Vincent answers, “Yes. Why did you withdraw and change your tone?”

“Just a feeling, it could be nothing,” I say dismissively. I don't know Vincent, so I'm not sure how much I can or should say.

Katie chimes in, “Eva, you know to always trust your gut. So what's it saying?”

I just blurted out, “Well, it's saying to stay clear of one or both of them.”

Vincent touches my arm, “We must talk in private later.”

I turned to him, “I just met you and you think I'd go somewhere alone with you?”

He gives me a playful smirk, “Judge for yourself, Miss Sims. I mean you do no harm, and I'm pretty sure you can realize that, too.” We are to be seated, and there's an attractive gentleman at our table. He's in a dark blue suit and has long, light brown hair that's pulled back into a ponytail. A tight, well-groomed beard frames his ruggedly handsome face. His eyes are a steely blue-green, which pulls me in.

He stands and introduces himself, “I'm Sam Fall.” We all introduce ourselves.

Then Vincent says something that takes me by surprise, “No pack with you? It's rare to see you

attending without the others.” Pack? What pack? Is Sam not human either? I sense a tension between them, too, and I don't like it.

I have to ask, “Do you two know each other?”

Vincent says, “Somewhat, but not closely.”

Sam adds, “I know more about him than I know him. We only briefly encounter each other at

mixed functions like this one.” Mixed functions, just what does he mean by that? Just what have I gotten myself and Katie into?

I feel myself losing my filter and with it my decorum, “Well, let's keep the testosterone levels down, shall we? And be civil as well, please.”

“Eva!” Katie smacks my hand. We all share a laugh at my expense, but I don't care. I feel oddly at home right now.

I look around and then at Katie, “What? This has to be the oddest night of my life by far. What's next, talking animals and dancing fairies?”

Katie cocks her head, “What are you talking about?”

I decided not to elaborate, “Just nothing, I'm just getting ideas for my next article, is all.” Writing about the paranormal has made me hyperaware. I am convinced that humans aren't the superior species that they think they are. I think many myths and legends existed, and perhaps some still do. I might be sitting at the table with two such legends right now.

Katie giggles, “What's it going to be this time? A serial killer slaughter ball, or a romantic vampire masquerade?”

I smirk. She doesn't know how close she is. We are certainly in mixed company because we are some of the only humans here. The more I look around, the more my feelings from earlier intensify, so I am certain that I'm right.

Vincent asks, “Exactly what do you do, Eva?” He is studying me now, too. Has he read some of my articles?

Before I can answer him, the couple from before comes over. The man addresses me, “Miss Midnight Rose, I'm glad you could make it.”

He makes me nervous but not in a fearful way, “Umm, yeah. Who are you, and how'd you know it was me?”

“I'm Eric Wood, and this is my wife, Vicky.  I have eyes everywhere, Eva. I know you are Midnight Rose, and I am very glad you came.” I am almost positive that Eric is a vampire, and his wife seems familiar, too. I don't like her for some reason either. “Then why am I here? I'm not one of you or them. I'm in the minority here.”

He speaks very calmly and extremely dignified, “I need your impartiality and your journalistic ability. You know of my world, and it needs your help.”

I keep looking at him. He's pale with perfect pale skin. His eyes are a tantalizing teal. He's timelessly handsome. I cock my head, “For what?”

Vicky decides to speak, and I wish that she hadn't. “Ugh, why her? She's a moron. I don't get why you bother with food.” She's the epitome of a haughty pretentious bitch. I want to slap her, but I feel Vincent place his hand on mine, and I also feel Sam’s warm hand on my knee, as if to ground me. “We don't need her, Eric!” Vicky yelled. Oh no, she didn't! I glare at her and then envision myself strangling her. To my surprise, she grabs her throat and starts to drop to her knees as her face starts to change colors. I wonder if I can turn her into a rainbow.

He pats my arm. “I bet; growing up, thinking you're human, then suddenly learning you're not. Just that alone is nearly impossible to grasp.”I reply, “Just don't go poking around in my mind, it gets a bit crazy in there. Vincent and I are trying to control the link. I'm guessing you want me to write about something, thus, why you invited me to the Gala.”He nods, “My pull to you aside, yes, that's why I initially invited you to the Gala. There have been unauthorized feedings, among other things. I want you to write about the missing humans and those discovered, in addition to other specifics I tell you. Mention our true abilities, so vampires will pay attention. I am hoping some will come forward before Hunters get involved.”“So the murderers in the news are portrayed as a serial killer?” I ask. He nods. I smile, “Consider it done.” As I said that, my alarm went off. Eric joked that he didn't see me set it. I told him that's why I'm so good at my job. “I am going to put my hands on

