LOGIN(Chelsea's POV)
"Dad!"
My eyes widened.
That voice. I recognized it. It was Adrian.
Just as I'd guessed right, I was immediately released from Leonard's grip and able to land my eyes on that arrogant face of his. His smile so wide it was as if he was the happiest man in the world. Not like someone who had recently cheated on his so-called prettiest girlfriend in the world with her bestfriend.
To say the least, he wasn't alone. Clinging to his arm, like she'd been born there, was Sophia.
Her blonde curls gleamed under the lights, her red lips curled in a smile too sweet to be real. She wore a designer dress that screamed money and expenive jewelries she never had before I caught her in bed with my boyfriend.
My heart twisted. The sight of them together made me feel like a knife was being driven into my chest. I also felt nauseous, like bile was rising in my throat.
However, I kept my head down. Adrian didn't seem to notice me yet as he quickened his pace to give his father a big hug.
"Adrian," Leonard said, smoothly. "You didn't tell me you were coming."
"Thought I'd surprise you," Adrian replied, his tone high and over joyous.
Leonard's eyes slid to Sophia. "And this must be your... "
"Girlfriend." Adrian wrapped his hands around Sophia's waist.
The pain in my chest heightened as I watched his hands linger at her curve like it was a normal thing for him. Like I'd never been in the picture and Sophia was the one whom he had dated for two years.
The curve of Sophia's lips lifted higher, then bright teeth showed. "Sophia Jones. A pleasure to meet you, sir." She said, offering her hand.
Leonard didn't take it. He just looked at her, unreadable, until she dropped her arm.
She straightened under the weight of his attention at once, her smile faltering just slightly. I noticed how Adrian's shoulders stiffened as well, how his easy arrogance faltered under his father's gaze.
I knew what it meant. It was my cue to leave. There was no way Adrian's ego could be crushed that way and he wouldn't be angry that someone had been there to witness it.
"I should get going, Mr Grey." I dropped my head even lower and began throwing my legs as fast as I could towards the doors without waiting for a go ahead.
"Chelsea?"
I froze at the sound of Adrian calling my name. Slowly, painfully, I turned.
"Chelsea Laurent," Adrian drawled, stepping closer. His blue eyes flicked over me with cruel amusement. "What in the world are you doing here?"
Sophia's eyes widened as her gaze rested on me too. They really didn't notice me until now.
"You two... know each other?" Leonard asked, his eyebrows raising along with his question. His gaze shifted from Adrian to me, then Adrian again.
"Yes," Adrian nodded. "She's my—" Sophia's nails dug into his arm before the words I expected to hear could come out of his mouth. He cleared his throat, shifting in his stance. "Friend. She's my friend."
My stomach churned. I wanted to slap him. To scream into his face while I bursted into tears again. To tell his father the truth. About everything. How his son had cheated, how his son had casually torn me to shreds. But I bit my lip.
Leonard's gaze flicked between us, as if reading the room. Something dark crossed his eyes, but he said nothing. Instead, he gestured his hand towards the doors. "You can excuse us."
I nodded my head and stepped out without looking back. The moment the doors closed behind me with a heavy thud, I stood frozen, my chest heaving, shame and fury twisting inside me.
They were here. Together. And what if Leonard saw through the lie? That I wasn't just Adrian's friend.
What if he thought I was pathetic? Using this job to crawl back into Adrian's life?
The thought made me sick.
I tried to busy myself with work, but my mind was elsewhere. I could hear the low rumble of voices through the door, the sharp edge of Adrian's laugh, Sophia's giggles. Every sound was a dagger.
When the meeting finally ended, Adrian emerged first, an unexpected frown on his face. He leaned close as he came standing in front of me. "Who the fuck gave you this job?"
I blinked, confused. I looked towards the doors as if Leonard would be there to answer for me but the doors were closed. I returned my attention on Adrian. "I don't understand. I was hired."
Sophia's gaze lingered too. She looked even more angry. "I bet she gave herself just to get this job."
I watched in disbelief as the one I used to call my bestfriend talked about me like I was nothing but trash in her eyes. Did she always think of me that way? Was our friendship all pretense? Had I been the one imagining our closeness all along?
"Impossible. There's no way my father would settle for a low life like her." Adrian sneered. His smirk returned. "Besides, she's a virgin. Someone like her couldn't pull off such position with her innocence."
Sophia chuckled. "I know right? I can't believe I almost forgot that."
Adrian leaned down as if I couldn't hear him loud and clear enough. "Careful, Chelsea. Don't get too comfortable here and think you'll be holding this job for long. My father chews girls like you up and spits them out."
I flinched, my nails biting into my palms.
"And I'll be back to make sure Sophia is the one sitting in that chair. Not you." He added.
Sophia's face turned crimson red. She leaned in, planting a kiss on his cheek. "Let's go now baby or they might start to think we're bullying her. The job is already mine whether she likes it or not."
With one last frosty look thrown my way, they walked away hand in hand.
When they were gone, I sagged against the desk, a tight knot in my stomach. No matter how many times I repeated it in my head that everything was going to be okay, I still found it hard to believe it. Every fiber of me screamed to quit, to run, but then I saw my mother's pale face in the hospital bed and the bills stacked on our kitchen counter. Running wasn't an option.
I needed to secure this position whether I had the balls to or not.
I forced myself not to think of Adrian's threats or the hatred in Sophia's eyes. No matter what they, or anyone thought of me, I was going to do whatever it took not to let them win.
