MONIQUE

I woke to the pale wash of morning and the heat of another body in the guest bed.

For a few seconds I didn’t move. My mind was still caught between sleep and the ache in my muscles, between the locked door I had trusted and the man who had found a way through it anyway. Then the details arrived all at once.

The bare stretch of his shoulder.

The sheet tangled around our hips.

The faint sting on my neck.

The memory of my own hand catching the hem of his coat.

Both of us were naked.

MAXWELL I went back at dusk, as I had said I would. No breakfast table. No bag on a shoulder. No mother in pearls on my step. I told Cecil I would be late and I did not ask Monique to come. She would not have come. I would not have let the Lohr house see her as an escort.Elise opened the door herself. She had changed out of the afternoon’s performance and into something softer, as if evening could rewrite the threshold.“You came,” she said. “Laurel thought you wouldn’t. I told her you don’t break promises to him.”“Where is he?”“Upstairs. I kept him awake. He asked if Daddy’s house was angry.”I looked at her until she stepped aside.Ambrose was on the playroom rug in pajamas, a book open upside down beside him. When he saw me he did the glance first—door, then me—but it was shorter than at breakfast.“Daddy.”“I told you I’d come.”I sat on the floor.Elise lingered.“You can leave the door open,” I said. “You don’t need to stand in it.”She left more slowly than last time. Her p

MONIQUEThe gate phone rang in the early afternoon.Cecil answered in the hall. I heard the change in her voice before I heard the names.“Mrs. Lohr is here,” she said, appearing at the kitchen doorway. “Miss Elise as well. They have the boy.”Maxwell was already moving.“I’ll take it,” he told her. “Keep them at the door until I get there.”He looked at me once.I had asked for this. 'You meet them at the door. Not me.'I stayed in the kitchen long enough to put my hands flat on the counter and breathe. Then I walked as far as the foyer arch and stopped where I could see without being the first face they received.Maxwell opened the door.Laurel stood on the step in cream and pearls, as if this were still her son’s house to enter. Elise was just behind her, Ambrose on her hip though he was old enough to walk. A small bag hung from Elise’s shoulder. Not large. Large enough to make a point.“Maxwell,” Laurel said. “We won’t have this conversation through a gate.”“Then we’ll have it he

MONIQUEMaxwell came home before noon. That was how I knew the morning had gone badly. Work did not spit him out this early unless a room in that other house had closed around his throat.I was in the kitchen with tea I had not touched. Monday’s transfer still sat under my ribs. Ellie’s name. Elise’s laugh. Ambrose looking up at me as if I had changed the rules of a game he had only just learned.Maxwell stopped in the doorway.“They had breakfast ready,” he said. “Laurel. Elise. Ambrose. I was the missing plate.”I set the cup down.“You went.”“My mother called and said the boy was already there. That isn’t a request in that house.” He dragged a hand through his hair. “Elise told her you refused him. Laurel used the word inconvenience. They asked—through him—if he could come to this house.”The kitchen went very quiet.“What did you say?”“Not today.” Maxwell’s eyes held mine. “I told him Daddy’s house is quiet. I told them I would visit him there. I did not give them this address.”

MAXWELLLaurel called before seven.“Breakfast,” she said. “Don’t argue. Ambrose is already here.”That was not an invitation. It was a formation.I dressed and drove to the Lohr house with Monique still asleep behind a locked guest-room door. I had not told her where I was going. Telling her would have turned the morning into another negotiation about doorways and witnesses. Not telling her would cost me later. I chose later. The dining room was already arranged when I arrived.Laurel at the head.Elise at the side with a soft sweater and red-rimmed eyes.Ambrose in a chair too tall for him, a cushion under him, toast untouched.Derrick’s place was empty. Of course it was. He called things settled and then let the women fight the mess into a shape he could sign.“Sit,” Laurel said.I sat across from Ambrose, not beside Elise. The boy looked at me, then at Elise, then at his plate.“Eat, baby,” Elise murmured. “Daddy came.”Laurel did not waste time on tea.“Elise told me Monique refu

ELISEHe left me standing in the foyer with my hand still warm from his sleeve.Maxwell had come. That should have been enough. He had gone to the playroom. Ambrose had leaned on his knee. I had watched from farther than I wanted and called it a victory in my head before he opened his mouth again. Then he had looked at my hand until I dropped it.*There is no our side that uses him as a messenger.*The door shut on the sentence.I smiled for the staff until they scattered. I smiled until Ambrose was taken upstairs for a bath he would not want. Then I went into the nearest empty room and let the smile fall off my face like something cheap.Confirmed blood.A kneel in the study.A Monday visit. And still he had spoken to me like I was a problem in the hallway instead of the mother of his son.Monique had done this. She had sat with Ambrose once, played the gentle doctor, then shoved him to another woman the moment the paper made him real. Conflict of interest. Procedure. Pretty words fo

MAXWELLI did not go as Elise’s witness.I told myself that the whole drive.Monique’s sentence sat in the passenger seat with me. *Go as his father. Do not go as her witness against me.* The clinic was already closed. The story was already moving toward Laurel. If I stayed home, Elise would write the evening for everyone. If I went there furious, I would give her the scene she wanted.I called the Lohr house and said I was coming for Ambrose. Not for a meeting. Not for my parents. For the boy.Elise was in the foyer again. She had changed her clothes since the clinic. Softer colors. The look of a mother who had been wounded in public.“You see?” she said as soon as the door shut. “I told you. She threw him away. He asked for her in the car. He doesn’t understand why Auntie Monique—”“Stop using that name in front of him.”Elise blinked.“That is what he calls her.”“That is what you taught him to call her.” I kept my voice low. The stairs were close. Children’s hearing was closer. “W
