Chapter 2

작가: Alyssa J
"Then how do you want me to show my sincerity? I'll agree to anything, all right?"

The corner of my mouth curved.

The fish had taken the hook.

I turned my head back.

Jack was looking at me with eyes full of pity, grievance, and humility.

In the past, seeing him like this would have softened me, and I'd have wanted to pluck the moon from the sky to give to him.

But I knew that what he wanted now was to save the bully who'd helped him grind my dignity into the dirt.

I couldn't feel a flicker of anything but disgust.

I stepped closer and said softly, "I only need you to do three things to prove you love me, and I won't marry the other man."

Jack nodded over and over, thrilled. "No problem, whatever you say, I'll do it."

I smiled and counted them off on my fingers one by one. "One, slap Vivian across the face twice in public. Two, burn your marriage certificate. Three, transfer the house into my name."

"That simple."

Jack was dumbstruck.

He'd probably assumed the three things I'd ask for would be some childish little routine: take me to a movie, buy me another bouquet, say "I love you."

But he didn't know.

I was no longer the naive, ignorant girl I'd once been.

His lips trembled as he asked, "You know I'm married?"

I shrugged and feigned a jealous edge. "Yeah, heard a classmate mention it. What, you weren't planning to make me your mistress before you'd even divorced, were you?"

He rushed to deny it. "How could I?"

I smiled. "Then a request this simple shouldn't be beyond you, should it?"

He was silent for a long while, then reached out, held my hand, and said earnestly, "For you, I can do anything. I don't want to lose you again."

He looked so devoted.

So devoted I almost believed the man who'd helped Vivian bully me back then was someone else entirely.

I followed Jack back to their house. Vivian had been laughing happily, but the moment she saw me her face went cold, and she demanded of Jack—

"What did you bring her here for?"

Every word dripped with her loathing of me, and yet she still needed my heart to keep herself alive. Disgusting.

I copied the way she used to taunt me, smiling sweet and smug. "Didn't Jack tell you? He's divorcing you."

Vivian had clearly known Jack's plan all along.

But she still put on an act of ignorance. "Don't talk nonsense. We're perfectly happy. Someone like you doesn't get to wreck that."

I stepped back, ceding the floor to Jack, and called all the neighbors over.

I said loudly, "Everyone, this is the woman who years ago tricked me into donating my marrow and then turned around and stole my boyfriend."

"Now he's said it himself, that he wants to settle the score for me, that he'll prove in front of all of you that his remorse is real. I'd ask you all to bear witness."

Backed into that corner, Jack went livid in an instant, his hands shaking.

He walked forward unsteadily and, in front of dozens of eyes, brought his palm down hard across Vivian's face.

Vivian was stunned, clutching her cheek, her eyes going red in an instant.

"Are you insane? You dared to hit me? You hit me for that bitch?"

She wouldn't let it go and lunged at him, clawing.

Jack gritted his teeth and swung again, and Vivian collapsed straight to the floor.

The two slaps delivered, he let out a breath like a weight had lifted.

But I calmly turned around, dug out their marriage certificate, pulled a lighter from my pocket, and tossed it into his hands.

I reminded him, "Aren't you forgetting something?"

Jack hesitated a few seconds, then set the marriage certificate on fire with the lighter.

Everyone froze. Only I was smiling.

Smiling so much that even Jack assumed I loved him so deeply, was so desperate for revenge on Vivian, that it made me this happy.

He had no idea I was smiling because the two of them were finished.

  • Every Night He Said He Loved Me in My Dreams   Chapter 8

The day I saw Jack again was the hundredth-day memorial for Vivian, and also the day of his trial.Ever since the truth came out online, Vivian had been pointed at behind her back every time she stepped out the door. The neighbors spat at her, and even the women at the market refused to sell her food.Everyone cursed her as a "cold-hearted" woman who would "harm the very person who saved her life."Just like the small, helpless me of long ago.Except I was an innocent victim, wronged and isolated, while they had it coming, and no one could save them. That taste of despair, they'd finally come to know it too. Before Vivian passed, I saw her one last time.I went back to the town and donated three hundred thousand dollars so the poor children there could go to school, and after that no one dared look down on my family again.I gave another million dollars to my parents and told them that from now on they were the family in this town who could stand the tallest.Never again would anyone b

