Penulis: Youthful Source
Joshua's POV

I picked up the shawl from the ground and returned to the banquet hall, sitting down in a corner.

My girlfriend, Kristen Fox, stood on the stage with a wine glass in her hand as she addressed the crowd.

"Thank you all for attending Fox Technologies' eighth-anniversary celebration tonight. I would also like to take this opportunity to make an official announcement."

Leroy Parks stood up not too far away and walked onto the stage, standing next to her. Kristen interlaced her fingers with his and said, "Leroy is my fiance, and our wedding is set for next month. I hope that you'll all come to celebrate with us as well."

Thunderous applause rang out from the audience. Kristen then brought Leroy with her as they began making their rounds around the banquet tables, toasting the guests and receiving their blessings.

One of the employees got up and said, "Congratulations, Kristen and Leroy! You've finally made it!"

I looked at him. He'd asked me to lend him some money last year, and I immediately transferred the money without asking any further.

Then, the company's first-ever investor, Evans Hatfield, raised his glass to the couple and said, "Congratulations to you both. It's thanks to you both that Fox Technologies can be where it is today!"

Back then, I had stayed up countless nights and did 17 revisions to the proposal deck before finally managing to secure his investment. He'd told me back then that he was investing in me.

My closest friend at work, Mitchell Davis, also raised his glass and said, "Congrats, Kris and Roy! I'm sure that the company will soar to greater heights under both your leadership!"

He then glanced at me and said, "You're also happy for them, aren't you, Joshua Carson?"

When Kristen and Leroy made their way to another table where Kristen's mother, Cindy Holt, was seated, another woman said, "Cindy, you're so lucky to have Leroy as your son-in-law."

Cindy raised her glass and said, "Of course! He's so much more reliable than some gigolo who only knows how to spend other people's money at home!"

I felt the tears welling in my eyes.

Last month on her birthday, I had gifted her a smart thermal flask, and she praised me for being considerate of her. But now, she was telling the public that all I knew was to spend money.

I gripped the hem of my coat and left the banquet hall. But when I reached the basement parking lot, Kristen caught up to me and blocked my car from going out.

"I know that you're upset right now, Joshua, but I have to give Leroy a proper title. But other than that, the house and my money are all yours."

She paused for a bit and said, "Including your sister's medical fees. I'll continue paying for it. You don't have to worry about a thing."

Three years ago, my younger sister, Jennie Carson, was involved in a horrible car crash, and she had been in a vegetative state ever since.

Back then, Kristen stood at the ICU entrance and told me that she would take care of all the medical bills, and all I had to do was focus on keeping Jennie company.

Now, Kristen pulled open my car door to stop me from leaving. She said, "I won't let you suffer, Joshua."

I met her gaze and said, "You're officially making him your husband, and yet you're saying that you won't let me suffer? You can't have your cake and eat it too, Kristen Fox."

I then shut my car door again and drove off.

My phone lit up with a text message from her.

"You need to cool off. We'll talk again in a few days."

I didn't reply.

Instead, I went into my contacts list, removed her from my pinned contacts, and changed her name from "Kris" to just "Kristen Fox".

The next morning, Kristen came knocking on my door and handed me a gilded wedding invitation.

"My wedding will be on the 15th of next month. I want you to be there."

There was a tentatively hopeful look in her eyes.

"If you come, then I'll know that there's still a chance for us."

I suddenly remembered that Vince had just mentioned a news update on the old case from a year ago.Apparently, Cindy and Leroy had been released from prison a couple of years early due to good behavior. However, I never expected them to show up here so soon. The man turned around and ducked into an alley next to him. I didn't bother chasing after him. He didn't appear again for the next two days. But while closing up shop in the evening on the third day, I felt as though someone was watching me.When Kristen showed up at my door one particularly windy morning, she told me, "Leroy's just been released from prison. He's come here. You need to be careful."She continued, "All this happened because of me. I'll stay here and protect you and not let them get anywhere near you."That afternoon, I was clearing away the mugs on a table when he suddenly appeared at my store entrance.Leroy.He wore a cheap jacket and held a sharp knife in his hands, smiling chillingly when I met his gaze.

