Chapter 1

I lazily watched the numbers climbing on my phone screen.

The story about me had quickly overshadowed the rumors surrounding Katrina Salt and her new lover. It shot straight to the top of the trending charts and stayed there.

Less than an hour later, Katrina stormed through the door.

She marched straight up to me, snatched the wineglass from my hand, and smashed it hard against the floor.

"Felix Jaeger, how could you be so shameless?"

She was absolutely livid. "How dare you associate with those lowly women?"

I laughed mockingly and looked up at her. "And are you any better? If you counted every man who's been in your bed, you'd have enough for a whole soccer team. You knew I hated Eason Cooper, and you still slept with him."

I lifted my chin, and my smile turned even frostier. "I'm just paying you back in kind. Just so we're clear, I've slept with every woman here."

"Get out! All of you, get out!" Katrina screamed in fury.

The bodyguards behind her immediately shoved all the women out of the room.

Her cold gaze settled on me as if she were looking at an expensive possession that had been soiled.

She commanded, "Strip him."

Two bodyguards stepped forward and tore off my clothes roughly.

"Wash him clean with ice water."

Freezing water mixed with chunks of ice was poured over my head. The sudden cold made me jerk violently. My muscles cramped uncontrollably, and my teeth chattered.

One bucket, and then another followed.

The icy water left me freezing and miserable. I was soaked and utterly humiliated. Still, none of it came close to the pain I felt inside.

Through the blurred curtain of water, I saw Katrina standing a short distance away. She watched my pathetic, disheveled state with a cold, grim expression.

Katrina sneered, "Don't test my patience, Felix. This had better be the last time. Don't forget your place as the Salt family's live-in son-in-law."

I choked on the water and broke into uncontrollable laughter. The laughter was harsh and almost manic.

She kept stressing that I should know my "place" as her husband and watch her bring back one lover after another. At the same time, I had to keep a straight face and cover for her, pretending I didn't care. I even had to play the part of a loving husband before the media.

When I was younger, I had been miserable and stubborn. Whenever a man started showing up beside her, I desperately tried to drive him away. But the moment I got rid of one, another took his place. There was never an end to them.

I'd almost forgotten that we'd once gotten together because we loved each other.

Katrina looked at my crazed state with displeasure and warned me again. "Someone of your background should consider it the greatest stroke of luck just to marry into the Salt family. You'd better learn to be grateful. If you make me angry, your good days will be over."

Our families had been worlds apart in status. She had once fought with her family for a long time just to be with me. To get her father to approve our marriage, she'd knelt outside their private chapel for three whole days. She'd nearly wrecked her knees that time.

She had held me in her arms and said, "Felix, for you, anything is worth it."

I had compromised for her, too. I gave up a full scholarship and the chance to pursue my studies abroad. I willingly signed that brutally restrictive agreement and became the Salt family's live-in son-in-law.

I set down the pen in my hand and looked up at Katrina coldly. "Why not?"I walked over to her, speaking in an icy voice, every word striking at the heart. "Katrina, the moment you caused my mom's death, you should have known I'd make you pay for it."The moment I mentioned Mom, the anger on Katrina's face eased, and she froze. She stammered, "I-I didn't know your mother died."Katrina hurried to explain herself, obvious panic creeping into her voice. "I thought she just passed out like she usually did. Didn't that happen all the time?"She was trying to brush off Mom's death as nothing more than an unfortunate accident. How ridiculous.I looked into her eyes, where there was a trace of avoidance on top of the panicked stare."Were you truly unaware, or you just didn't care?" I asked pointedly.I scoffed and shook my head. "Katrina, with how things are now, there's no need to keep pretending. It's pathetically fake."Her body stiffened, and a wounded look appeared in her eyes

