Damon Compton sighed. "I'll just go buy them again."

Kendra Dougherty quickly shook her head, looking almost embarrassed to ask for anything. "Don't go to all that trouble. Cookies from anywhere are fine."

But Damon had already grabbed his car keys and headed out.

I stared blankly at his retreating figure.

The bakery was an hour away by subway, and with the holiday approaching, traffic would only be worse.

When I'd asked him earlier if he could take me there, he'd complained that it was too much trouble and said there was no need to go so far.

Just then, a vibration from our group chat interrupted my thoughts.

Kendra sent him a reminder: [You're passing the cafe on your way back, right? Could you pick up two drinks for me and Meredith while you're at it?]

Damon replied almost immediately: [What do you two want?]

[Anything is fine.]

Damon replied: [Okay.]

It wasn't until an hour later that he realized I still hadn't answered.

[@Meredith Valentine, stop overthinking it and hurry up. Tell me already.]

I scrolled up, copied Kendra's reply, "Anything is fine," and pasted it into the chat.

No one said another word.

I looked at Kendra sitting on the couch. Half a month ago, she'd said her lease was up and asked to stay with us for a few days to make her commute easier.

But the days had dragged on, and there was still no sign of the new place she'd supposedly found.

When Damon returned, Kendra's excited voice nearly pierced my eardrums.

"How did you know I wanted this one? It even comes with a collaboration and exclusive merchandise!"

I looked at the coffee in her hand and the limited-edition collaboration fridge magnet. All I'd gotten was an iced tea from a buy-one-get-one deal.

I didn't take it.

Damon frowned without meaning to. "What's wrong now?"

"You forgot? I just had surgery. I can't drink anything cold right now."

His expression faltered. "You didn't make that clear."

I opened our group chat and scrolled between my reply and Kendra's, showing him the messages. "She didn't say what she wanted either."

He stared at me for two seconds, then suddenly laughed. "Are you upset over something this small? If you want one, I'll get it for you tomorrow. Next time, just specify exactly what you want."

When Kendra said the same thing, he could decipher her meaning in a second and anticipate her every need. With me, he couldn't even be bothered to ask or guess.

Damon reached for my hand. "All right. I bought the cookies for your parents, too."

I picked up one of the boxes of molten chocolate lava cookies. They were my mother's favorite.

When I'd gone shopping earlier, the shelves for that brand had already been cleared out. I'd even complained to Damon about it while we were checking out.

I hadn't expected him to remember.

I took a deep breath.

I was just about to ask what time we were leaving for home tomorrow. We'd agreed that while we were back, we'd discuss the wedding date.

But Kendra eagerly leaned over, eyeing the gift boxes with an indecisive expression. "You bought eight different flavors! How am I supposed to choose?"

My heart tightened.

Before I could react, Damon had already reached for the cookies. "If you like them, just take them all. Besides, your family has so many relatives and friends. They'll come in handy."

I stared at him in disbelief. "Weren't those for my parents?"

"Your parents aren't picky. Three boxes of salted caramel cookies will be enough."

A sharp ache rose in my throat.

Last year, I'd picked out cookie gift boxes for Thanksgiving, only to discover after I got home that Damon had switched them and given them to Kendra instead.

His excuse had been exactly the same. "Stop making such a big deal out of everything. It's not like your parents can tell the difference anyway."

What he didn't know was that the cheap, unregulated products Kendra had bought had left my parents vomiting for three days.

If my younger brother, Yohan Valentine, hadn't gone out of his way to tell me a couple of days ago, I never would have known.

When I refused to let go of the boxes, Damon pulled harder. His voice grew impatient. "It's just a box of cookies. Is it really worth fighting over?"

The handles dug into my palm until the skin turned red.

I let go, then smiled along with him. "It isn't worth it."

A relationship like this wasn't worth it.

