Chapter 3

Author: Blue Strip
The doctor said, "The patient's condition is extremely serious. We need to administer a specialized medication immediately. Otherwise, I'm afraid she won't make it."

My heart sank as I rushed to the payment desk. No matter which card I tried, all I got was the same message—transaction declined. The bank account had been frozen.

I called Katrina like a madman.

Once… Twice… She didn't answer.

Just as I was on the verge of breaking down, my phone vibrated.

An anonymous message came in. I opened it and saw that it was a video.

By the pool, Eason was wrapped in a bath towel. He looked as innocent as ever as he leaned against Katrina.

He whined, "Trina, I went to check on Mrs. Jaeger today because I was worried about her. Who knew she'd get so worked up that she'd pass out? If something happens to her, will Felix come after me?"

Katrina frowned slightly before smoothing her expression. Her eyes were cold.

She said, "Don't worry. His mother passes out a few times a year. She'll live. Besides, this will teach Felix a lesson. He's been too rebellious lately. He's forgotten his place and even dared to talk back to me."

Eason wrapped his arms around hers and acted spoiled.

A hint of tenderness flashed through Katrina's eyes. "Don't worry. Even if his mother really dies, I'll make sure you don't take the blame."

The video ended.

I felt my blood run cold in that instant. My heart had already been torn to pieces countless times. Even so, hearing those words come out of her mouth firsthand still hurt in a dull, unbearable way.

Just then, Katrina called me.

I forced down the pain and hatred burning inside me.

My voice came out hoarse as I said, "Katrina, my mother is in the hospital fighting for her life. I need money. Please unfreeze my cards."

Her cold voice didn't leave any room for objection. "Fine. But first, get back to the villa and apologize to Eason. Kneel down and tell everyone that he and his mother aren't worthless trash. Otherwise, your cards stay frozen forever."

My throat felt unbearably tight. So much so that even breathing hurt.

I pleaded humbly, "Katrina, please. Save Mom first. As long as she survives, I'll do anything."

She laughed derisively, her voice dripping with contempt. "You're in no position to bargain with me."

I could no longer suppress my rage.

I screamed into the phone, "You know damn well Eason was the one who drove my mother into the hospital! Why do you have to take things this far? Do you even have a heart? Mom treated you so well all these years. Have you forgotten everything she's done for you?"

There was silence on the other end. Then, I heard Eason quietly sobbing.

Katrina's frigid voice sounded again. "What's so special about the little, insignificant things she did? It was nothing more than a cheap way for someone from the bottom of society to curry favor with me."

In that moment, I hated myself.

I hated myself for ever falling in love with such a cold-blooded monster.

Left with no choice, I stumbled my way back to the villa.

The pool party was in full swing, the music blasting so loudly it shook the walls. Katrina and Eason were surrounded by people. They were like a king and queen presiding over their court.

My arrival made me look like a clown who had wandered into the wrong venue.

Everyone turned to stare at me, their eyes filled with mocking amusement as they waited for the show.

Katrina looked at me coldly and gestured. "Come here and apologize."

The crowd automatically parted to make a path for me. They laughed and whispered among themselves.

"Look at him. He looks pathetic."

"He's the number one kept man in all of Doverton. He's worthless."

Eason had his arm around Katrina as he spoke in a falsely magnanimous tone. "Forget it, Katrina. It's not like this is the first time Felix has misunderstood me."

As I looked at his fake, self-righteous expression, hatred surged through me. However, Mom was waiting for me to save her.

I clenched my jaw and dropped to my knees in front of him. "I'm sorry."

The humiliating words were forced through my gritted teeth.

The people around us started chanting. "Bow your head! Bow your head!"

