Chapter 3

Penulis: Youthful Source
I'd barely been out of the hospital for four hours when Jennie's caretaker, Livia Hodge, called me.

She spoke in a low, hushed tone. "Joshua, Jennie's vitals dropped again. Dr. Riley suggests that the family come in and be prepared for the worst."

I immediately drove back to the hospital. Kristen called me twice on the way there, but I never picked up.

When I arrived at the ICU, Livia told me that Jennie had been stabilized again for the moment. However, a new round of tests was required next Thursday, and I had to pay the fees upfront for them to schedule it.

I sat on the hospital bench and checked the balance in my bank account.

It was far from enough.

Just then, Kristen appeared out of the blue and paid everything for me.

"I've paid for your sister's tests for next Thursday," she told me.

I looked up at her as she turned around to meet my eyes. She said, "I don't care if you hate me, but I am the one who saved your sister's life. You're never leaving me."

I felt my energy drained from my body at once.

"You've already married another man, Kristen. And now, you're still threatening me with Jennie's life so that I'd never leave you?"

She walked up to me and crouched down to hug me.

"Joshua, you do know that you've been coming to the hospital more often than going home ever since your sister got into the accident, don't you? I came home to an empty household every single day. But Leroy was the one who kept me company after that."

I stared back at her.

"So, you chose him instead."

"Yes. I'll admit that I was hesitant about it at first," she said. "But he still accompanied me through thick and thin and never asked me for anything. In the end, the choice was a no-brainer.

"Leroy has also been the one helping out at the company over the years, from finances to executive tasks. He did all these for me, so I thought that I had to pay him back somehow."

I looked past her shoulder at the ICU door. Jennie was in the room behind that door, and her ventilator was still beeping regularly.

Kristen continued, "Even if he didn't contribute to anything majorly, he still put in a lot of hard work. He's done a lot for the company, so I decided to give him the title instead."

I was the one who had accompanied her for seven years. When her first startup failed, I sat on the curbside with her as we ate plain buns. When her proposal was rejected 17 times in a row, I helped her edit and rewrite her presentation deck.

But because I wasn't able to keep her company every day ever since Jennie's accident, she openly decided to let another man take my place instead. At the time when I needed her the most, she chose to give her care and attention to another man instead.

I said slowly but clearly, "You say that he never asked you for anything, Kristen, but he's literally asking you to choose him by staying by your side. You just don't want to admit it."

I then tried to shove her away. However, she suddenly grabbed the back of my head and pressed her lips hard against mine.

The moment her lips touched mine, I bit them hard, and she grunted as blood trickled into her mouth from the bite. Yet, she refused to let go and deepened the kiss even more.

A very long time later, she finally let go and looked at me.

"Your sister has a checkup next Thursday. If you sign the papers now, she will undergo the test. If you don't, then I will have wasted three months' worth of her bills. Think about it carefully.

"If you stay, I will immediately gather all the top specialists in the country to treat her."

I sneered.

"Tell me, Kristen. Why are you gathering all the top specialists for Jennie? Is it because you truly want to save her, or is it because you're using it to control me and force me to stay?"

She stared back into my eyes.

"Both."

Eventually, I gave in.

I pushed the ICU door open and looked at Jennie lying in her hospital bed, the breathing tubes connected to her mouth as her chest rose and fell rhythmically.

I sat down by her bed and held her hand tightly.

It had been three years, and she had never opened her eyes even once.

I couldn't sleep that night. I knew that I had to stay with Kristen at least until Jennie's checkup next Thursday.

I suddenly remembered that Vince had just mentioned a news update on the old case from a year ago.Apparently, Cindy and Leroy had been released from prison a couple of years early due to good behavior. However, I never expected them to show up here so soon. The man turned around and ducked into an alley next to him. I didn't bother chasing after him. He didn't appear again for the next two days. But while closing up shop in the evening on the third day, I felt as though someone was watching me.When Kristen showed up at my door one particularly windy morning, she told me, "Leroy's just been released from prison. He's come here. You need to be careful."She continued, "All this happened because of me. I'll stay here and protect you and not let them get anywhere near you."That afternoon, I was clearing away the mugs on a table when he suddenly appeared at my store entrance.Leroy.He wore a cheap jacket and held a sharp knife in his hands, smiling chillingly when I met his gaze.

