Chapter 2

Penulis: Youthful Source
Kristen exchanged rings with Leroy at their wedding the next month. Leroy held her hand in his and gently slid the diamond ring onto her finger.

The crowd below the stage held up their phones to record the moment while some others cheered them on and teased them loudly.

Kristen's cousin, Victoria Rivers, yelled out, "Kiss the bride! Kiss the bride!"

The other wedding guests, including the employees, business partners, and even Mitchell, began echoing after her.

"Kiss the bride! Kiss the bride!"

However, everyone's laughter died down the moment they caught sight of me at the door. Kristen's arms froze mid-air as she looked at me, her eyes lighting up for a bit.

"Joshua! You're here!"

Leroy turned to the side to glance at her and gripped her hand tightly.

"You're the one who invited me," I said. "You said that you'd know that there was still a chance for us if I came. But that chance is no more.

"I'm only here to return a few things to you."

I then pulled out a few items one after another.

The first item was an old silver ring. Seven years ago, Kristen had picked it out from a roadside crafts stall after choosing it for a very long time. Finally, she picked a simple design and slid it onto my finger, saying, "I'll switch it for a diamond ring once I earn my first pot of gold."

That night, we strolled along the river path for hours. She told me that I was her first investor.

Eventually, the company grew bigger and bigger, and I continued wearing the ring for the next three years. It eventually got loose, but she never brought up the diamond ring again.

Kristen looked down at the new diamond ring on her finger and subtly covered it with her other hand.

The second item was a pair of train tickets to Sanderton. Five years ago, she called me from a work event and said, "I don't want to do this anymore, Joshua. Let's go to Sanderton. Right now."

We ended up buying two tickets to Sanderton and spent 26 hours on a sleeper train. She leaned over in her hard bunk and insisted on peeling an apple for me. She then promised me that she would bring me abroad for trips at least once every year.

Eventually, the company got listed, and she never brought me elsewhere ever again.

The third item was a lucky amulet. Four years ago, I stayed late at work for two consecutive months working on a project and finally passed out at the office at 3:00 am one day. But when I woke up again, I saw Kristen sitting next to my hospital bed with reddened, puffy eyes.

The next day, she brought me to a chapel and prayed for me on her knees, asking the gods to keep me safe and healthy always. She stayed there for a long time until her knees gave out.

After getting back up, she pressed the amulet into my hands and said, "You can't fall, Joshua. You're the only person for me."

Now, Kristen's gaze landed on the amulet, and she said, "Those things are all in the past, Joshua."

Leroy piped up beside her and said, "Josh, I don't know what you're trying to do. These things… belong to your past, and since I was not a part of it, I will refrain from making any comments about them."

His voice then turned aggrieved as he continued. "But it's our wedding today. Don't you think that bringing these items along with you now… is rather disrespectful to me?"

The entire hall was silent for a few seconds.

Kristen leaned into Leroy's arms and gave me an accusatory glare. "Did you ever stop to think that your actions today would make things very awkward for Leroy? What did he ever do wrong to you?"

I looked at the hand she placed over his. It was the same hand that prayed for me, pushed the amulet into my hands, and peeled the apple for me. But now, it was resting atop another man's hand while she questioned me if that man had done anything wrong.

Leroy's eyes turned red with tears, and Kristen kept a firm hold on him, refusing to let go.

Mitchell then stood up from the crowd and said, "Joshua, you said that she made those promises to you in the past. But since she never brought it up again, then what was the point of you reminding her about them anyway?"

He stepped forward and said, "I know that you're a good person since you taught me all there was to know at work. So what? She chose Roy in the end. You can stand there and show her all those things from your memories, but she's not even acknowledging them at this point."

Victoria piped up. "Yeah. You've also treated me well in the past, Joshua, and I'll never forget it. But this is their wedding, and it's not something you can stop just because you want to."

Cindy then jumped to her feet from the front row.

"Joshua Carson! You lived under our roof for seven years, and we'd never treated you unfairly. I've also been allowing Kristen to shoulder the burden of your sister's costly medical fees all these years.

"Do you even know how many years your sister has been spending in the ICU? And have you ever stopped to think how much you owed the Fox family because of that?"

I stood rooted to the ground, staring at them. They were each telling me in their own way that I was the one making a scene here.

I set the three items down and said, "I don't want these promises anymore."

I no longer wanted to have anything to do with them.