I set down the pen in my hand and looked up at Katrina coldly. "Why not?"I walked over to her, speaking in an icy voice, every word striking at the heart. "Katrina, the moment you caused my mom's death, you should have known I'd make you pay for it."The moment I mentioned Mom, the anger on Katrina's face eased, and she froze. She stammered, "I-I didn't know your mother died."Katrina hurried to explain herself, obvious panic creeping into her voice. "I thought she just passed out like she usually did. Didn't that happen all the time?"She was trying to brush off Mom's death as nothing more than an unfortunate accident. How ridiculous.I looked into her eyes, where there was a trace of avoidance on top of the panicked stare."Were you truly unaware, or you just didn't care?" I asked pointedly.I scoffed and shook my head. "Katrina, with how things are now, there's no need to keep pretending. It's pathetically fake."Her body stiffened, and a wounded look appeared in her eyes

Eason started panicking for real. He grabbed Katrina's arm and desperately tried to come up with an explanation. He yelled, "I don't know anything! Someone must have framed me!"Katrina yanked her arm away with a glacial look. "Shut up! You idiot!"She wanted nothing more than to tear apart the useless man who had done nothing but create problems for her. Nevertheless, it was already too late.Countless reporters had broken through the security team's defenses and surrounded them."Ms. Salt, is it true that you misappropriated company funds to buy a private island?""Mr. Cooper, was that your voice in the recording? Did you abuse your position to funnel money to your relatives?""Are the Salt Group's financial losses connected to your personal spending?"The questions came at them like a barrage of bullets.Trapped in the middle of the crowd, Katrina's face turned deathly pale. Her pride, once her greatest source of confidence, had been ripped to shreds, leaving her utterly hu

Katrina addressed the reporters. "Several issues have recently come to light within the Salt Group. On behalf of the company, I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to our investors, business partners, and the public for the trouble this has caused."Her voice trembled with just the right amount of emotion. Tears welled in her eyes, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall. She perfectly embodied the image of a powerful businesswoman who had been called upon in a crisis, desperately trying to turn things around after being deceived by the executives working under her.Eason stood beside her in a perfectly tailored dark suit, his face full of concern and grief. He took Katrina's hand. Their fingers interlocked as though he were silently giving her strength. When the cameras caught their clasped hands, they looked like a pair of star-crossed lovers weathering a storm together. The carefully prepared statement was delivered with great emotion, while all responsibility was s

There was no point explaining or arguing anymore. Katrina had to get to the company immediately to handle the situation. In the car, she barked into the phone at Mandy. "Get those stories taken down! I don't care how much it costs. Bury the trending searches! Do it now!"Mandy sounded helpless and desperate. "Ms. Salt, we've been trying. We've already spent tens of millions, but we can't suppress them! The other side is coming at us too hard. It's like there are countless people pushing the stories from behind."We take one down, and three more immediately take its place! And..."Katrina urged, "And what? Spit it out!"Mandy replied, "We found some traces. It looks like the Gilbert family may be behind this."At the mention of the Gilbert family, Katrina felt as though someone had poured a bucket of ice water right over her head. Her grip on her phone tightened, causing the veins on the back of her hand to stand out. Everyone in the city knew that the Salt and Gilbert families

Early the next morning, the front pages of every major news outlet in Doverton were dominated by two bombshell stories. The first headline read, "The Salt Family's Son-in-Law Has Been Replaced". The accompanying photo showed Eason grinning triumphantly. The second story was even more shocking. It read, "Multiple Salt Group Subsidiaries Hit by Major Scandal".Evidence of failed product inspections flooded the internet. The story occupied five top spots on various search engines. I sat in a coffee shop, watching my phone screen light up as one notification after another popped up.Back at the Salt villa, Katrina lounged lazily on the couch. A satisfied smile played at the corner of her lips. She was certain that when I saw the news about the son-in-law of the Salt family being replaced, I would regret everything. She wanted me to understand exactly where I stood. In her eyes, I was a useless man who couldn't survive without her family. She had even planned what she would say when

Eason's eyes lit up. There was a flicker of anticipation in them as he looked at Katrina.Katrina looked down at me from above. "Since you admit that you were in the wrong, prostrate yourself and bow your head to Eason twice. Then we'll call it even."I jerked my head up and glared at her.She casually flicked her fingernail and taunted, "What? Don't you need the money for your mother's medical treatment?"Her words crushed the last remaining bit of pride I had left. I closed my eyes and lowered my head in humiliation. My forehead slammed hard against the cold floor. There went the first thud, and then the second. Even louder cheers and laughter came from the crowd."What a pathetic loser!""Poor people are so spineless! Haha!"I forced down the crushing pain in my chest and the humiliation boiling inside me. Then, I asked hoarsely, "Can you unfreeze my cards now?"Katrina nodded.I pulled out my phone hastily, desperate to transfer the money to Pamela. But the moment I saw
