Lucas kicked open the door of Clarissa's bedroom with his foot and carried Clarissa into the room. The light from the bedside lamp painted the walls in a golden hue. It was quiet in the room.

He walked over to the bed and lowered her gently, her head sank into the pillow, and he adjusted it beneath her carefully.

Clarissa blinked up at him, her eyes were half-lidded from exhaustion. "You know I have legs, right?"

Lucas's lips tugged into a small smile. He reached down and brushed a loose strand of hair off her face. "I know. But tonight, your legs are officially off duty."

She gave him a look, but it was hard to keep a straight face when her body already melted into the mattress. "I'm not a feather," she muttered.

Lucas raised an eyebrow at her. "No, you're not. You're heavier."

Clarissa squinted her eyes. "Wow. Romantic." She scoffed loudly.

He grinned. "I meant... you're more like a very precious brick."

"A brick?!" She asked ridiculously.

Lucas clicked his tongue again and looked at his diamond wristwatch. The room was quiet except for the soft tick-tock of the clock on the wall. The living room was spacious, Everything smelled like fresh roses and rich perfume.Lucas sat on one end of the long leather couch, legs crossed, back straight. He wore a sharp black suit with a silver chain running from the collar down to the chest. His white sleeve shirt underneath was spotless. His hair was curly and well-shaped, like he had just stepped out of a salon.Across from him sat, Justin. He also wore a black outfit, but his style was more relaxed. No chains. No glitter. Just a clean, matte-black tuxedo and watch. His beard was trimmed and his lips were tight in a serious line.Lucas glanced at him. “Any word on Easton?” he asked, voice smooth but cold.Justin gave a short nod. “Yes. I did some digging. He’s going to be there tonight.”Lucas narrowed his eyes. “At the Manhattan show?”Justin nodded again. “A lady called Mia Brown,

Easton dragged on his tie as he climbed out of his white Lamborghini. His head felt heavy and his body was weak. A bottle of whiskey was in his hand. He took one last gulp before tossing the bottle to the ground. It rolled under the car and shattered. He didn’t care.It was late in the evening when he got back from the bar he lounged in after clocking out of work. His mood has been totally out of fix since he got the news of his demotion. He looked at the car and scoffed.“If I’m demoted, they’ll take this too,” he muttered to himself. “They’ll take everything.”He stumbled toward his front door. His steps were lazy and tired. His mind was racing. His hands were shaking. The words from Justin’s mouth were still fresh in his ears. A demotion? After all he had done?He pushed the door open and walked into his house. The silence inside only made him feel worse. Since Clarissa moved out, there was a particular feeling the house had worn—a very disturbing one and the warmth has sort of det

Lucas glared at Clarissa. "You shouldn't poke your nose into my business, Darling." Clarissa bit her lower lip, the 'Darling' didn't sound endearing this time around. It was more like a warning to her that his boundaries can never be crossed. He won't and can't allow her come near—-she was meant to be at a distance. There was no room for her to be any where close. The awkwardness took a sharper turn when Lucas turned to his grandmother and ground out. "And you, Granny. Stop pulling this little stunts. Else, you might have to go back to your home sooner than you'd want to." There were no traces of smile or laughter on his face. His eyes were blank, but his gaze on them made the women want to crawl into some rock and hid. Mrs Chen sucked in a deep breath, hoping she was invincible enough for Lucas not to notice her. Granny Reed hummed. "Fine." She muttered softly before taking a sip from her tea again. An uneasy silence flooded the dining hall. The rest of the meal was awkward. No o

Clarissa didn't push any further, knowing it was a loose game to question the old woman about her grandson. It just seemed like she was the only one left out on the tea.Granny Reed stood up from the chair and walked over to the living room again to catch up on her favorite morning show.Mrs Chen walked over to the dining hall and began placing food on the table.Plates of scrambled eggs, pancakes, dumplings, and stir-fried vegetables lined up one by one on the long table.Clarissa blinked. "Is someone coming over?""No," Mrs Chen replied. "Just family."Clarissa smiled and looked around. Her smile faded a little when she spotted the time on the clock. It was close to 9:30AM.She glanced at Mrs Chen. "Wait... where's Lucas?"Granny Reed didn't look up, her gaze was fixated on the broad TV.Mrs Chen froze by the juice tray but Clarissa added. "He's not usually this late for work."Mrs Chen cleared her throat. "He... he probably slept late last night. He can clock in whenever he wants,

Lucas walked into his room and shut the door behind him. The click was soft, but the air in the room felt heavier now. He didn’t turn on the lights. The moonlight coming through the wide windows was enough. He walked over to the window slowly, pulled the curtains aside, and stood there. The city lights illuminated the roads. He pulled out his phone and stared at the screen for a second before dialing. It didn’t take long before the call was connected.“Boss Reed.” Justin’s voice came quickly, like he was already waiting. “Everything alright?”“No,” Lucas said simply. His tone was low and Calm, but sharp like a blade. “I need something handled. Now.”Justin didn’t ask questions. “Tell me.”Lucas’s fingers tapped lightly on the glass window panel. He narrowed his eyes at the streetlights. “Easton Maddox.”There was a pause from Justin’s end. “That’s the one connected to Clarissa, right? Her ex-husband.”Lucas’s jaw twitched. “Yes. That one.”“What about him?”Lucas’s voice dropped and b
