Chapter 2

Author: Arctic Islands
When Damon finally got me to agree, his expression relaxed. As usual, he reached over and ruffled the top of my head.

"All right. We're going to a gathering with friends tonight. We already agreed we'd go together. Hurry up and change. We're running out of time."

Kendra seemed to remember something just then. She quickly pulled out a dress and handed it to me. "Damon specifically bought this for you. Try it on. We'll wait for you downstairs."

It was the latest design from a brand I'd talked about for ages but never brought myself to buy.

But the label at the neckline was Kendra's size: S. It was obvious she'd already worn it once.

I tossed the dress onto the sofa. It felt as though a heavy stone had settled on my chest, making it hard to breathe.

Right on cue, my phone buzzed twice.

It was Damon.

[Are you coming down?]

I'd just tapped the message box when another message popped up before I could reply.

[Bring Kendra a jacket. It's windy and a little cold tonight.]

He wasn't asking why I hadn't come downstairs. He just wanted me to bring Kendra a jacket.

I stopped and looked out the window. Damon's car was still parked by the curb.

Kendra sat in the passenger seat, tilting her head back to drink from the matching couple's tumbler I'd bought for him.

It wasn't just the tumbler. In the half month since Kendra had moved in, she'd started wearing Damon's slippers, saying the extra room made them really comfortable.

She'd also slip into his white dress shirts, claiming men's clothes were made from softer fabric and that the oversized fit made them perfect pajamas.

Since they worked at the same company, they naturally started commuting together every day. Even the passenger seat had become her exclusive spot.

And Damon had never once refused her any of it.

At first, I hadn't thought anything of it. They'd known each other longer than I'd known him.

Kendra had even helped bring Damon and me together in the first place. She'd played matchmaker when he pursued me, and she'd helped us reconcile through every breakup and reunion over the past five years.

If there had been anything between them, I would never have stood a chance.

But now, I could finally see it clearly. They'd crossed the line a long time ago.

Just then, a message came in from the police station.

[Ms. Valentine, we still need you to come in and assist with the investigation into the incident you reported two days ago.]

I took a deep breath and finally approached the car.

When Kendra saw me, she pretended to unfasten her seat belt. "Sorry, Meredith. I've gotten so used to sitting here lately. You can take my seat."

Damon noticed that I hadn't changed into the dress or brought a jacket. His face darkened with displeasure.

He reached over and pulled Kendra right back into her seat. "Forget changing. There's no time for all that now."

I didn't say anything and simply walked away.

Damon froze for a moment, then stepped on the gas and pulled his car directly in front of me, blocking my path.

He got out and grabbed my arm. "Meredith, what are you throwing a fit about now?"

"I'm not throwing a fit. We're just going in different directions."

He let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"You're going to the gathering. I'm going to the police station. We're not going the same way."

He stared at me for two seconds. When he realized I wasn't just sulking, a hint of unease finally crept into his expression. "Why are you going there?"

I looked toward Kendra in the passenger seat.

Two nights ago, I had been working overtime when my supervisor sexually harassed me at the office.

After finally managing to get away, I called Damon in tears, begging him to come pick me up.

I hadn't even finished explaining when he cut me off. "Kendra got drunk at a business dinner. I'll pick her up first, then come get you."

But even after the police finished collecting evidence at the scene and taking my statement, Damon never showed up.

The memory of that night still pierced me like a needle.

I didn't want to say anything more. "It's nothing."

Damon frowned, about to question me further, when Kendra suddenly leaned out of the car with an apologetic expression.

"Clark's already called several times to ask where we are. If we're late again tonight, I'm probably going to get pressured into drinking all over again."

The hesitation in Damon's eyes disappeared. He gave me a brief explanation. "I'll drop her off first, then come find you."

The car sped away.

Standing beneath the streetlight, I smiled, unsurprised.

On my way to the police station, I took out my phone and sent my company a resignation letter as well.

[I'm not dropping the case. I'm not the one who did anything wrong.]

