Logan’s POV

“Can I have one more piece of cake, Daddy?”

I smiled at Leo’s sweet face, smeared in icing, but shook my head.

“That’s up to, Mommy,” I told him. “It’s her birthday cake. What do you think, Willow? Can he have…”

My voice trailed off as I realized that Willow wasn’t there.

“Did she go to the bathroom?” I asked.

Beatrice shrugged. “I don’t know,” she replied. “I actually don’t know how long she’s been gone. We were so engaged in our conversation.”

“Mommy left a while ago,” Leo said, reaching for the cake.

“She did?” I asked, confused. I wondered how long ‘a while’ was. How had I not noticed that Willow was gone?

“Did I upset her?” Beatrice asked, a look of concern on her face. “With our request? I didn’t mean to.”

I smiled at Beatrice. It was so sweet of her to be concerned about Willow.

“Maybe we should just drop it. I mean, the last thing I want to do is upset my sister. We can find another way.”

“Nonsense,” I told her, shaking my head. “Willow is just sulking. She’ll get over it. She’ll realize that this is best for everyone. She’s just jealous because you’re going to get a new child and she’s not. Don’t worry about it.”

I placed my hand over Beatrice’s and gave it a little squeeze. I was doing my best to assure Beatrice that Willow would come around. Deep down, though, I was very disappointed in Willow.

Beatrice was trying to adopt a child. A helpless orphan who needed a mother. I admired her kindness and selfishness and I told her so.

Willow was just being stubborn.

In any case, it was late, much later than I realized. So I settled the bill and we all wandered outside.

“Thanks again for the flowers,” Beatrice smiled at me and looked up at me from under her thick, black lashes, her green eyes shining under the streetlights.

“My pleasure,” I said, keeping it casual.

While we waited for her Uber, Beatrice looked at me, a smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth.

“I still think about that kiss… back in college,” she said.

“Yeah… that kiss was… um…” I stammered, caught off guard.

She bent down slightly to Leo. “Next time, Auntie will take you to the amusement park,” she said, brushing his shoulder.

As she leaned forward, I couldn’t help but notice a hint of cleavage peeking from her dress. My throat went dry for a second.

The Uber pulled up. Beatrice glanced over her shoulder, then nudged Zoe lightly. “Say goodbye to Uncle,” she prompted.

Zoe looked at me hesitantly, her small fingers clutching Beatrice’s hand. She wouldn’t speak.

“Maybe she’s just shy,” I said with a soft smile. “Kids can be a little afraid of strangers sometimes.”

“Thanks again for a lovely evening,” Beatrice said, sliding into the backseat with Zoe.

“You’re welcome,” I replied, closing the car door.

I felt unsettled all the way home, but I couldn’t put my finger on why.

Beatrice’s face kept flashing in my mind. That brief glimpse… the curve of her dress… the way she leaned over.

My dick betrayed me. I cursed under my breath and glanced down.

Leo was asleep in the back seat, his chest rising and falling with even breaths.

I shook my head, trying to shove the image away. What the hell was wrong with me?

Back at home, Willow still hadn’t returned. I put Leo to bed and then sat in the empty living room, waiting for Willow.

My mind wandered to the Willow I’d known before we got married. She’d been so vibrant, so full of life.

And so fucking sexy, I couldn’t get enough of her.

The Willow I knew now though was a far cry from the pre-marriage Willow. She never dressed up anymore. Hell, she hardly even wore makeup. All she talked about was boring housewife stuff, like how to incorporate kale into Leo’s food without him knowing, or the details of some stupid PTA meeting, or paint colors for the living room.

Eggshell or cream?

She’d deliberated over those two colors for a week.

What the hell did it matter? It was just paint. They were both white as far as I was concerned. Eggshell. White. Who cares?

My mind turned to Beatrice.

She was nothing like Willow. They were close in age, but Beatrice was still dazzling, still exciting, still put together. She took care of herself, wore high heels, got her hair done.

And Beatrice had a career. She understood how taxing it was to run a company. I was exhausted when I got home from work. Willow claimed that she was always exhausted too.

But from what?

Making cookies and grocery shopping? Choosing a stupid paint color for the walls was a far cry from making important, corporate decisions all day.

Beatrice got that.

Jesus, why did my mind keep wandering back to Beatrice?

Seeing Willow and Beatrice side by side tonight at the restaurant was jarring. Beatrice looked like she just stepped right off the cover of a fashion magazine.

And Willow?

She looked like she came straight from Leo’s soccer practice, threw on a frumpy dress, and smeared on some lip gloss. Where was the effort?

A strange mixture of emotions welled up inside of me. I didn’t know what to make of it. I could hear Leo upstairs playing on his iPad, even though I’d already put him to bed.

He knew he’d get away with it because Mom wasn’t around. He was probably secretly thrilled that Willow wasn’t home yet.

Honestly… it almost felt like this house didn’t even need Willow.