After I left, Damon never showed up at the hospital again. I assumed he'd moved on.It wasn't until a month later, when Mom was discharged and came home, that I learned he'd rented the house directly across the street from ours.Every month, he'd travel across state lines to stay there for two days.Sometimes, when I went out for a walk with my parents, I'd see him standing by his window, silently watching me. I acted as though I hadn't seen him.Brett's case was also closed a month later. He was sentenced to five years in prison. On my birthday, a text from an unfamiliar number popped up on my phone.[Happy birthday, Meredith.]I knew it was Damon. When I got home that day, there was a cake waiting by the front door. It was my favorite kind. For all five years we'd been together, he'd been by my side on every birthday, but this time, I didn't need him beside me anymore. I threw the cake into the trash. Then I lit the candles on the princess cake Yohan had made for me. The fr

I never expected Damon to follow me to the hospital.Yohan stepped in front of me, shielding me with his body. He shouted furiously at Damon, "You've got some nerve showing your face here! Damon, you son of a witch!"As he spoke, Yohan swung his fist straight into Damon's face.I thought Damon would dodge, but from beginning to end, he stood there in silence, doing nothing. He let Yohan hit him again and again.Only after Yohan had worn himself out did Damon stagger to his feet. He raised a hand and wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. His gaze remained fixed on me."Meredith..."I didn't want to disturb the other patients, and I didn't want him to wake Mom in her hospital room. When I'd rushed back on the day of the holiday, the doctors had said she was out of danger, but she still needed plenty of rest.Damon followed me outside the hospital to the flower beds.I looked at him coldly, keeping several feet between us. "What do you want?"He looked utterly exhausted.

Kendra was still in the living room, sorting through the things she'd brought home from her parents' place. When she saw Damon come out, she assumed he'd finally come around. She hurried over and slipped her arm through his."Damon, what should we have for dinner? Remember how much you liked these sausages? My mom packed a whole bunch for us..."But no matter what she said, Damon's expression remained dark.Kendra felt embarrassed. An inexplicable sense of dread began to creep over her. "Damon, what's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that...?"Damon stared at the woman in front of him. He'd known Kendra even longer than he'd known Meredith. They'd been together through high school, college, and graduation. He'd thought he knew her well enough, but only today had he realized how wrong he'd been."Can you explain what those emails are about?"A flicker of unease crossed Kendra's eyes. "Damon, what are you talking about? Those emails were sent by Meredith. How would I know an

At the bottom of Brett's statement were screenshots of several emails. The contents were so suggestive that, if Damon hadn't seen them with his own eyes, he would never have believed they had anything to do with Meredith. But the email address bore her name. He was absolutely certain of that.Damon felt thrown into confusion.Kendra sat beside him, looking disappointed. "I never thought Meredith was that kind of person...""Damon, she's really gone too far this time. How could she be with you while accepting advances from another man?"As she spoke, Kendra studied his expression. "Everyone online is saying she was playing hard to get and only filed a police report because things fell apart with Brett...""Shut up!" Damon roared, cutting her off. "Meredith isn't that kind of person."Kendra stared at him in disbelief. It was the first time Damon had ever raised his voice at her like that. A flicker of something unreadable crossed her eyes. When she spoke again, her voice was ti

Damon's hands trembled as he opened the video and watched it over and over.He couldn't believe the person being discussed was me. He couldn't believe that something so serious had happened to me and that I'd kept it from him.In his mind, I would always be the girl who came to him to complain and cry whenever her supervisor criticized her.His body stiffened as he looked at the receptionist, who was watching the drama unfold with undisguised interest.Even his voice shook when he spoke, "When... when did this happen?""It happened before Thanksgiving. I think it was the night of the twenty-second."The twenty-second...Damon furrowed his brow, trying to remember.Fragments of details and moments he'd barely noticed began resurfacing in his mind. It was the night Kendra attended her class reunion.During that phone call he abruptly cut short, I was crying desperately, terrified and helpless. I begged him to come pick me up from work. But at the time, he didn't have the patien

After leaving the private room, I didn't go home.Instead, I spent the night at a nearby hotel. I couldn't bear to spend another minute in the home I'd shared with Damon for five years. And he didn't send me a single message all night. The next morning, after checking out, I planned to go back, pack my things, and head home. But just before I entered the house, Yohan suddenly called. "Meredith, Mom's heart condition has flared up again. You need to come home right away..."My breath caught. I rushed inside.I walked straight into Damon, who was carrying Kendra's suitcase and preparing to leave. When he saw me, he seemed relieved. As if yesterday's events were already behind us, he casually explained, "Meredith, you're back just in time. Kendra couldn't get a ticket home, so I'm not going back with you this time."I couldn't worry about anything else. I stepped forward and grabbed his hand.My voice trembled. "My mom's in the hospital... Can you drive me home?"The earliest fl
