Chapter 1

Author: Alyssa J
Tonight, in the dream, I forgave Jack.

The next morning, that black profile picture that hadn't lit up in ages messaged me, asking me out to dinner.

The last time Jack texted me, it had been this:

"Sorry, but it was truth or dare and I drew 'confess to the dorkiest, dumbest girl in class and date her for a day,' so I picked you. Don't take it seriously. Vivian's the one I've always wanted."

I'd just stared at it.

Before I could even hand over the gift I'd bought for our date, Vivian's message had come popping in too.

"You actually thought Jack would want you? The girl at the very bottom of the class? Go look in a mirror."

"Jack and I are leaving for New York together for school. Someone like you would be lucky to get into a community college. From now on, do us a favor and don't tell people we're from the same town. It's humiliating."

But the only reason I was at the bottom of the class was that, the year we were in high school, she got leukemia.

Her mother went weeping from one end of town to the other, dropping to her knees in front of anyone she met, begging people to save her daughter.

The whole town got tested. I was the only match.

To save this so-called best friend of mine, I took half a year off school. There was marrow drawn from my bones, medication, test after test. I lay in a hospital bed enduring suffering I never should have had to bear.

I finally pulled her through it, and my own grades fell off a cliff. I couldn't keep up with the coursework.

Her parents spent every cent they had on private tutors from elite schools. For me, they dropped off two cartons of eggs at my house, called the matter settled, and never set foot on our doorstep again.

Maybe that was the moment I should have understood.

In their eyes, my life was worth two cartons of eggs. The kind about to go bad.

The thought made my nails dig into the flesh of my palm until I could barely breathe.

I composed myself, put on a red slip dress I never would have worn back in my school days, had my hair done in big waves, and went to meet him with my makeup immaculate.

He'd booked the restaurant right near our old high school.

Jack wore a black suit, tall and lean, barely changed from his younger self. If he hadn't told me, I never would have guessed he'd been married a year.

The first instant he saw me, he froze, and then jealousy and resentment flickered through his eyes.

"Nora, looks like he treats you pretty well."

I let a mocking smile pull at my lips and said, deliberately, "He's all right. If I can't have love, money's not a bad trade."

At dinner, Jack had never once been this attentive to me. He kept asking which dish I wanted, and the second I so much as coughed he'd hand me water.

I looked at him and said, in a joking tone, "Mr. Harris, all this kindness for no reason. Are you after my kidney, or my liver?"

His chopsticks jerked. He seemed to steady his nerves before he spoke slowly.

"Nora, I regret it. I regret not cherishing you back then."

"Watching you with someone else now, it really tears me up."

"It was all Vivian deceiving me back then. I see her clearly now. So let me ask you, in all seriousness, can we start over?"

I forced down the churning in my stomach, stared into those earnest eyes of his, and curved my lips. "And how would you prove to me that you're sincere?"

He hesitated, then said, as if it were obvious, "I brought you out to dinner today. Isn't that enough?"

How funny.

Did he still think I was the fool he could win back by tossing down a bowl of cold leftovers from on high?

I shook my head. "Jack, there's nothing I lack now. Are you treating me like an idiot?"

"If that's all the sincerity you've got, then let's just forget it."

I turned to leave, and a hand suddenly seized my wrist.

The day I saw Jack again was the hundredth-day memorial for Vivian, and also the day of his trial.Ever since the truth came out online, Vivian had been pointed at behind her back every time she stepped out the door. The neighbors spat at her, and even the women at the market refused to sell her food.Everyone cursed her as a "cold-hearted" woman who would "harm the very person who saved her life."Just like the small, helpless me of long ago.Except I was an innocent victim, wronged and isolated, while they had it coming, and no one could save them. That taste of despair, they'd finally come to know it too. Before Vivian passed, I saw her one last time.I went back to the town and donated three hundred thousand dollars so the poor children there could go to school, and after that no one dared look down on my family again.I gave another million dollars to my parents and told them that from now on they were the family in this town who could stand the tallest.Never again would anyone b