Willow’s POVHanging up the phone, I held it in my hand, frozen to the spot for a moment.“What is it?” Adonis asked, coming towards me. The morning sunlight flooded through the window, marking the beginning of a beautiful day. That didn’t feel right to me. It should be a gray morning, with drizzling rain, not a bright and sunny morning.“They’re in the county jail,” I said, my voice high and tight.“What?” Adonis balked.“Luigi said they were transferred there earlier this morning. He said….the charges were…substantial.”“Why would they transfer them to jail? They don’t have any evidence? This isn’t right,” Adonis shook his head.“Unless…” Jay interrupted. We both turned to him. He sighed heavily.“Unless what?” Adonis asked.Jay bit his lip. “I could be wrong, but, maybe they have evidence? Maybe they have something…”“That’s impossible,” I said. “Luigi and Logan did nothing wrong.”“Look, I know this is hard to hear,” Jay said. “But they have a protocol they have to follow. They can

Willow’s POVStanding on the sidewalk, watching the police car take Logan and Luigi away, my heart raced. It had all happened so fast, and I was still processing. Behind me, inside the ballroom, I knew that people were gossiping about the scandal that had just transpired.Adonis and Jay appeared beside me. Reaching for my hand, Adonis squeezed it.“We’ll sort this out,” he said, his voice steady.“What am I going to tell the children?” I asked. I could see their little faces in my mind’s eye when they woke up tomorrow morning. They’d want to know where Luigi was. What could I possibly say to them? How could I explain to them that Luigi was in jail?“Oh Adonis,” I said, turning myself into his chest. He wrapped his arms around me and held me for a beat.“Don’t cry,” he soothed. “This is all just a misunderstanding. Luigi is one of the most honest people I know. He’d never do something illegal. This is just Beatrice messing with us, yet again.”Beatrice. She was behind this, right? I mea

Luigi’s POVThe entire room broke out into loud chatter. Some people stood up from their seats. In complete shock, I found myself standing at the podium, my hands cuffed behind me.“What are you doing?” I asked, as the police officer tightened the cuffs. “I don’t understand.”He told me what I was being arrested for, but I could barely process his words. Something about the grapes I’d used for Wine Not. Something about them not having FDA approval. That wasn’t true though. Sasha had shown us the approval papers herself. Obviously I’d asked if they were approved. I would never use a contraband substance. I would never do anything illegal.Willow rushed up to the podium, her eyes wild.“Uncuff him,” she said. “There’s been a mistake.”“Stand back, Miss,” one of the officers said.“There’s been a misunderstanding,” Logan said, stepping forward.“Who are you?” the officer who had handcuffed me asked.“I’m his business partner,” Logan told him. “We have the documents to prove that the grape

  • Ex and Son Beg, But I Never Turn Back   Chapter 432: Under Arrest

Luigi’s POVA hush fell over the crowd of guests, all seated at their elegant tables, as the police filed in. Squinting in the bright spotlights, I shielded my eyes with my hand.I heard a few gasps from the crowd. What were the police doing here? They stood at the back of the room, roughly five in total, in a line, their eyes scanning the room. These were the wine awards. This was a prestigious, elegant affair. The unexpected presence of the police sent a ripple of shock through the crowd. Everyone remained frozen, unsure of what was happening. Why would the police show up at this event? Had someone done something? Who? And what? That was the expression on everyone’s faces.Overhead, the chandelier glittered, casting bits of light all over the room. The background music still played softly. One of the event managers approached the police officers, rubbing her hands together anxiously.“Can I help you?” she asked, as all eyes remained locked on the police officers. The police looked pa

  • Ex and Son Beg, But I Never Turn Back   Chapter 431: Alone and Afraid

Third Person POVThe way that Enzo looked at Sasha made her skin crawl. Realizing that Ava wasn’t home and that they were alone, panic swept over Sasha. She knew she was in a dangerous situation and her heart raced.Enzo stood up just as Sasha twisted her wrist away from him. She made a mad dash for the door, but he was fast and caught her around the waist. Spinning her, he pushed her up against the book shelf. It pressed into her back as he leaned in to her ear and whispered:“Relax. I won’t hurt you. Not unless you want me to.”For a moment, Sasha wondered if one of the maids or the butler would help her. If she yelled out, maybe they’d come. But she highly doubted it. One of the maids had put drugs in her tea when she first arrived. She had the sinking feeling that the maids were all loyal to Enzo.Besides, it was late at night and there was only a skeletal staff at this late hour. Which meant there were less people to hear her even if she did cry out.“Please don’t do this,” Sasha

Third Person POV“It’s done,” Sasha said, slowly closing her computer.Enzo sat across from her, a sly smile on his face. He lifted his eyebrow.“Are you sure?” he asked.Sasha nodded, avoiding Enzo’s piercing gaze. Her stomach turned. Her palms were sweaty. She literally felt sick. Still shaky, she moved her laptop off her lap and placed it on the table, swallowing hard. That was it. The job was done. She’d submitted the papers to the proper authorities. Any moment now, they’d open the files and see that the grapes Luigi had been using were not FDA approved. Quite the contrary, they were banned, due to their unique molecular structure. There were too many unknowns with the hybrid grapes. They hadn’t undergone the proper FDA testing. They could pose a potential health risk to the public. That’s what the FDA would claim, even though Sasha knew better. The grapes she’d created were a far cry from anything dangerous. They wouldn’t hurt or harm anyone. But even still, she knew that they’d