(Chelsea's POV)It was quarter past seven, when the office had already surrendered to shadows and the cleaning crew's vacuum hummed three floors below. I'd stayed late organizing Leonard's calendar for the following week, a task that should have taken twenty minutes but stretched into two hours because I kept reading the same entries twice.I had been heavily distracted. I found it unfortunately so hard to concentrate that I actually stayed late. Again. This time, being my fault for letting Bianca’s visit get to my head. I couldn't stop thinking about it. The way she had looked at me. The way the alarms in my head had gone off.She seemed like someone to never be messed with. Even though she was no longer married to Leonard, for some reasons, she had still scared the shit out of me. I had only made efforts to hide it.The sudden sound of approaching footsteps made me flinch. It was Leonard. He walked towards me and stopd in front of my desk."You're still here," he said in that low vo
(Leonard's POV)Unlike other people, Bianca never made an announcement. The general public passed through reception, provided their identities, waited for authorisation, and, if denied, accepted the response.Bianca passed through doors as if they were designed specifically for her. She didn't enquire about her greeting. She acted as though the room owed her a warm welcome. Jenna's speech sounded strained and a little out of breath because of this as she announced through the intercom that Bianca was here.My ex wife.I didn’t look up from the file on my desk. I kept reading, kept my pen moving, kept my posture calm. I could already envision her as vividly as if she were there in front of me, but the words in front of me blurred nonetheless. flawless hair. Excellent posture. Her eyes never met her flawless smile. I clenched my fingers around the pen till I felt like it would break."How did she manage to bypass security?" I enquired.Jenna answered, "She said you were expecting her."
(Chelsea's POV)I didn't get much sleep. I always saw him in front of my door when I closed my eyes. Beside my head, Adrian's fingers pressed against the wall. When he claimed that I still belonged to him, his voice trailed off. the assurance it contains. As if I were something he had lost, rather than someone who had left.My nerves were ragged by dawn. In an attempt to calm something inside of me that would not go away, I stood in front of the bathroom mirror for longer than usual and brushed my hair back harder than I should have. The drive down to work felt longer than usual. Every time the car stopped at a traffic light, my shoulders tightened, half expecting Adrian to show up like he had done the night before. When the doors finally opened and I stepped out in front of the big, tall building which waited ahead for me, relief washed through me so fast it almost made me dizzy. My mind kept replaying his words. You’re still mine. No one else can have you.I clenched my fists. He fe
(Chelsea's POV)The scent of burnt toast and old carpet shampoo filled the corridor outside my apartment. Every evening, the faint overhead light flickered and the building's wiring decided to warn everyone that it was tired, and the scent was the same. I'd been here long enough to know which stairwells were always drafty, which neighbours slammed their doors, and which floorboards squeaked.Nothing felt familiar that night. I felt cold holding my keys. My shoulder was cut by my bag. It was the kind of fatigue that sat in your bones, and my body was already hurting from the day.Leonard's fingerprint-like gaze, meetings, and my own anxiety whenever my phone buzzed were all things I had forced myself to endure. I had promised myself that after I got home, I would lock the door, take a shower, and act as though no one could get to me.Then I caught sight of him. Like he belonged there, Adrian leaned against the wall close to my door. He had his suit jacket open. For someone who seemed t
(Chelsea's POV)Another day to be at work arrived. I moved through Grey Properties liks I had worked there for years. I kept my face neutral anyway, even if my cheeks begged to be flushed when I thought of the kind of relationship Leonard and I seemed to be in now. But I needed to stay professional. That was my job.I didn't want to think about Leonard Grey’s hand between my thighs, my breath breaking on his fingers. Those thoughts stayed buried under work. I recited a few sentences in my head that should help.Do not look at him too long.Do not flinch when he comes close.Do not let him hear your heartbeat.Eventually, Leonard and I walked to the conference room where a meeting was to be held. We walked side by side, his strides closely matching mine. Like we were partners. Like we were a couple.People glanced up as we passed, and I began to overthink. As if I could feel them reading the tension between us like it was printed on my skin. The thought made my stomach churn.Conferenc
(Chelsea's POV)I Couldn't go home. Not yet. So I took a cab and got down once we came to a stop. By then I was in front of a Café. Far from Adrian. But I did not expect to see Sophia. Not that soon. And most especially not there. The café door chimed when I stepped inside, and the smell of coffee beans and warm sugar wrapped around me, surprisingly cooling my nerves. It was late afternoon already.I wasn’t here because I wanted to drink coffee. I just wanted somewhere quiet. And a place to sit. To let the storm inside me settle before going home. After what had happened with Adrian. After everything that we had talked about.I took two steps further and froze. My eyes landed on Sophia sitting by the window. My Sophia. Or at least the girl who used to be.Her hair fell over one shoulder, her lips glossy, like always. She wore a pale dress that caught the light and she sat staring into space like she was deep in thought. I immediately wondered what she was doing here alone. It was unli
(Chelsea's POV)I should have walked out right then. Instead I stayed. I don't know why I stayed. As if my manners refused to go into non existence in moments I needed them to. There was not a bit of my manners or respect Adrian deserved. I didn't want to give him any of it.“I said I wanted to tal
(Leonard's POV)I came to the club to drink as usual while I tried to forget all the mistakes I'd made in my life and foolish things I'd done which still haunted me every now and then. But there was one thing I couldn't erase despite the whiskey which burned sharp down my throat. The thought of Che
(Chelsea's POV)My breath stopped the sooner I kept staring at the dance floor, staring past it and then I saw Leonard sitting at a table, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled to his forearms, relaxing in his chair like he was sitting on a throne. But that wasn't the part that hit me.
(Chelsea's POV)The door handle turned and it felt like my nostrils had stopped collecting oxygen. Every muscle in my body snapped tight. Leonard’s hand was still around my waist and I realized the sudden doom I was about to face.He was coming in. Adrian was coming in. And any moment from now, he