I looked at Vivian and gave a small lift of my chin."See, your dear husband won't even pay your medical bills. In the end it was me, the rival you despise most, who covered three more months for you."Vivian flung her bag, which let out a shrill screech—"Jack, you heartless bastard, I'll fight you to the death!"Jack grabbed her by the hair, his face full of revulsion, and hit her like he meant to kill."You crazy hag, if it weren't for you, Nora and I would never have ended up like this! You should have died long ago!"Listening to them clawing and screaming and tearing at each other, I turned away with ease. All of this wasn't over yet.But I hadn't expected that Jack himself would make the final push, would shove himself into a dead end with his own hands. When I woke the next day.I'd received a gossip-news alert, headlined: "Bombshell! East Coast heir's daughter-in-law accused of two-timing; childhood sweetheart posts intimate photos and handwritten love letters!"I clicked in t

Before any of this, I'd made my preparations thoroughly.I sold Vivian and his house off to a mob boss, leaving him with nowhere to live.Every day Jack not only had to cover Vivian's steep medical bills but also pay rent, until he couldn't even afford the cost of hypnotizing me.And of course.I wasn't going to keep playing along in the dreams anymore. My dreams finally went quiet. But Jack's dreams turned unbearable.Day and night he began to recall how good I'd once been to him, how I'd been willing to do anything for him, content to stand behind him and watch over him alone. And Vivian? After all their years together, he was still expected to give as an equal?Taking turns at the dishes, having to apologize first after a fight, having to discuss every expense...Now she lay in a hospital bed, and her rich father couldn't be bothered with her, thinking only of his new family, a healthy wife and daughter and a warm home. Her mother was the same. With a son being groomed at home to in

"Nora, what do you mean by this?""Didn't you agree to leave with me, to let me come for you?"I curved my lips and played dumb."When did I ever agree to that?""Was it a dream you had? Then you should crawl back under the covers and keep sleeping, not come throw a tantrum at my wedding."Laughter broke out across the room.Jack's mouth opened and closed, his face going purple, and it was a long time before he forced out a sentence—"Nora, are you planning to turn around and pretend you don't know me?"I shrugged and smiled, sweeping a glance over the guests."With this many people watching, how could I pretend not to know you? If you've got proof, then bring it out and show everyone."Then, smiling, I pressed a step closer."The thing is... do you?"A promise made in a dream, said out loud, would only make people take him for a fool.He had no one to blame but himself for setting such a stupid trap.In the end it could only ensnare the one who set it.Jack pointed at me, his finger s

The string of figures on the screen was more money than she and Jack could earn in most of a lifetime, and it was the lifelong goal of that small-town man, so arrogant and so insecure, always reaching beyond his grasp.I leaned close to her ear and murmured."I just feel sorry for you, that even now you still can't see your husband doesn't love you one bit.""What do you think you can hold him with? That failing heart of yours, or those pathetic savings?""He's got a chance to live the good life with me now. You really think he'd choose you, a dead weight?"Vivian's lips trembled for a long moment, until finally she shrieked, breaking down."You're lying! He could never abandon me!""He's the one who wants to find a hypnotist to kill you, to cut out your heart and use it to keep me alive. He couldn't possibly love you!""You're nothing but a walking organ bank. Your whole life, you'll never measure up to me!"And just then. The door opened and Jack came in, his whole face glowing green

Vivian threw herself forward, completely losing control. "Jack, I've been so good to you, and you'd really divorce me for this woman?"Ha.Hadn't I once begged him just as wretchedly not to leave, crying even harder than she was?Back then she'd only spared me a glance and said, looking down from on high, "Tsk, you look just like a stray dog, all pitiful like that. Too bad our Jack doesn't like keeping mutts. Says they're filthy."She'd never imagined that one day she'd be crying harder than I ever did.In the end, Vivian sobbed until she fainted on the spot, her heart gave out, and Jack made an emergency call and rushed her to the hospital. He tried to climb into the ambulance, but I caught his wrist and wouldn't let him go.He started to panic. "Nora, don't pick this exact moment to get jealous. Saving her comes first!"I couldn't be bothered to answer him.Once he'd calmed down, as if afraid I'd be angry, he hurried to add, "If you ended up charged with manslaughter, it would break