I looked at Vivian and gave a small lift of my chin."See, your dear husband won't even pay your medical bills. In the end it was me, the rival you despise most, who covered three more months for you."Vivian flung her bag, which let out a shrill screech—"Jack, you heartless bastard, I'll fight you to the death!"Jack grabbed her by the hair, his face full of revulsion, and hit her like he meant to kill."You crazy hag, if it weren't for you, Nora and I would never have ended up like this! You should have died long ago!"Listening to them clawing and screaming and tearing at each other, I turned away with ease. All of this wasn't over yet.But I hadn't expected that Jack himself would make the final push, would shove himself into a dead end with his own hands. When I woke the next day.I'd received a gossip-news alert, headlined: "Bombshell! East Coast heir's daughter-in-law accused of two-timing; childhood sweetheart posts intimate photos and handwritten love letters!"I clicked in t

  • Every Night He Said He Loved Me in My Dreams   Chapter 6

Before any of this, I'd made my preparations thoroughly.I sold Vivian and his house off to a mob boss, leaving him with nowhere to live.Every day Jack not only had to cover Vivian's steep medical bills but also pay rent, until he couldn't even afford the cost of hypnotizing me.And of course.I wasn't going to keep playing along in the dreams anymore. My dreams finally went quiet. But Jack's dreams turned unbearable.Day and night he began to recall how good I'd once been to him, how I'd been willing to do anything for him, content to stand behind him and watch over him alone. And Vivian? After all their years together, he was still expected to give as an equal?Taking turns at the dishes, having to apologize first after a fight, having to discuss every expense...Now she lay in a hospital bed, and her rich father couldn't be bothered with her, thinking only of his new family, a healthy wife and daughter and a warm home. Her mother was the same. With a son being groomed at home to in

"Nora, what do you mean by this?""Didn't you agree to leave with me, to let me come for you?"I curved my lips and played dumb."When did I ever agree to that?""Was it a dream you had? Then you should crawl back under the covers and keep sleeping, not come throw a tantrum at my wedding."Laughter broke out across the room.Jack's mouth opened and closed, his face going purple, and it was a long time before he forced out a sentence—"Nora, are you planning to turn around and pretend you don't know me?"I shrugged and smiled, sweeping a glance over the guests."With this many people watching, how could I pretend not to know you? If you've got proof, then bring it out and show everyone."Then, smiling, I pressed a step closer."The thing is... do you?"A promise made in a dream, said out loud, would only make people take him for a fool.He had no one to blame but himself for setting such a stupid trap.In the end it could only ensnare the one who set it.Jack pointed at me, his finger s

The string of figures on the screen was more money than she and Jack could earn in most of a lifetime, and it was the lifelong goal of that small-town man, so arrogant and so insecure, always reaching beyond his grasp.I leaned close to her ear and murmured."I just feel sorry for you, that even now you still can't see your husband doesn't love you one bit.""What do you think you can hold him with? That failing heart of yours, or those pathetic savings?""He's got a chance to live the good life with me now. You really think he'd choose you, a dead weight?"Vivian's lips trembled for a long moment, until finally she shrieked, breaking down."You're lying! He could never abandon me!""He's the one who wants to find a hypnotist to kill you, to cut out your heart and use it to keep me alive. He couldn't possibly love you!""You're nothing but a walking organ bank. Your whole life, you'll never measure up to me!"And just then. The door opened and Jack came in, his whole face glowing green

  • Every Night He Said He Loved Me in My Dreams   Chapter 3

Vivian threw herself forward, completely losing control. "Jack, I've been so good to you, and you'd really divorce me for this woman?"Ha.Hadn't I once begged him just as wretchedly not to leave, crying even harder than she was?Back then she'd only spared me a glance and said, looking down from on high, "Tsk, you look just like a stray dog, all pitiful like that. Too bad our Jack doesn't like keeping mutts. Says they're filthy."She'd never imagined that one day she'd be crying harder than I ever did.In the end, Vivian sobbed until she fainted on the spot, her heart gave out, and Jack made an emergency call and rushed her to the hospital. He tried to climb into the ambulance, but I caught his wrist and wouldn't let him go.He started to panic. "Nora, don't pick this exact moment to get jealous. Saving her comes first!"I couldn't be bothered to answer him.Once he'd calmed down, as if afraid I'd be angry, he hurried to add, "If you ended up charged with manslaughter, it would break