It was early fall the day Kristen showed up in the small riverside town.It was just past 4:00 pm in the afternoon, and I had very few customers in the coffee shop. I was busy brewing coffee behind the counter when the door opened, and the wind chime rang out.I looked up and saw her standing in the doorway. The high-spirited confidence of the past was long gone from her eyes. She'd lost a lot of weight, her eyes were bloodshot, and the collar of her shirt hung loosely from her collarbones. A button was also missing from her sleeve, and the loose threads still hung awkwardly down the fabric.Kristen looked wretched and exhausted as she clutched a document folder in her hand. The crease lines in the paper suggested that she had gripped it a little too tightly while making her way here.A long time later, she finally came a little closer to me. She stopped at the counter and spoke in a hoarse voice."I've investigated everything very clearly now, Joshua. Leroy tried deleting the ho

Joshua's POVWith Jennie now gone, there was nothing holding me back in this world anymore.I hopped off the train in a small riverside town. And with the money I had left, I rented a storefront in the southern part of town. It wasn't particularly big, just about 200 square feet, and it faced the east.I spent half a month fixing the place up—painting the walls, scrubbing the floors, and building up the counter. I bought a few sets of chairs and tables, set them up inside, and hung up a wooden sign by the entrance that said, "JC Artisanal Coffee".There were no customers on the first day.I sat behind the counter and brewed myself a cup of coffee, watching the people walk by outside my shop. That night, the owner of the florist shop next door came over with a plate of sandwiches."You're new here, aren't you? I'm Vince Gibson. Here, try some of my sandwiches."I took the plate from him and thanked him. He just waved amicably at me and left.I eventually got used to a slow-pace

On the third day, the chat logs and transfer records covering the past two years between Leroy and Cindy were retrieved. One of the messages from Cindy read, "Joshua's sister is nothing but a burden. You need to figure something out and don't let him keep zapping Kristen's energy."Leroy replied, "I've already made the arrangements for her consultation day. Just make sure you show up on time."Cindy then replied, "Fine. I'll guard the door."Kristen flipped to the second page after reading the text messages. Among the transfer records, there was a transaction marked "caretaker fee", paid to an account that she didn't recognize. So, she sought out the caretaker to verify the details. It turned out to be one of the ICU nurses. She said, "Leroy told me that the urology department was short-staffed and asked me to go over and fill in for them for a while."Kristen also got her men to investigate Leroy's medical records. She learned that he had actually undergone the tests two weeks p

After the wedding, Leroy firmly established his position as the son-in-law of the Fox family. He took the initiative to oversee Fox Technologies' internal operations. On the very first day, he completely altered the format of the financial ledgers and reorganized the existing transaction classifications. The CFO, Henry Spears, immediately brought the revised spreadsheets to Kristen. After she reviewed them, she told him to revert everything to their original format. When Leroy found out about it, he flew into a rage."I spent the entire night getting that right, and you just told them to delete everything?"He knew nothing about managing the business, but he insisted on interfering with everything. He even made a decimal point error on a supplier's price quotation, and it was only when the supplier called to verify the figures that Kristen realized Leroy had dismissed their inquiry by simply citing "market rates".Ultimately, she was the one who had to personally apologize to the

Third-Person POVKristen was a little disoriented. However, the image of Joshua coughing up blood as he turned away kept flashing through her mind."Did you unplug his sister's ventilator?" she asked, turning to Leroy.Leroy was stunned for a moment. Then, he choked out aggrievedly, "Kristen? Don't you trust me? I'm sick. I'm horribly sick. How could I have possibly done something like that?"Then, he clutched his stomach again in pain.Cindy grabbed hold of Kristen's shoulders."Kris, you know that Joshua has too much baggage. His sister being in a vegetative state will only be a burden to you. "Look at Roy! He's still worried about the company despite being very sick! Are you really going to question your own husband over someone who's already gone?"Kristen just patted Leroy's shoulder soothingly, remaining silent throughout.Later that night, after settling everything from the day, she habitually reached for her phone, wanting to text Joshua an apology and explain that sh