Eason started panicking for real. He grabbed Katrina's arm and desperately tried to come up with an explanation. He yelled, "I don't know anything! Someone must have framed me!"Katrina yanked her arm away with a glacial look. "Shut up! You idiot!"She wanted nothing more than to tear apart the useless man who had done nothing but create problems for her. Nevertheless, it was already too late.Countless reporters had broken through the security team's defenses and surrounded them."Ms. Salt, is it true that you misappropriated company funds to buy a private island?""Mr. Cooper, was that your voice in the recording? Did you abuse your position to funnel money to your relatives?""Are the Salt Group's financial losses connected to your personal spending?"The questions came at them like a barrage of bullets.Trapped in the middle of the crowd, Katrina's face turned deathly pale. Her pride, once her greatest source of confidence, had been ripped to shreds, leaving her utterly hu

Katrina addressed the reporters. "Several issues have recently come to light within the Salt Group. On behalf of the company, I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to our investors, business partners, and the public for the trouble this has caused."Her voice trembled with just the right amount of emotion. Tears welled in her eyes, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall. She perfectly embodied the image of a powerful businesswoman who had been called upon in a crisis, desperately trying to turn things around after being deceived by the executives working under her.Eason stood beside her in a perfectly tailored dark suit, his face full of concern and grief. He took Katrina's hand. Their fingers interlocked as though he were silently giving her strength. When the cameras caught their clasped hands, they looked like a pair of star-crossed lovers weathering a storm together. The carefully prepared statement was delivered with great emotion, while all responsibility was s

There was no point explaining or arguing anymore. Katrina had to get to the company immediately to handle the situation. In the car, she barked into the phone at Mandy. "Get those stories taken down! I don't care how much it costs. Bury the trending searches! Do it now!"Mandy sounded helpless and desperate. "Ms. Salt, we've been trying. We've already spent tens of millions, but we can't suppress them! The other side is coming at us too hard. It's like there are countless people pushing the stories from behind."We take one down, and three more immediately take its place! And..."Katrina urged, "And what? Spit it out!"Mandy replied, "We found some traces. It looks like the Gilbert family may be behind this."At the mention of the Gilbert family, Katrina felt as though someone had poured a bucket of ice water right over her head. Her grip on her phone tightened, causing the veins on the back of her hand to stand out. Everyone in the city knew that the Salt and Gilbert families

Early the next morning, the front pages of every major news outlet in Doverton were dominated by two bombshell stories. The first headline read, "The Salt Family's Son-in-Law Has Been Replaced". The accompanying photo showed Eason grinning triumphantly. The second story was even more shocking. It read, "Multiple Salt Group Subsidiaries Hit by Major Scandal".Evidence of failed product inspections flooded the internet. The story occupied five top spots on various search engines. I sat in a coffee shop, watching my phone screen light up as one notification after another popped up.Back at the Salt villa, Katrina lounged lazily on the couch. A satisfied smile played at the corner of her lips. She was certain that when I saw the news about the son-in-law of the Salt family being replaced, I would regret everything. She wanted me to understand exactly where I stood. In her eyes, I was a useless man who couldn't survive without her family. She had even planned what she would say when

Eason's eyes lit up. There was a flicker of anticipation in them as he looked at Katrina.Katrina looked down at me from above. "Since you admit that you were in the wrong, prostrate yourself and bow your head to Eason twice. Then we'll call it even."I jerked my head up and glared at her.She casually flicked her fingernail and taunted, "What? Don't you need the money for your mother's medical treatment?"Her words crushed the last remaining bit of pride I had left. I closed my eyes and lowered my head in humiliation. My forehead slammed hard against the cold floor. There went the first thud, and then the second. Even louder cheers and laughter came from the crowd."What a pathetic loser!""Poor people are so spineless! Haha!"I forced down the crushing pain in my chest and the humiliation boiling inside me. Then, I asked hoarsely, "Can you unfreeze my cards now?"Katrina nodded.I pulled out my phone hastily, desperate to transfer the money to Pamela. But the moment I saw
