SLOANE

“What the hell are you? Killian, don't listen to him.” My eyes glued to Nika, a small smug smile hanging at the side of her lips.

It must be her. She had literally pushed me off the stairs, there was no length she wouldn't stoop to just to make sure she had Killian to herself.

“Don't listen to me?” The doctor cocked his head to one side, a mischievous glint spreading across his face. “Tell your husband that if anything happens to our baby, I won't let him off so easily.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” I struggled to push his hands off my waist, though I regretted it immediately. He had been massaging just beneath my belly, curbing the pain.

As soon as his hands left my abdomen, I bit down on my lip to stop myself from screaming. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I stretched my hands out, beckoning to Killian.

He stared at me in disgust, disappointment spreading across his face.

“Killian, I really didn't cheat on you. You can check! Investigate…” I took a deep breath, trying to stabilize myself as the loud ringing in my head just wouldn't go away.

“There's already proof, and you still dare to talk? What do you take me for, Sloane?” He yelled.

He was angry.

Angry?!

I was the one that was going through the pain and the one caught up in this confusing moment and he still had the nerve to be angry.

He was flaunting Nika around and he had the guts to be angry.

Suddenly, the irritation spreading in my chest overshadowed the pain coursing through every vein in my body.

“Killian!! How long have we been married? 4 years! In your 4 years, do you not know my character? Do you not know what I'm capable of? I don't know what's going on here but that paternity test is definitely not mine!”

My voice was a little louder than I had spoken in a while.

In fact, I had totally forgotten my voice could be that loud.

The only other time I had talked like that was at my brother's funeral when I found out that Dad would rather hand the company over to an outsider than to me.

That was the last time I had ever thrown a fit.

Killian had made sure I never had anything to complain about or raise my voice.

Yet? My once sweet husband was the one putting his hands on me and raising his voice without trying to check if I was the victim here.

“And you,” I turned sharply to the doctor, “I don't know who paid you for this. I don't know what you think you'll get from this but you are a doctor and this is a disgrace to your profession.” He looked stunned, leaning a few inches backwards like he was trying to get a full glimpse of my face.

“Killian! Take your little mistress and get out of my room. If you lay your hands on me again, I will call the police on you and I mean it.” I used the back of my palm to wipe my tears as I struggled to force air into my lungs.

“Don't address Nika that way, she's not a slut like you.” Killian shot, and my eyes widened like they would shoot out of their sockets.

“She’s not? I can hardly agree with you. After all, she's currently carrying the child of another woman's husband. She's not just a mistress, she's what people call an absolute whore.” I retorted.

“Sloane, you bit—” His hands were folded into fists, he was going to hit me again.

I shut my eyes tightly, waiting for the impact but when I didn't feel anything for a few seconds, I opened my eyes.

The doctor had caught Killian's hand, glaring at him like he was going to bore holes in him.

“I understand if she doesn't want to go public yet or acknowledge me as the father of her baby, but that doesn't give you any right to lay a hand on her as well. If you don't keep your fists to yourself, this might get really bloody.” I was about to retort when he beckoned to one of the nurses outside the door.

“Patricia? Get security.” His voice bellowed with authority.

“Security? Who do you think you are? I can and will get you fired for this.” Killian yelled when the security rushed in and bound his hands.

“Throw this scum out.” The doctor ordered, and they immediately obeyed, dragging Killian and Nika out.

This was the first time since I've known Killian that someone dared stand up to him.

But then, it was deception, acting or whatever you might want to call it.

“Tell me, how much did she pay you?” I queried immediately they were out of the ward.

“What?”

“There's no need to play dumb, doctor…” I trailed off, staring down at his name tag. “Rhys. Doctor Rhys. I know what Nika is capable of. I know she must have paid you to come in and claim my child just to sow discord between me and my husband. How much did she pay? I'll double it if you tell the truth to Killian.”

I offered.

He was silent for a moment and then chuckled, just slightly, almost like he was mocking me.

“Lady, that is no way to talk to someone who just saved your life.” He blurted out and my eyes flashed.

“Saved my life? What the—”

“Oh, you'd rather he kept hitting you in your belly? Need I remind you that your child is fragile? You could easily lose it!” He warned, his eyes held nothing but pure anger and disgust for me.

“And besides? You cheated on your husband yourself. Stop throwing paranoia everywhere. If he kept hitting you and something happened to you, the hospital would be in deep trouble, so consider this saving face for the hospital.”

“Never seen a couple cheating on themselves simultaneously, you're both a load of crap.”

I opened my mouth to say something but no words came forth.

I never cheated on Killian. Never. The paternity report must be fake. It must be!

“You don't know me, you don't know my life! You have no right to talk to me that way.” I yelled back, my eyes burning.