Vincent comes over, “Eva!”I bite my lip, “You heard?”He nods, “I did. I'm not mad. She had it coming.” Eric stood in front of that vampiress. “Get Veronica out of here. She's had too much. To my office, both of you, please,” he said. So the chick who thought I was food is named Veronica. I will remember that. We walked into his office. It is very nice. He pours us a drink. I giggle because it looks like I drive these guys to drink. Eric shakes his head, “It's scotch; we are going to need this!”I go on the defensive, “She provoked me and tried to grab me!”He sighs, “We know.”I look at Eric, more confused than ever, “You mean Vincent told you?” They look at each other and then at me, “Don't even think … nor suggest! Not happening!”Eric smirks, “Prove me wrong.” I think, 'f*ck you'. They both answer out loud. Vincent says, “I’d love to, when you're ready.” Eric says, “Is that an invitation?”I huff as I throw my hands up, “For fucksake! Can't you just unlike me!”Eric chuckles,

  • Eternally Bound to My Mates   Night Moves

**We talk in our minds…**I think, “This is amazing.”I can feel him smiling as I hear his thought, “It's a way to travel quickly, but the view can be verylovely.” I turn my head and notice that he's looking at me. I giggle to myself, but as I do, I sense his smile widen, and I feel his hot breath against the back of my neck. We landed at a club called 'Nightly Tendencies'. I giggle as we continue to talk in our minds…“It's just for our kind,” he says, “but since you think it's so funny, what would you call a vampire club?”I don't have to think, “Night Moves or Eternal Bliss.”He smirks, “Yeah, those are better, but we probably shouldn't tell him that.”I gave him a look, “Why not? I'm not afraid of him.”He pinches the bridge of his nose, “Eva, seriously, show some restraint. You already ousted his wife.”I shrug, “She was rude and evil. She had it coming.”He rolls his eyes, “Just stay by my side.”I pout, “Fine, I'll be good.” We continue talking in our minds as we enter the cl

  • Eternally Bound to My Mates   Closer

We went inside, sat on the couch by the fireplace, and decided to enjoy a nice brandy. The more that I am around Vincent, the more I can see myself in him, and more importantly, with him. How can just a few hours seem as if we have spent decades together? “This is fairly good. I don't usually drink brandy, if I drink at all,” I say, to curb my wandering mind.He sighs as he takes a sip, “Thought it might relax you a bit after what happened in the woods.”The woods…yeah, the woods. He probably thinks I'm still confused about the abilities we explored, but that's not what has me nervous. It does a bit, but what terrifies me is how quickly things are progressing. I am not sure if I can fight this bond, and honestly, I'm not sure that I want to. But I can't just give in to what my body wants, can I?I sigh, “This is all surreal. I suppose it's easier to grasp the whole immortal thing because of books and movies, but where do truth and fiction meet?”He runs his fingers through his hair,

  • Eternally Bound to My Mates   Trust Me

I laugh, “Do you realize how silly that sounds? I'm in the woods, at night, in the company of apowerful vampire, and you're asking me if I trust you.”He raises his eyebrow, “Well, I was going to give you a massage, but now I'm rethinking it.”I giggle, “Well, don't trouble yourself too much.”He scoffs, “I swear I think the world hates me.”I grin as I laugh, “Or loves you; I'm pretty special.” I catch his thoughts without meaning to. He said to himself, 'Maybe you are more than you know.’ Our eyes lock. The space between us lessens, like there is an invisible cord tethering us together, both pulling us and binding us as one. I see the look of amazement in his eyes, and I know mine reflects the same. I can see myself in his eyes. His beautiful blue orbs seem to glow and sparkle. It's like nothing I've ever seen before. He touches my face, “Your eyes glow like peridot.”I smile, “Yours glow like someone put a lightbulb in the depths of the ocean.” We gaze at one another. He touches m

  • Eternally Bound to My Mates   The Walk

He takes my hand and leads me outside. Under the moonlight, we walk into the woods. It should be near morning, but the moon still lingers. We come to the bank of a secluded lake. The moon reflects on the water, lighting up the lily pads and their flowers. On the fragrant flowers are butterflies. It is extremely beautiful. It reminds me of the night I was sitting on a dock, dangling my feet in the water. This poem just infiltrated my mind, so I decided to share it with Vincent. “I go into the night. Seeking someone to hear my plight. I feel the world closing in around me. I leave behind the rest of humanity.I walk further into the night. Leaving everything behind to make me feel alright. I find myself heading out to the place where no one speaks. As I halt within the night, I scan the trees around me. I crouched down and felt the earth pulsing under my hand. There is a power here that I wish to understand. As I wait within the night, I send my senses outward. I feel the life
