Sam’s POV
I smelled my mate at this event. When I saw her approach with Vincent, I nearly attacked him. He was flirting with my Luna! I instantly imprinted myself with Eva, and she was completely unaware. I assumed she was human until she nearly killed Vicky. My pack doesn’t kill unless it is the only way. I am going to have to train my mate, but it won’t be easy. Eva doesn’t strike me as a submissive, and if I try to use an Alpha Command, she could very well use one on me. Hers could even be stronger than mine.
Eric called her Midnight Rose. I know exactly who she is because some of my pack, especially my nephew, idolize her. She is an immensely talented writer, yet she seems oblivious to the topics she writes about. How can I make her understand that most of what she has written exists?
End Sam’s POV
Eric looks me in the eye, “Eva, please stop.”
I'm mad, “Why should I? You obviously won't put her in her place, so I will. She's part of your problem!” I let up, but only a bit, because I recognized her now. I know exactly why I was creeped out earlier, and it wasn't because of the guy; it was because of her. It was because I remembered her from a few weeks ago.
Eric is shocked, “What?”
I'm just going to spit it out, “She's sloppy and careless. I recognize her now. Last week, she attempted to hurt a young man. I stopped her, but never got a look at her face. I just feel it's her, plus her voice is familiar.”
Vicky tries to defend herself, “But I didn't...”
Sam doesn't let her finish, “Wait! My nephew?”
I ask, “Is his name Steven?” He says yes, as he glares at Vicky, while she still tries to plead her innocence. I have nothing to lose, so I fully speak my mind. “Then why do I keep seeing pictures of the event when I look into your mind? You don't hide well either. You have no mental walls. Perhaps out of weakness or just plain arrogance. You think because you married power, that
alone means you're powerful. But you are very mistaken, because the only person who can make you powerful is yourself.”
Eric asks, “Do you know who I am?”
I reply, “No, but I'm guessing, since you organized this and tracked me down, then you must be powerful and not just because of your infinite resources either.” I turned to Vicky, “Why did you need Steven?”
Vicky says, “To stop you and those like you. You're going to ruin everything she has planned.”
I'm so pissed off and confused. This woman and some of her cronies attacked a high school kid. I glared at Vicky, “What the hell are you talking about?”
Vicky replied, “The ritual.” Then she burst into flames before she turned into ashes. Katie screamed, but I calmed her down as the guys watched me intently.
Eric asks, “Have you always had this gift?”
“I've always been able to read people and sometimes see things. More has happened since earlier this past year,” I say.
Sam pats my knee, “Well, my family owes you for saving Steven.”
I can't have Sam thinking that he owes me. “No one owes me anything. l would gladly do it again. I was just in the right place at the right time.”
Matter of factly, Sam says, “That's why we owe you.”
Eric suggests, “Let me introduce Katie to some great people, and then we will talk further.”
I glare at Eric, “Fine, but if…”
He smirks, “Nothing will happen. Everything is fine.” He has that same voice that pulls me in. What are these guys? Vicky called me food. Are they all vampires? No, but maybe. Sam seems different, though. His nephew nearly shifted, so that must make Sam a werewolf, but why do I feel so drawn to each of these men? Hell, what am I? I just strangled a woman with my mind. What made her explode, though? Was it me?
Eric’s POV
I brought Midnight Rose here because I needed her help. Turns out my wife was part of the problem. I am going to have to do damage control to explain what happened. I am also going to have to figure out why Sam and Vincent are so close to Eva. Once I got close to Eva, I knew that she was my mate. But her closeness to the others has me thinking, not to mention her bizarre powers. She isn’t a vampire or a shifter, and I doubt she is a witch. I just know now that she isn’t human, as I had assumed. I am likely going to need a few bottles of scotch to get through this conversation.
