Author's Pov

Ianthe stepped off the bed, half-asleep, half-awake. She took a few steps forward—stopped.

It was foggy, so foggy that she could barely see her fingers in front of her face. Where... where had the fog come from?

She flinched suddenly as she felt a kick to her stomach.

The baby. The baby....

Another kick had her wincing and grabbing on to her stomach. Then another kick.

“Stop, stop, stop,” she chanted against the kicks and the pain.

The kicks stopped, as if the baby could hear her.

She sighed in relief and wiped her suddenly sweaty forehead with the back of her hand.

She peered into the fog again, and something propelled her to take another step forward, deeper into the fog.

She thought she saw movement. “Who's there?” She asked. “Come out now.”

It would be one of those stupid maids who were constantly flitting about. The thought of them rummaging through her baby things filled her with violent rage. They were getting too bold.

“You have one last chance!” she called out

“Sorry, Alpha Roman, I can’t seem to find anything wrong with Lady Ianthé.”“I told you all — I’m fine!” Ianthé raged on the bed. I stood beside the bed, hands clasped in front of me, watching silently. This was the fourth doctor Roman had brought in to check on the mother of his unborn child.Something in me smiled at the stark desperate look on his face. It wasn’t just stark and desperate, it bordered on insanity. He was tired.“What about her pregnancy?” he asked, voice hollow and hoarse. The doctor sighed. “The baby is fine, thankfully. I have to take my leave now. Please let me know if any changes occur.”The doctor took his leave, but I watched Roman from the corner of my eye and just a little thrill of satisfaction shot through me. I bit down hard on my lips to stop a laugh.I watched as he ran a hand through his hair, fingers trembling. The strands stood on end, a messy halo to his madness. His eyes darted over Ianthe like she might vanish into ash if he so much as blinked.

  • Ex-Breeder's Return for Vengeance    Sacrifices

Serene's Pov “You.”I stopped dead on my track, barely breathing. He hadn't changed much. He still had the same cruel eyes, the same angry face.I made my voice meek and quiet. “Hello, Master.” I bowed my head, eyes diverted from his. I hadn't expected close proximity to him and despite the fact that Agnar had allied my fears of being discovered, my heart still pounded heavily.“Your sister has disappeared from the dungeon.”I gasped at the news and forced tears into my eyes as I looked up and fell to my knees.“No. Please, Master, find he—”The slap came without warning and I saw stars.“Get up.” He pulled me roughly by my hair and jerked me back up. “Your family is gone, too. Who do you have working for you?”“No one, Master! I swear!”His hold on my hair tightened and he dragged me down the stairs with him like I was nothing more than a rag doll. My feet stumbled, scraping against stone as we got outside and headed to the guards' quaters, but I didn’t cry out. “You’ll tell me,”

  • Ex-Breeder's Return for Vengeance    The Ol' Switcharoo

Serene's PovThe uniform pinched at my ribs, but I barely felt it. I stared into the cracked mirror, searching for a girl who no longer existed. Daphne stared back. She had to. My life depended on it.The wooden door creaked open, and my roommate entered.“What are ye still doing here?” she asked as she saw me. She was round, short with an accent that came straight from the human continent. Her mother was human, her father one of ours who had left them shortly after she was born. She had made a journey to try and find out who her father was and had ended up here. She never left again.“Staring at yourself in the mirror that long," she demanded, hands on her hips, "are ye headin’ to a feckin' fashion show, or is your lad comin’ to drag ye off by the liver?”I ignored her the way Daphne would have and turned towards the door. Behind me, I heard her huff.“Never says a word to a soul, that one.”My first duty was doing the laundry, so I headed there with my face down, silent and ignorin

  • Ex-Breeder's Return for Vengeance    Spell

Serene's PovI watched as Agnar slammed her against the wall, hand tight around her throat.“Who are you?”She choked against his grip, unable to speak.“Answer me,” his voice was calm and sure, like that of someone who promised death and delivered it.“Wh-what do you m-m-mean?” she managed to say, eyes bulging. “Le-le-let me go.”Instead, his grip tightened. “I won't ask you again. Where is she?”Daphne managed to turn her head towards my hiding place, her eyes pleading for help, and I knew I had to step out.It was true that the spell had work, but I felt disappointed that Agnar had been able to figure it out.I stepped out from my hiding place. “Agnar.”He turned his head towards me, his face still a mask of calmness and death.“What is this?” he asked, not breaking his hold against her throat.“I — I got a spell for me to switch bodies with her.”He looked me over slowly, from head to toe. “You're still you,” he said pointedly.“Yes. I only just wanted to see if you could really t

  • Ex-Breeder's Return for Vengeance    Near The Ocean

SERENE'S POV I stopped dead in my tracks and tried hard to wipe the fear away from my face. The longer we stared at each other, the more I realized I had seen him before. My eyes flickered to the necklace around his neck, and his identity came back to me—he was the man who had saved me during my encounter with the NightMarchers. There was no mistaking him. He had the same swirling patterns of tattoos and the same tooth pendant. His hair, thick and dark, was tied back loosely, the strands swaying with the breeze like seaweed under the tide. His eyes were brown flecked with gold, unreadable.“You do not heed warnings, do you?”“You have the wrong person,” I lied.“Not just stubborn, but a liar as well.”I let the accusations go unheeded. “What do you want?”What do I want? I wanted death and blood, the kind where justice came not with mercy but with fire and bone. Before I could reply, he said, “Come.”I followed him down the trail and deeper into the community. There were small house
