice trembled.

Katie’s eyes welled up with tears, and she hid behind Scott.

I reached out to grab her.

The guests were not expecting me to show such blatant disrespect toward Scott, and they sucked in deep breaths.

Scott said gently but firmly, “Stop making a fuss, Claire. If you like this, I’ll bring a designer back home and make another one for you, okay?”

But nothing was registering in my head at this point. All I wanted was to retrieve the gown my mother had made for me.

Scott grabbed my shoulders. “Claire, calm down! You’re pregnant!”

“I’m sorry!”

Suddenly, Katie knelt and screamed as she tore at the gown’s collar.

“I know that you look down on me. You always mistreated me! I’ll take it off and return it to you!”

When we were still studying in school, she would hurt herself and blame me for it.

Just like in the past, everyone thought I was a spoiled, arrogant brat who loved mistreating others.

The guests whispered and looked down on me.

“To think that she’s so spoiled…”

“Even if she’s illegitimate, she’s still her sister. Why is she so mean to her?”

Scott took off his jacket and draped it across Katie’s shoulder. Then, for the first time, he shot me a cold look.

“Claire, apologize.”

But I did not react.

All I could see was Katie tearing apart what my mother had left for me.

My vision blurred as I cried.

Scott looked at me in shock and wanted to reach out to me. “Claire…”

But before he could touch me, Katie pretended to reach me first, only to shove me away when she got closer.

My back slammed against the metal handrail of the stairs, and pain spread through my entire body.

As for Katie, she crashed into the cake. Icing was smeared all over her face. She looked pathetic.

“Why did you push me, Claire?!”

Scott was drinking himself ragged when the butler handed him a phone. It was only then that he found out that his affair with Katie had been exposed a long time ago. The butler had shown him the security footage from the clinic. He saw Claire lying on the floor, covered in blood. People pushed her, threw water at her, and insulted her.At that time, he had been on a holiday with Katie. “The doctor said that Miss Claire did not have a single penny with her at that time…”Never before had he realized just how stupid and blind he had been. He had always thought that he pampered Claire and gave her the greatest happiness in her life, but in reality, he had driven both her and their pup to the edge!Regret overwhelmed Scott. “Bring Katie here,” he gritted his teeth and said. When the bodyguards brought Katie into Scott’s study, she did not know what had happened. She grumbled, “Scott, they’re hurting me…”But when she saw the monitor, her face changed, and tears streamed

Katie looked at Gerald and Jelena for help, but Scott pulled her back to him. If looks could kill, he would probably have killed her already. “I pitied you, but you set me up.”Gerald pulled himself free from Jelena and walked over happily to shake hands with Hoills, only to hear Hoills chuckle. “Don’t thank me yet.”Everyone fell silent, and David brought out a sealed will from my mother. He read it out aloud. “Based on Clause 7 of Magnolia’s will, if any abnormal trades occur under the hands of the entrusted shareholders, their right to hold the shares on behalf of Miss Claire will be automatically revoked.“All profits from the shares sold today will belong to Miss Claire.”Gerald fell back into his chair.Jelena screamed, “Have you lost your mind?! Claire, this is a betrayal! You’re a traitor to the Sunfang Pack!”I found her words hilarious. “Didn’t Gerald say that he wants to hand over the shares to someone better to manage them? Why is he so reluctant to give them up n

Katie tilted her head in mock pity. “I admit that you’re a proper werewolf with an Alpha bloodline, but that doesn’t matter. Just live out the rest of your days alone!”Jelena patted Katie’s hand, trying to appease her. “What nonsense. Gerald is sick, and it’ll cost too much to hire a Moon Priestess from other packs to cure him. After we leave, we have to live a frugal life too. We’re not abandoning Claire. We’re just trying not to drag her down with us.”Gerald nodded with a smile and approved of what Jelena said. They were waiting for me to break down and demand an answer from them or to beg Gerald not to abandon me, just like in the past. But I just calmly asked them whether they had acquired the right to change their territory yet. Gerald was stunned before he nodded. “Of course. We’ve gone through the procedure.”“Good.” I turned to David. “Since they don’t want their original territory anymore, buy it.”Their smiles froze. Katie was the first to recover from her sho

Katie’s reaction made Scott want to laugh out loud. He had misjudged her. She really just wanted money. In the past, he had pitied her. At present, he hated her. Five years ago, his sister had jumped off a building because she was mistreated. On the same day, he met Katie, who cried and said that she was mistreated, ostracized, and humiliated by her own family. As he looked at her face, his heart went out to her because she reminded him of his sister. He protected her, doted on her, and fell in love with her. But Scott’s mother had offered Katie money to break up with him, and she had gone to another pack immediately. Later, she returned and put on a pitiful act to ask for his help. In the beginning, he felt indignant since she had dumped him. He had not rejected her advances immediately. He had indulged her whim, and Katie took advantage of it as she took him to a hotel when he was drunk. She had lied to him and said that she was Claire. That night, he had been comp

“H-Hoills…” stammered the pregnant she-wolf who had been the most aggressive of the lot. The others talked about Hoills in quiet whispers. Hoills was born to be the heir of the Sunfang Pack, but after our mother passed away, he left the pack and carved out his own future until he became the Lycan Chairman. When the members of the other nine great packs saw him, they had to treat him with utmost respect. All the unbonded she-wolves longed to become his mate. But a month ago, he announced that he was never going to take a mate. It crushed the hopes of all the families who had wished for their daughters to become his mate and form a political alliance. Everyone thought that he had gone mad. Hoills had a wealth of assets and immense power, but no one was going to inherit it.Hoills removed his jacket and picked me up, even though I was dirty and bleeding. “Get a helicopter ready. We’re leaving now.” Those were the first words he spoke that day.The people around him immed

“Katie!”Scott and my father immediately ran toward her. No one noticed the blood oozing out from between my thighs. Scott covered Katie with his jacket, and my father held Jelena. The entire group rushed to the hospital, but before they left, Scott turned to me in disappointment. “Claire, it seems like I’ve spoiled you. Please think about what you’ve done.”In the blink of an eye, the hall was empty. With trembling hands, I called the hospital, only to be told that all of my supplementary cards had been frozen by either my father or Scott. Ocean’s Heart had fallen on the floor at some point. As I stared at it, I cried. Scott’s love was really just him trying to tame me. He gave me the best cage and the best food so that I would think that I was a princess. But once I disobeyed him, he would stop giving me money until I apologized to him. I no longer wanted his “love.”…Seven days passed. I heard nothing from my father or Scott. Meanwhile, Katie kept uploading