After I left, Damon never showed up at the hospital again. I assumed he'd moved on.It wasn't until a month later, when Mom was discharged and came home, that I learned he'd rented the house directly across the street from ours.Every month, he'd travel across state lines to stay there for two days.Sometimes, when I went out for a walk with my parents, I'd see him standing by his window, silently watching me. I acted as though I hadn't seen him.Brett's case was also closed a month later. He was sentenced to five years in prison. On my birthday, a text from an unfamiliar number popped up on my phone.[Happy birthday, Meredith.]I knew it was Damon. When I got home that day, there was a cake waiting by the front door. It was my favorite kind. For all five years we'd been together, he'd been by my side on every birthday, but this time, I didn't need him beside me anymore. I threw the cake into the trash. Then I lit the candles on the princess cake Yohan had made for me. The fr

I never expected Damon to follow me to the hospital.Yohan stepped in front of me, shielding me with his body. He shouted furiously at Damon, "You've got some nerve showing your face here! Damon, you son of a witch!"As he spoke, Yohan swung his fist straight into Damon's face.I thought Damon would dodge, but from beginning to end, he stood there in silence, doing nothing. He let Yohan hit him again and again.Only after Yohan had worn himself out did Damon stagger to his feet. He raised a hand and wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. His gaze remained fixed on me."Meredith..."I didn't want to disturb the other patients, and I didn't want him to wake Mom in her hospital room. When I'd rushed back on the day of the holiday, the doctors had said she was out of danger, but she still needed plenty of rest.Damon followed me outside the hospital to the flower beds.I looked at him coldly, keeping several feet between us. "What do you want?"He looked utterly exhausted.

Kendra was still in the living room, sorting through the things she'd brought home from her parents' place. When she saw Damon come out, she assumed he'd finally come around. She hurried over and slipped her arm through his."Damon, what should we have for dinner? Remember how much you liked these sausages? My mom packed a whole bunch for us..."But no matter what she said, Damon's expression remained dark.Kendra felt embarrassed. An inexplicable sense of dread began to creep over her. "Damon, what's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that...?"Damon stared at the woman in front of him. He'd known Kendra even longer than he'd known Meredith. They'd been together through high school, college, and graduation. He'd thought he knew her well enough, but only today had he realized how wrong he'd been."Can you explain what those emails are about?"A flicker of unease crossed Kendra's eyes. "Damon, what are you talking about? Those emails were sent by Meredith. How would I know an

At the bottom of Brett's statement were screenshots of several emails. The contents were so suggestive that, if Damon hadn't seen them with his own eyes, he would never have believed they had anything to do with Meredith. But the email address bore her name. He was absolutely certain of that.Damon felt thrown into confusion.Kendra sat beside him, looking disappointed. "I never thought Meredith was that kind of person...""Damon, she's really gone too far this time. How could she be with you while accepting advances from another man?"As she spoke, Kendra studied his expression. "Everyone online is saying she was playing hard to get and only filed a police report because things fell apart with Brett...""Shut up!" Damon roared, cutting her off. "Meredith isn't that kind of person."Kendra stared at him in disbelief. It was the first time Damon had ever raised his voice at her like that. A flicker of something unreadable crossed her eyes. When she spoke again, her voice was ti

Damon's hands trembled as he opened the video and watched it over and over.He couldn't believe the person being discussed was me. He couldn't believe that something so serious had happened to me and that I'd kept it from him.In his mind, I would always be the girl who came to him to complain and cry whenever her supervisor criticized her.His body stiffened as he looked at the receptionist, who was watching the drama unfold with undisguised interest.Even his voice shook when he spoke, "When... when did this happen?""It happened before Thanksgiving. I think it was the night of the twenty-second."The twenty-second...Damon furrowed his brow, trying to remember.Fragments of details and moments he'd barely noticed began resurfacing in his mind. After leaving the private room, I didn't go home.Instead, I spent the night at a nearby hotel. I couldn't bear to spend another minute in the home I'd shared with Damon for five years. And he didn't send me a single message all night. The next morning, after checking out, I planned to go back, pack my things, and head home. But just before I entered the house, Yohan suddenly called. "Meredith, Mom's heart condition has flared up again. You need to come home right away..."My breath caught. I rushed inside.I walked straight into Damon, who was carrying Kendra's suitcase and preparing to leave. When he saw me, he seemed relieved. As if yesterday's events were already behind us, he casually explained, "Meredith, you're back just in time. Kendra couldn't get a ticket home, so I'm not going back with you this time."I couldn't worry about anything else. I stepped forward and grabbed his hand.My voice trembled.