I say, “I did.”Katie replies, “She's quite talented. She's won awards, too.”He looks at me, “I bet she has.”Katie asks, “Mind if I borrow one of your books and go to bed?” He tells her that he doesn't mind. Katie wishes us good night as she grabs a book before whispering to me, “Please do everything I would do, and most importantly, those things that I wouldn't do.”I sigh, “Seriously?!”She says, “Girl, I'm not blind.”I say, “Just go to bed. I'm gonna pull some pajamas out.” I rushed to my room and put on my silky pink and black pajamas. I went back to find Vincent in the living room. “Much better. I hung my dress up in the hall closet. I hope that's ok,” I tell him.He says, “It’s fine.”I'm nervous and I don't want him in my mind, “Let’s talk. I won't read your mind, if you don't mine. Deal?”He states, “Deal. Ladies first.”I ask, “How old are you?”He takes a sip of his drink before he speaks, “I was born in 1015, in what is now Brussels, Belgium.”“So, you're older than Prin
We finished packing and loaded everything up in my car. Vincent informed me he would have people get the rest of our things and list the apartment for sale. I tried arguing with him, but it was no use. I used our minds for that conversation, because I am still not sure how I will tell Katie the full truth. I have so many questions, but they will have to wait until Katie goes to sleep. Then maybe I will know how to tell her about all of this. I can’t keep this from her for long, not that I would want to anyway, but our safety depends on knowing as much as we can. It's still quite dark, but the sun will rise soon, as we pull up to Vincent's place. It is a gated, sprawling mansion located on several wooded acres. It's beautiful, but so extravagant. It's near sunrise … don't vampires turn to ash? Or does it have to be direct sunlight? I remember Eric saying something about it making them weaker, but how weak? Vincent just looks at me and shakes his head no. I need to learn more about vam
His smirk widens, “We aren't close with lovers, Eva. As we can have many, they come and go. We also have very few allies because many lust for power.”He's getting off on my agitation. “Then what?”He hesitated, “Eric was thinking Vicky could turn out to be his mate. It is why he chose to marry her so that he could be with her around humans. He was wrong.”He said, Mate! I ask, “Why?”He says, “He didn't share enough indicators with her. They never had the mind-link.”I tilt my head, “But he married her and let her close?”Vincent adds, “Yes, perhaps he was just tired of being lonely, and he didn't feel like she'd betray him. He hoped to grow to love her.”I'm trying to understand all of this, “Maybe not everyone has the ESP thing like me.”He says, “No, all vampires do, just most are very weak. But even weak ones have it with their…”He trailed off, so I insisted, “Their what? I'm doing my best not to pry it out of you!”He said softly, as his blue eyes flicked to mine, “Mates.”My e
This might be my chance to learn more about the mystery that is Vincent Black. So I decided to open up to him, “I do. I also think it's different for everyone. Some people love one person their whole lives, others never find it, and some love a few. There's also sibling and parental type love. I think we all need some type of love to truly live.”He asks, “Have you found it?”“The lasting kind, no, just familial with Katie. There was a guy that I loved once, but he's gone. Have you ever found it?” I ask.He sighs, “Once many centuries ago.”I can tell that he won't elaborate, so I steer the conversation, “I guess it's different for your kind.”He nods, “If you could become immortal, would you?”I think for a moment, “I suppose given the right circumstances, I would. It would be sad to watch those around me die, but if I helped them make that life worth living and filled with love, then it would be worth it.”He smiles as if I lifted a weight from his shoulders, “You're taking this who
We danced a bit and then got ready to leave. I tried to keep the physical contact to a minimum because I already felt a pull to these guys, and I didn't want to explore it…at least, not yet. Anytime that I had let a guy get close, it only ended in disaster. I am not sure that I am ready for such entanglements again. But there's just something about them, and I don't think it is because they are supernatural beings either. They're strangers, yet I feel almost like I'm home. Why do they feel like home?Sam goes to leave, “I'll text you about meeting my family.” His self-assuredness about all of this rubs off on me, making me smile, “Sounds good.” Honestly, it does, and that scares me. He kisses me on the cheek, and I feel this tingling rush that makes me giggle and blush. I am not the type of woman who is so easily flustered, but these guys make my head spin. I'm not used to this kind of attention either. I'm used to a different kind…a controlling kind. Any past relationship I have had
Their eyes go wide. I must have triggered a memory or something. They talk amongst themselves. Eric says, “Surely, not.”But Vincent adds, “However, it would make sense.”Sam responds, “Something like that would have to be forbidden and is well protected.”Eric thinks, “Maybe it's linked to one of the prophecies.” Vincent agrees with Eric.I scratch my head, “Okay, backup, since it looks like someone is trying to become the supreme ruler of the world, how can we keep humans like Katie safe?”Vincent offers, “She can stay at my place. You both can. There's plenty of room, too.”Sam suggests, “Or the pack house.”He's still trying to get me to meet his family. It's sweet, but, “Wouldn't that put your family at risk?” Eric and Vincent both agree. Sam looks dejected, and my heart feels for him. But why? I don't know these guys. Why do I feel for them? I have to ask, “How do I explain my moving to Katie?” They all just look at me. I roll my eyes. “Fine, I will think of something.” I think
