Chapter 2

Author: Blue Strip
Katrina's and my lavish wedding had been the event of the year. The media had called us the city's golden couple.

But despite how deeply we'd once loved each other, I discovered she was seeing someone else only a month into our marriage.

The night she had stayed out until dawn, she had someone lock me inside our bedroom.

She'd only called me to deliver a cold warning. "Felix, I love you, but I hope you'll be sensible. Don't let that ridiculous little thing called love ruin the family we have now. When I've had enough fun, I'll naturally come back to you."

...

Sitting there freezing from head to toe, I found it all so very absurd.

I said, "Let's get a divorce, Katrina. If you refuse to divorce me, there'll be a second and many more times like this episode. The moment you walk out that door, I'll find another woman."

Our marriage had already fallen apart beyond repair. I didn't want to waste another second trying to hold it together.

She grabbed me by the throat in a fit of rage. My vision began to darken. Only after I stopped struggling did she finally let go.

She watched me cough and gasp for breath, then laughed in fury. "Fine, Felix. If you don't know how to appreciate what you have, I'll give you what you want."

Ten minutes later, her assistant, Mandy Foster, walked in with a divorce agreement.

Katrina threw it down right in front of me. "Go ahead and sign it if you have the guts! Didn't you say you wanted a divorce?"

The terms were brutally one-sided. I would be walking away with practically nothing. Katrina didn't even look at me before turning and leaving. She was certain that I wouldn't sign.

I didn't even bother reading the terms. Without hesitation, I grabbed the pen and signed my name at the bottom. I handed the signed agreement to the flustered Mandy. For the first time in years, I felt completely at ease.

Mandy looked troubled as she tried to talk me out of divorce. "Mr. Jaeger, why are you letting your anger get the better of you? Ms. Salt still loves you. Just now, she even told me to bring you some clean clothes while she was downstairs..."

I waved her off.

My body was still freezing, and I couldn't stop shivering. But for the first time, I felt free.

I could have endured the vicious cycle of tolerating Katrina's endless affairs and making up with her afterward for the rest of my life. But of all the things she could have done, she should never have slept with Eason.

When I was 16, Eason's mother had seduced my father. I'd never forgotten how the gentle, refined man I'd once known had started beating my mother nearly half to death every day just to force her into a divorce.

After more than a decade together, my parents had suddenly become enemies who could no longer stand the sight of each other.

From the very first day Eason transferred to our high school, he turned all our classmates against me. He scribbled all over my books, and then acted innocent whenever the teachers were around. Behind their backs, he did countless other things to me.

He had been the nightmare that haunted my entire adolescence.

I'd told Katrina about those years, about what it had been like to live as if I were trapped in hell. She had held me close, kissing my eyes again and again as she swore she would get revenge for me.

She had promised, "Felix, I'll make sure you see Eason kneel in front of you and beg for mercy one day."

Ironically, my worst nightmare became one of her many lovers lying beside her at night. As if that was not bad enough, she had even planned to throw Eason a lavish wedding celebration on my birthday.

This was all so she could force me to back down and surrender. She wanted to make me understand that she was the only person I could ever depend on. The thrill she got from controlling me seemed to matter more to her than any love she'd ever claimed to feel for me.

I hadn't even had time to go home and change out of my clothes that were soaked from the ice water when my neighbor, Pamela Zahn, called me.

"Felix, please come quick! Something happened to your mother!"

I felt the world spin instantly.

By the time I reached the hospital, Mom had already been rushed into the emergency room. Pamela grabbed my arm. Wiping away tears, she told me what had happened.

That afternoon, a group of vicious-looking men had barged into my home. When she finally worked up the courage to open her door and check on us, she found my front door wide open and Mom lying unconscious on the floor.

My heart sank to my stomach as a chill shot from the soles of my feet straight to the top of my head.

It had to be Eason. Besides him, I couldn't think of anyone else doing such a thing.

The emergency room doors suddenly opened, and an exhausted doctor walked out.

