Chapter 1

Emily said I always held back—that I was too boring for Julian and he needed more excitement in his life. So she invited me to Hudson Pier.

The place where my family had been slaughtered. The place where Julian had risked his life to save mine.

10 years ago, I was the spoiled heiress of the mob. Then Rafael, the Don of a rival family, decided he wanted to marry me—and he wouldn't take no for an answer.

My three brothers were furious. They wanted him dead.

None of us knew that Rafael was the illegitimate son of the Sorels, the most powerful drug family in the world. His father wasn't about to let anyone threaten his son. He lured my family to Hudson Pier with a billion-dollar deal, then had them all killed.

A bullet grazed my hair on its way toward my forehead. At the last second, someone shoved me off the dock.

When I woke up, my father, my mother, and my three brothers were dead. The family members who had once followed me everywhere had vanished without a trace by morning.

I couldn't even blame them. Everyone was terrified of the Sorels.

I'd already decided to join my family in death. But despite his family's objections, Julian came to me and promised to protect me forever and stay by my side as I grew stronger.

Now I was strong, and he was the one who was sick. I owed it to him to do what he'd once done for me.

So I accepted Emily's invitation and returned to the place where my nightmare began.

Hudson Pier was once beautiful. Now it was nothing but a filthy, crumbling ruin.

The pier had once belonged to my family. After the massacre, everyone treated it like cursed ground. For years, even I couldn't bring myself to return.

But if returning could help Julian find his way back to himself, I could face it.

I pushed through the cobwebs with my bare hands and followed the dusty, gold-trimmed walkway toward the main hall. As I crossed the threshold, my foot caught on something, and I fell onto a deck smeared with excrement.

I'd thought about this place every day for 10 years. I knew every crack in every tile by heart. There was no way I'd simply tripped.

I got to my feet and examined the entrance. Sure enough, someone had raised the stone threshold on purpose.

"Who's there? Come out!" I drew my gun and swept it across the room.

"Jumpy, aren't you? Guess that's what happens when a woman gets old!"

Emily descended the stairs in black stockings and heels, a smug look on her face. The sweet young doctor from the hospital was gone. Now she looked like the kind of high-end escort you would see at an exclusive nightclub.

I scoffed. Julian's alternate personality had to be incredibly naive to fall for such a cheap act.

Fine. I'd clean up his mess for him. I slapped Emily hard enough to knock her down. But before I could do anything else, the cold muzzle of a gun pressed against the back of my neck.

"On your knees! Apologize to Emily!"

I knew that voice. I turned in disbelief and saw Julian glaring at me with pure hatred.

This was a man who had once valued my life above his own. How could his alternate personality hate me this much?

I fought back my tears and kept my voice gentle. "Julian, don't let her fool you."

I never got to finish. A slap sent me crashing back into the reeking filth.

"Apologize to Emily right now, or forget about ever seeing your precious real Julian again!" he screamed like a madman. The despair I'd felt 10 years ago, when the whole world abandoned me, came rushing back.

Then I remembered something. I wasn't that helpless little girl anymore.

"Then I won't see him. Thank you for saving me back then. You helped me survive, and I've repaid that debt many times over with everything I've built since."

Ignoring the pain, I pushed myself up, stripped off my filthy cashmere coat, and dropped it on the floor. Then I straightened my back.

"We're even now. Julian, you're on your own."

Julian's eyes widened, then slowly reddened.

I ignored him and walked away. A soft, broken whimper came from behind me.

"Caroline, you can't mean that. How could you throw me away?!"

His whole body shook, his face slick with tears and cold sweat. He looked exactly as he had 10 years ago, when I'd tried to kill myself.

Had I somehow shocked the real Julian back to the surface?

Rafael stuck a finger in his ear, clearly annoyed. One of his men immediately drew a knife and forced Julian's mouth open, ready to cut out his tongue. Emily fainted on the spot.Julian finally saw what a real crime boss looked like. He burst into tears and begged me. "Caroline! I was wrong! I'm sorry! I know I messed up! But I risked my life to save you 10 years ago. Please let me go! I'm the man who saved your life."I'd heard that line for 10 years. I was sick of it. I pushed myself to my feet, ready to tear into him. But Rafael, who rarely lost his cool, reacted first. "What did you say?"He grabbed Julian and hauled him off the floor. "I'm the one who pushed Caroline out of the line of fire 10 years ago. I'm the one who pulled her to shore. So how exactly did you become the man who saved her life?"His words hit me like a bolt of lightning, and I collapsed to the floor. "Rafael, are you serious?"Rafael smiled, but there was no warmth in his eyes. "Baby, that was my father's killi