“You're right.” He said straightforwardly and then halted in his steps, turning to meet my gaze. “Throw that lavender flowers out. It messes with me.” He ordered one of the attendants and they nodded almost immediately.

My phone immediately lit up and I picked it up. It was an email.

Not just any email. It was sent to my old email. I hadn't opened this mail in 4 years since I left home.

I immediately clicked on the pop up, my eyes scanning the contents immediately.

“It took me a whole lot to find you this time, Sloane.”

CHAPTER 13SLOANEWhen I got back to my mother’s room, I pushed the door open quietly and stepped inside, immediately fixing my expression into a calmer one when I noticed my mother awake. Her pale face turned slightly toward me and even though she looked weak against the hospital pillows, her eyes still carried the same sharpness I remembered growing up with.“You took long enough.” Her voice came out dry.Relief flooded through me so quickly that I nearly burst into tears.“You’re awake.” I whispered, rushing toward her bedside.“Yeah.” She muttered weakly before her gaze shifted past me toward the door. “Who was that man outside?”I slowly adjusted the tray of food in my hands and sat beside her carefully. “Which man?”“The tall one glaring like the hospital owed him money.” She replied flatly. “Was that your husband?”I let out a short breath and looked down at the soup I was stirring. “Unfortunately.”My mother was silent for a moment before speaking again. “He looks arrogant.”I

SLOANEThe hospital cafeteria was one floor down, and I had barely registered the distance between my mother’s ward and the elevator before exhaustion started to creep into my bones. Everything had been a blur since we arrived, machines, doctors, insurance forms, Rhys Storm’s unsettling presence hovering around every corner like he belonged both in my past and in places he had no right to be.But hunger didn’t care about emotional chaos. My mother needed food, and I needed to keep moving before my mind caught up with everything threatening to break me apart.I stepped out of the stairwell door, adjusting my hospital pass at my wrist when I saw Killian and Nika. They stood near the corridor leading to the oncology wing, too composed, too intentional to be just passing through. Killian’s posture was straight, his expression unreadable at first glance, but I knew him too well not to notice the tension in his jaw. Nika stood slightly behind him, her hand resting lightly on her stomach

KILLIANThe meeting had dragged on for nearly three hours, and by the time the fifth board member began repeating a point that had already been discussed twice, irritation sat heavily beneath my skin.Usually, I would have tolerated it, usually I had patience for businessBut lately, it’s been a different thing altogether. Ever since the scandal surrounding my marriage exploded publicly, everything had become unbearable. Investors were whispering, shareholders were asking questions indirectly, and media outlets kept dancing around headlines they were too careful to publish outright.Killian Ardenian’s wife involved in infidelity scandal. The mere thought darkened my mood instantly.I leaned back in my chair silently while one of the executives continued presenting quarterly projections across the screen. Nobody in the room dared acknowledge the tension hanging over me, but I noticed the cautious glances anyway. They all knew and what irritated me most wasn’t even the cheating itself.

SLOANEThe moment we arrived at Norcane International Medical Center, everything became chaos.Nurses moved briskly around my mother’s wheelchair while attendants pushed open double doors leading deeper into the private oncology wing. The sharp scent of antiseptic filled my lungs as I walked beside her bed with trembling fingers wrapped tightly around the rail.“Mum?” I called softly, brushing her cold hand. “We’re here now.”Her eyes fluttered weakly, exhaustion etched into every fragile inch of her face, and guilt clawed viciously through my chest all over again. The flight had drained her badly.I walked ahead speaking with one of the administrative staff while my father remained beside me in complete silence. His expression looked carved from stone as always, but I noticed the faint tightness in his jaw every time my mother coughed. The nurses finally wheeled her into a private ward and immediately began hooking her up to machines while another doctor reviewed the medical files Vel

CHAPTER 9SLOANE“Did you really divorce your husband, Sloane?”I stared at Dominic silently after the question left his mouth, my fingers tightening unconsciously around my mother’s frail hand. There it was, the curiosity, the judgment and the need to know exactly how badly my life had fallen apart.A humorless smile tugged at my lips as I slowly looked away from him.“You’ve gotten quite bold over the years,” I muttered quietly. “Asking about my private life like you actually have the right.”His brows furrowed slightly. “That’s not what I meant.”“Then what exactly did you mean?” I snapped, exhaustion creeping sharply into my voice. “Because unless I suddenly missed the part where we became close, I don’t remember owing you explanations.”Dominic remained silent for a few seconds before sighing quietly. “I wasn’t trying to upset you.”“Well, congratulations,” I answered bitterly. “You failed.”The room fell quiet again and I could feel him staring at me, probably trying to figure ou
