And to think, for a while, I thought he was better than Rodrigo. Carlos and I were in a relationship, and if it wasn't for the fact that he didn't want more children while I did, we might have remained together. But now all I could think of was how fortunate I was to have dodged a bullet.

"Someone here?" A voice caused me to quickly dry my eyes. Then she walked in; it was one of the lawyers. I believe she dealt with taxes or something. "Oh, I thought I heard someone. Ms. Sterling," she remarked.

"Hi." We hadn't spoken before, so I had no idea why she was suddenly speaking to me.

She approached the mirror, and I moved aside to allow her space. "I heard what happened.”

"Excuse me?"

“Mr. Carlos emailed everyone. He said he had to let you go because you were messing with a client."

"Oh." I did not expect him to make such an announcement.

"Yes, it is bad. Everyone is talking."

"At least they have something to talk about," I remarked, throwing away the tissue I'd used to wipe my tears.

Parker looked serious. I calmed myself down as she asked me to breathe in—and once I was calm enough, I finally spoke, carefully choosing my words. “You need to tell me everything.”“He looked like me, so I asked. He told me everything. We decided to get a DNA test, and we were right. He is my father. Mommy—”“He left, Parker!”“Without saying goodbye?” She stood up and attempted to walk toward the door, but I stopped her.“You're not stepping out that door, young lady. Do you know what you've just done?”“Mommy, all I did was find the truth. Honestly, I should be the one mad at you for keeping me in the dark.”“Oh, you should be mad at me?” I stood up, stunned by how ridiculous she sounded. “Honey, I did what I did to protect you.”“Oh, I see. So I was right then?”“Parker—”“No, I don't want to hear it. I’d like to be alone now.” She walked to the couch and sat down, crossing her arms over her chest and turning her back to me.“In my house?”“I don't know—would you prefer I go to my

Well, I didn’t seem to know what to do now—Rodrigo came out of one of the bedrooms in my penthouse, and Aaliyah wasn’t someone who could be convinced otherwise.“I knew it. I knew it,” she snapped.“Aaliyah, what are you doing here?” Rodrigo asked, and I just stood still, watching it all unfold.“Yes, Mom, what are you doing here?” Anthony added, walking toward them. Maggie had come over to stand by me and Carlos now. I placed my hand on Maggie’s arm to calm her.“No—you two don’t get to ask me that. What the hell are you doing here?”“I had a playdate with Parker. And where I go isn’t your business. Haven’t you been doing the same these past years?”“Yeah, Mom. We don’t ask where you go, so why did you follow us here?”“Oh, stop it, Anthony. I didn’t follow you. I followed your—yes, I did follow you. You’re my son. I care about you.” She changed her tone mid-sentence, and I turned to Carlos, who was already looking at me, clearly just as shocked by Aaliyah’s flip-flop.“Okay, that’s

Insane is not the word for this one. I surely need to speak to Paula now more than ever, but not as a lawyer. Woman to woman. I need to understand what happened with Maggie’s father.“Derek...” I cleared my throat, remembering we were still on a call.“You don’t have much time, Valeria. You have until this weekend.”“I will help you, but you know my firm can suffer for this.”“It won’t have to. Paula is stupid. How do you think I convinced her to marry me? She won’t even know she lost everything. All you have to do is make her sign a document. She doesn’t read before signing anything.”“Great. Since it’s that easy, why can’t you make her?”“You’re her attorney. She won’t question you.”“Oh.” I sighed. He was telling the truth.“All right, so we’re good. Right?”“I need a week. I need to prepare my firm in case of a scandal. Give me until the end of next week, and I’ll have her sign whatever document you want her to sign.”“Next week Wednesday. I don’t have much time to wait.”“That wo

I dialled Rodrigo’s contact but didn't press the call button as Mrs. Roberts stopped me. “How do you think you'll win this game? What are you going to say to him?”“Mrs. Roberts—”“You didn't have a problem with Rodrigo spending time with the little girl. If you change now, he will obviously know something is up and will flip another card that we will not know how to play,” she calmly explained, and she made sense, so I locked my phone. She patted the seat next to her where I had just stood, so I slowly sat down. “What do you suggest I do?” I asked, really a bit confused.“Cookies,” she said, and I turned to the table where there was now a bowl of cookies and two cups of tea.“Mrs. Roberts, I'm not here to eat.”“I know. You needed my mind on something. I'm sure Rodrigo wasn't the topic.” She was right, so I nodded and picked up a cup of tea and a cookie.“All you have to do is stay in the game,” she said, picking up her own.“So you say I act like I don't know that Rodrigo knows?”“O

This felt like choosing between hell and hell. You can't really choose, because no matter what you pick, you still get burned. If I chose to help Paula, my identity would be exposed. The Wilsons, Rodrigo, everything would crash. But if I went with Derek, then the guilt of ripping off an innocent woman would never leave me. And besides, my firm might suffer—since when does a law firm make their client lose? "Ms. Sterling, are you still there?" A voice brought me back to reality. "Y-yes, um..." I rubbed my temples as I felt a headache forming. "Keep digging." I said, then wished them a good day and ended the call. I really needed to speak to someone. And right now, the only person I could think of was Mrs. Roberts. So, putting my phone away, I turned and left—walking out without even stopping at the receptionist. I got back to my car. After pressing the call button, I started the engine. The phone rang and was picked up after five rings. "Valentina?" "Wow, you got my name right…

Okay, this was honestly beyond insane. Why on earth would I represent someone just to make them lose? Before I could respond to Derek, Paula came to me and I had to hang up quickly.“Mrs. Clarke, how good to see you well,” I said, clearing my throat.“Thank you, Ms.?” she seemed to forget my name again.“Sterling. No problem. So, how can I help you?” I asked, my hands playing with Parker’s pigtails just so I wouldn’t lose it.“Can I speak to you?” she asked, and I looked back and saw Tina looking our way. “Private.”“Of course. Um, Tina, please take Parker to Fiona’s office,” I said, and Parker, without giving me a hard time, kissed my hand before giving hers to Tina, who then led her away.I then asked Paula to follow me and led her to my office.“Here we are,” I said, removing my coat. “So, how are you?” I asked as I took my seat and she took hers. Of course, the first thing I did was alert the system to keep an eye on my office. She had a gun yesterday, and even when I knew she was