Emily began to tremble and backed away. "No, I don't need it."I stepped closer. "I'm only returning your kindness. You wouldn't refuse a gift from me, would you?"Emily burst into tears, shaking with fear, and immediately put a hand over her stomach. "Caroline, you know I'm carrying Julian's baby, and you're still trying to force this on me. You might as well kill me yourself!"Just like that, Julian forgot his anger. He pulled Emily behind him and glared at me. "Emily injected you with that nutrient solution because she was trying to help you! Why are you still going after her?"I laughed. "You really believe it's a nutrient solution? Fine. Then you drink it."I held the vial out to Julian. He hesitated for two seconds. "Fine. As long as you promise to leave Emily alone, I'll drink it!"Julian took the vial and raised it to his lips. Before he could drink, Emily panicked and slapped it from his hand. "No! Julian, how do you know she didn't switch what's in it? I won't let you risk yo

Julian turned on Emily, his face twisted with fury. "Talk. What the hell is going on? What did you do to Caroline?"Tears streamed down Emily's face. "Nothing! Julian, Layla forced me into all of this! I swear I don't know anything about it."The commotion quickly drew a crowd, and several people were already livestreaming. Emily seized the opening. She placed a hand over her stomach and went straight for Julian's weak spot."Julian, I know Caroline hates me and will never let me go. But if even you don't believe me, I have no choice but to die with our baby."And just like that, Julian fell for it again. His anger vanished. He put away his gun and knelt in front of me. "Caroline, I know you've always had a temper. You want me all to yourself, and you can't stand anyone coming between us. You've already sent your best friend to prison. Are you really going to destroy an innocent woman and her unborn child too?"Just like that, he'd turned me into the villain. People online were already

Julian clearly hadn't expected me to appear right then. Guilt made him unusually eager to please. He yanked off his loosened tie, used it to wipe down the CEO's chair, and quickly ushered me into it. He clearly assumed I was there to accept Emily's apology.I played along and sat down. Emily obediently brought me a cup of coffee. "Caroline, thank you for accepting me. I promise I'll do my best. I won't disappoint you."I gave her a pleasant smile, accepted the coffee, and took a sip. Then I coughed up a mouthful of blood and spat it in her face.Emily stared at me in horror, wiping away the blood. "W-what is this?"I smiled. "Your karma."Emily froze, then immediately burst into tears. "No! This has nothing to do with me! I don't know anything about it!"Julian started toward her, ready to comfort her. Before he could reach her, I clutched my chest and collapsed. Julian spun around and caught me."Caroline, what's wrong?"I coughed through my tears. "I don't know. I've been like this s

I turned on the intercom. "Sorry, Layla. I'm busy preparing a candlelit dinner for Julian and Emily. The three of us are going to live together from now on, so I don't have time for visitors."Layla staggered back, looking like she might faint. "What? Caroline, have you lost your mind? You're the proudest woman I know! You couldn't even stand it when Julian took his own mother shopping. How can you let that bitch move into your house?"I shrugged. "His mother wanted to break us up. Emily doesn't. She only wants to be part of our relationship. Besides, she's sacrificed so much for Julian. She deserves a chance."Layla stomped her foot and muttered under her breath. "I'm the one who's spent 10 years quietly sacrificing everything for Julian! Not that bitch!"She looked ready to tear Emily apart. I laughed, switched off the intercom, and watched through the window as she stormed back to her car, cursing the whole way. She was clearly heading straight for Emily.Good. Julian and Emily coul

I thought the poison was making me hallucinate, so I reached out and poked Rafael on the nose. He smiled faintly. His warm breath brushed my fingertip, snapping me back to reality. It really was him. The man who had wiped out my family 10 years ago had come looking for me again.I forced myself to stop shaking. I'm dying. What do I have left to fear?"What do you want?" I dropped the grocery bags, drew my gun, and pressed it against his throat."Weren't you the one who called and invited me over?" He caught my wrist and twisted it. Before I knew it, my back was pressed to his chest and my gun was under my chin. "Caroline, I've spent 10 years fighting the urge to make you mine. I gave you your freedom. Is this how you repay me?"This murderous bastard actually thought he'd done me a favor. There was no reasoning with him.I snatched the gun back, holstered it, and changed tactics. "Fine. Come over in three days. I'll cook dinner for you myself. How's that?"Rafael flicked the tip of my