It was early fall the day Kristen showed up in the small riverside town.It was just past 4:00 pm in the afternoon, and I had very few customers in the coffee shop. I was busy brewing coffee behind the counter when the door opened, and the wind chime rang out.I looked up and saw her standing in the doorway. The high-spirited confidence of the past was long gone from her eyes. She'd lost a lot of weight, her eyes were bloodshot, and the collar of her shirt hung loosely from her collarbones. A button was also missing from her sleeve, and the loose threads still hung awkwardly down the fabric.Kristen looked wretched and exhausted as she clutched a document folder in her hand. The crease lines in the paper suggested that she had gripped it a little too tightly while making her way here.A long time later, she finally came a little closer to me. She stopped at the counter and spoke in a hoarse voice."I've investigated everything very clearly now, Joshua. Leroy tried deleting the ho

Joshua's POVWith Jennie now gone, there was nothing holding me back in this world anymore.I hopped off the train in a small riverside town. And with the money I had left, I rented a storefront in the southern part of town. It wasn't particularly big, just about 200 square feet, and it faced the east.I spent half a month fixing the place up—painting the walls, scrubbing the floors, and building up the counter. I bought a few sets of chairs and tables, set them up inside, and hung up a wooden sign by the entrance that said, "JC Artisanal Coffee".There were no customers on the first day.I sat behind the counter and brewed myself a cup of coffee, watching the people walk by outside my shop. That night, the owner of the florist shop next door came over with a plate of sandwiches."You're new here, aren't you? I'm Vince Gibson. Here, try some of my sandwiches."I took the plate from him and thanked him. He just waved amicably at me and left.I eventually got used to a slow-pace

On the third day, the chat logs and transfer records covering the past two years between Leroy and Cindy were retrieved. One of the messages from Cindy read, "Joshua's sister is nothing but a burden. You need to figure something out and don't let him keep zapping Kristen's energy."Leroy replied, "I've already made the arrangements for her consultation day. Just make sure you show up on time."Cindy then replied, "Fine. I'll guard the door."Kristen flipped to the second page after reading the text messages. Among the transfer records, there was a transaction marked "caretaker fee", paid to an account that she didn't recognize. So, she sought out the caretaker to verify the details. It turned out to be one of the ICU nurses. She said, "Leroy told me that the urology department was short-staffed and asked me to go over and fill in for them for a while."Kristen also got her men to investigate Leroy's medical records. She learned that he had actually undergone the tests two weeks p

After the wedding, Leroy firmly established his position as the son-in-law of the Fox family. He took the initiative to oversee Fox Technologies' internal operations. On the very first day, he completely altered the format of the financial ledgers and reorganized the existing transaction classifications. The CFO, Henry Spears, immediately brought the revised spreadsheets to Kristen. After she reviewed them, she told him to revert everything to their original format. When Leroy found out about it, he flew into a rage."I spent the entire night getting that right, and you just told them to delete everything?"He knew nothing about managing the business, but he insisted on interfering with everything. He even made a decimal point error on a supplier's price quotation, and it was only when the supplier called to verify the figures that Kristen realized Leroy had dismissed their inquiry by simply citing "market rates".Ultimately, she was the one who had to personally apologize to the

Third-Person POVKristen was a little disoriented. However, the image of Joshua coughing up blood as he turned away kept flashing through her mind."Did you unplug his sister's ventilator?" she asked, turning to Leroy.Leroy was stunned for a moment. Then, he choked out aggrievedly, "Kristen? Don't you trust me? I'm sick. I'm horribly sick. How could I have possibly done something like that?"Then, he clutched his stomach again in pain.Cindy grabbed hold of Kristen's shoulders."Kris, you know that Joshua has too much baggage. His sister being in a vegetative state will only be a burden to you. "Look at Roy! He's still worried about the company despite being very sick! Are you really going to question your own husband over someone who's already gone?"Kristen just patted Leroy's shoulder soothingly, remaining silent throughout.Later that night, after settling everything from the day, she habitually reached for her phone, wanting to text Joshua an apology and explain that sh