I set down the pen in my hand and looked up at Katrina coldly. "Why not?"I walked over to her, speaking in an icy voice, every word striking at the heart. "Katrina, the moment you caused my mom's death, you should have known I'd make you pay for it."The moment I mentioned Mom, the anger on Katrina's face eased, and she froze. She stammered, "I-I didn't know your mother died."Katrina hurried to explain herself, obvious panic creeping into her voice. "I thought she just passed out like she usually did. Didn't that happen all the time?"She was trying to brush off Mom's death as nothing more than an unfortunate accident. How ridiculous.I looked into her eyes, where there was a trace of avoidance on top of the panicked stare."Were you truly unaware, or you just didn't care?" I asked pointedly.I scoffed and shook my head. "Katrina, with how things are now, there's no need to keep pretending. It's pathetically fake."Her body stiffened, and a wounded look appeared in her eyes

Eason started panicking for real. He grabbed Katrina's arm and desperately tried to come up with an explanation. He yelled, "I don't know anything! Someone must have framed me!"Katrina yanked her arm away with a glacial look. "Shut up! You idiot!"She wanted nothing more than to tear apart the useless man who had done nothing but create problems for her. Nevertheless, it was already too late.Countless reporters had broken through the security team's defenses and surrounded them."Ms. Salt, is it true that you misappropriated company funds to buy a private island?""Mr. Cooper, was that your voice in the recording? Did you abuse your position to funnel money to your relatives?""Are the Salt Group's financial losses connected to your personal spending?"The questions came at them like a barrage of bullets.Trapped in the middle of the crowd, Katrina's face turned deathly pale. Her pride, once her greatest source of confidence, had been ripped to shreds, leaving her utterly hu

Katrina addressed the reporters. "Several issues have recently come to light within the Salt Group. On behalf of the company, I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to our investors, business partners, and the public for the trouble this has caused."Her voice trembled with just the right amount of emotion. Tears welled in her eyes, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall. She perfectly embodied the image of a powerful businesswoman who had been called upon in a crisis, desperately trying to turn things around after being deceived by the executives working under her.Eason stood beside her in a perfectly tailored dark suit, his face full of concern and grief. He took Katrina's hand. Their fingers interlocked as though he were silently giving her strength. When the cameras caught their clasped hands, they looked like a pair of star-crossed lovers weathering a storm together. The carefully prepared statement was delivered with great emotion, while all responsibility was s

There was no point explaining or arguing anymore. Katrina had to get to the company immediately to handle the situation. In the car, she barked into the phone at Mandy. "Get those stories taken down! I don't care how much it costs. Bury the trending searches! Do it now!"Mandy sounded helpless and desperate. "Ms. Salt, we've been trying. We've already spent tens of millions, but we can't suppress them! The other side is coming at us too hard. It's like there are countless people pushing the stories from behind."We take one down, and three more immediately take its place! And..."Katrina urged, "And what? Spit it out!"Mandy replied, "We found some traces. It looks like the Gilbert family may be behind this."At the mention of the Gilbert family, Katrina felt as though someone had poured a bucket of ice water right over her head. Her grip on her phone tightened, causing the veins on the back of her hand to stand out. Everyone in the city knew that the Salt and Gilbert families

Early the next morning, the front pages of every major news outlet in Doverton were dominated by two bombshell stories. The first headline read, "The Salt Family's Son-in-Law Has Been Replaced". The accompanying photo showed Eason grinning triumphantly. The second story was even more shocking. It read, "Multiple Salt Group Subsidiaries Hit by Major Scandal".Evidence of failed product inspections flooded the internet. The story occupied five top spots on various search engines. I sat in a coffee shop, watching my phone screen light up as one notification after another popped up.Back at the Salt villa, Katrina lounged lazily on the couch. A satisfied smile played at the corner of her lips. She was certain that when I saw the news about the son-in-law of the Salt family being replaced, I would regret everything. She wanted me to understand exactly where I stood. In her eyes, I was a useless man who couldn't survive without her family. She had even planned what she would say when

Eason's eyes lit up. There was a flicker of anticipation in them as he looked at Katrina.Katrina looked down at me from above. "Since you admit that you were in the wrong, prostrate yourself and bow your head to Eason twice. Then we'll call it even."I jerked my head up and glared at her.She casually flicked her fingernail and taunted, "What? Don't you need the money for your mother's medical treatment?"Her words crushed the last remaining bit of pride I had left. I closed my eyes and lowered my head in humiliation. My forehead slammed hard against the cold floor. There went the first thud, and then the second. Even louder cheers and laughter came from the crowd."What a pathetic loser!""Poor people are so spineless! Haha!"I forced down the crushing pain in my chest and the humiliation boiling inside me. Then, I asked hoarsely, "Can you unfreeze my cards now?"Katrina nodded.I pulled out my phone hastily, desperate to transfer the money to Pamela. But the moment I saw