I suddenly remembered that Vince had just mentioned a news update on the old case from a year ago.Apparently, Cindy and Leroy had been released from prison a couple of years early due to good behavior. However, I never expected them to show up here so soon. The man turned around and ducked into an alley next to him. I didn't bother chasing after him. He didn't appear again for the next two days. But while closing up shop in the evening on the third day, I felt as though someone was watching me.When Kristen showed up at my door one particularly windy morning, she told me, "Leroy's just been released from prison. He's come here. You need to be careful."She continued, "All this happened because of me. I'll stay here and protect you and not let them get anywhere near you."That afternoon, I was clearing away the mugs on a table when he suddenly appeared at my store entrance.Leroy.He wore a cheap jacket and held a sharp knife in his hands, smiling chillingly when I met his gaze.

It was early fall the day Kristen showed up in the small riverside town.It was just past 4:00 pm in the afternoon, and I had very few customers in the coffee shop. I was busy brewing coffee behind the counter when the door opened, and the wind chime rang out.I looked up and saw her standing in the doorway. The high-spirited confidence of the past was long gone from her eyes. She'd lost a lot of weight, her eyes were bloodshot, and the collar of her shirt hung loosely from her collarbones. A button was also missing from her sleeve, and the loose threads still hung awkwardly down the fabric.Kristen looked wretched and exhausted as she clutched a document folder in her hand. The crease lines in the paper suggested that she had gripped it a little too tightly while making her way here.A long time later, she finally came a little closer to me. She stopped at the counter and spoke in a hoarse voice."I've investigated everything very clearly now, Joshua. Leroy tried deleting the ho

Joshua's POVWith Jennie now gone, there was nothing holding me back in this world anymore.I hopped off the train in a small riverside town. And with the money I had left, I rented a storefront in the southern part of town. It wasn't particularly big, just about 200 square feet, and it faced the east.I spent half a month fixing the place up—painting the walls, scrubbing the floors, and building up the counter. I bought a few sets of chairs and tables, set them up inside, and hung up a wooden sign by the entrance that said, "JC Artisanal Coffee".There were no customers on the first day.I sat behind the counter and brewed myself a cup of coffee, watching the people walk by outside my shop. That night, the owner of the florist shop next door came over with a plate of sandwiches."You're new here, aren't you? I'm Vince Gibson. Here, try some of my sandwiches."I took the plate from him and thanked him. He just waved amicably at me and left.I eventually got used to a slow-pace

On the third day, the chat logs and transfer records covering the past two years between Leroy and Cindy were retrieved. One of the messages from Cindy read, "Joshua's sister is nothing but a burden. You need to figure something out and don't let him keep zapping Kristen's energy."Leroy replied, "I've already made the arrangements for her consultation day. Just make sure you show up on time."Cindy then replied, "Fine. I'll guard the door."Kristen flipped to the second page after reading the text messages. Among the transfer records, there was a transaction marked "caretaker fee", paid to an account that she didn't recognize. So, she sought out the caretaker to verify the details. It turned out to be one of the ICU nurses. She said, "Leroy told me that the urology department was short-staffed and asked me to go over and fill in for them for a while."Kristen also got her men to investigate Leroy's medical records. She learned that he had actually undergone the tests two weeks p

After the wedding, Leroy firmly established his position as the son-in-law of the Fox family. He took the initiative to oversee Fox Technologies' internal operations. On the very first day, he completely altered the format of the financial ledgers and reorganized the existing transaction classifications. The CFO, Henry Spears, immediately brought the revised spreadsheets to Kristen. After she reviewed them, she told him to revert everything to their original format. When Leroy found out about it, he flew into a rage."I spent the entire night getting that right, and you just told them to delete everything?"He knew nothing about managing the business, but he insisted on interfering with everything. He even made a decimal point error on a supplier's price quotation, and it was only when the supplier called to verify the figures that Kristen realized Leroy had dismissed their inquiry by simply citing "market rates".Ultimately, she was the one who had to personally apologize to the

Third-Person POVKristen was a little disoriented. However, the image of Joshua coughing up blood as he turned away kept flashing through her mind."Did you unplug his sister's ventilator?" she asked, turning to Leroy.Leroy was stunned for a moment. Then, he choked out aggrievedly, "Kristen? Don't you trust me? I'm sick. I'm horribly sick. How could I have possibly done something like that?"Then, he clutched his stomach again in pain.Cindy grabbed hold of Kristen's shoulders."Kris, you know that Joshua has too much baggage. His sister being in a vegetative state will only be a burden to you. "Look at Roy! He's still worried about the company despite being very sick! Are you really going to question your own husband over someone who's already gone?"Kristen just patted Leroy's shoulder soothingly, remaining silent throughout.Later that night, after settling everything from the day, she habitually reached for her phone, wanting to text Joshua an apology and explain that sh
