Kabanata 1

Chapter 1

The gala was full of faces I didn’t want to know. The air inside the ballroom was heavy, smelling of expensive lilies and the sharp, metallic scent of old money. My dress, I had designed myself, a pale, shimmering silk piece that caught the light like water, felt like a second skin, but it couldn't hide my distress in the moment.

"Smile, Ariana," my mother, Ruby, whispered as she slipped past me, unlinking her arm with a man whose name I couldn't remember. "Tonight is about making connections. Your fashion brand won't grow if you’re hiding in the shadows."

I nodded, forced a smile, and took a sip of champagne I didn't want. She made her way in the crowd, laughing with people she’d known for ten minutes as if they were her soulmates. That was her gift. Mine was different. I knew how to disappear.

I was twenty-two, and my world felt like it was made of glass, beautiful, but always one second away from shattering. Sometimes I wished I was somewhere I wasn't 'Ariana the designer' or 'Ariana the daughter.' I wanted to be no one.

I slipped out onto the large stone balcony that overlooked the sleeping streets of Florence. The city was beautiful at night, a sprawl of orange lights and ancient shadows. I leaned against the cold marble railing, closed my eyes and let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for hours.

"It’s too beautiful out here to be looking so miserable."

The voice came from the dark corner to my right. It was a smooth deep and a low rumble that made the hair on my arms stand up.

I opened my eyes and turned. He was leaning against the stone railing, a glass of amber liquid in his hand. He wasn't wearing a tuxedo like the other men inside. His black dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms that looked like they were carved from marble.

He was strikingly handsome. A sharp jawline, dark hair swept back carelessly, and eyes that seemed to see right through the silk of my dress. He looked like power personified.

"Maybe I am," I whispered, my voice caught in my throat. "Is it that obvious?"

He stepped out of the shadows. He moved with a grace that was almost predatory. "Only to someone doing the same thing."

He stopped a few feet away from me. He was tall, looming over me in a way that should have made me step back, but I didn’t. I wanted to see what he would do. He was close enough for me to smell sandalwood, expensive tobacco, and something uniquely masculine from him. The perfect scent that promises safety and danger all at once.

"I’m Lucas," he said. He didn't offer a last name. Neither will I.

"Ariana," I replied, my heart starting to drum a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

"Ariana," he repeated. The way he said my name slowly, like he was tasting it, sent a shiver straight down my spine that had nothing to do with the cold. "You don't belong in there, Ariana, you're too real for that room."

"And you?" I asked, finding a spark of courage. "Do you belong?"

He let out a dry laugh. "No. I don’t belong there. I’m just the man who keeps the lights on."

I didn’t understand what he meant by that, and I cared less.

He stepped closer, closing the gap between us until there was barely an inch of air left. I could feel the heat radiating off his body. He reached out, his hand hovering near my face before his fingers finally brushed a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch was electric. My skin burned where he touched me.

"You're trembling," he murmured, his dark eyes searching for mine.

"It's cold," I lied.

A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth, a dark, knowing look. He knew I was lying. He didn't pull his hand away. Instead, his thumb traced the line of my jaw, moving slowly toward my chin. Every nerve in my body was screaming. I had never felt a pull like this. It was like he was a magnet and I was nothing but iron.

"Is it?" he asked softly. He leaned down, his breath hot against my ear. "Because you feel like fire to me."

The tension was so thick I could almost taste it. I looked up at him, at the raw hunger in his expression. He wasn't hiding it. He wanted me, and he didn't care that we were strangers. At that moment, I realized I wanted him too. I wanted to forget the gala, the business, and the pressure of being perfect. I wanted to lose myself in the darkness he was offering.

"I don't want to go back inside," I whispered, my eyes fixed on his lips.

Lucas’s gaze darkened. He wrapped his hand around the back of my neck, his fingers tangling in my hair. His grip was anything but gentle; it was possessive. "Then don't. Come with me."

"Where?"

"Anywhere," he said, his voice dropping gravelly low. "My place. A hotel. The middle of the street. I don't care, as long as I don't have to share you with that crowd for another second."

He leaned in, his nose brushing against mine. The world around us faded away. The music from the ballroom, the clinking of glasses, the laughter all became white noise. There was only him.

I reached up, my hands trembling as I touched his chest. His heart was beating just as fast as mine. That realization gave me the final push. I didn't want to talk anymore. I didn't want to be smart or cautious.

"Take me," I breathed, “Take me away from here before I change my mind."

Lucas didn't need to be told twice. He grabbed my hand, his grip firm and unyielding, and led me off the balcony. He moved fast through the side halls and out into the street.

A black car sat idling at the curb, its headlights cutting through the dark. He opened the door for me, and I slid into the leather seat. The interior of the car smelled like him, rich and masculine. As he rounded the car and climbed into the driver’s seat, the silence between us was heavy with everything we weren't saying.

He didn't start the car immediately. He sat there for a moment, his hands gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. He turned to look at me, his eyes hooded and dark.

"Once we leave this curb, Ariana, there's no going back," he warned. "I’m not a good man. And I don’t play fair."

I looked at him, feeling a strange sense of peace amidst the chaos of my heart. "I’m not looking for a good man tonight, Lucas. I'm just looking for you."

He didn't say another word. He slammed the car into gear and floored it. The engine roared, a powerful, violent sound that matched the energy buzzing in the air between us. We flew through the dark streets of Florence, the ancient buildings passing by in a blur of stone and shadow.

I reached over, resting my hand on his thigh. I felt the muscle tense under my touch. He let out a jagged breath, his jaw tightening. "You have no idea what you're doing to me."

I didn't answer. I didn't have to. We both knew that this night we were two strangers running toward a cliff, where neither of us wanted to stop.

We finally pulled up to a private villa hidden behind high walls. Lucas cut out the engine, leaving us in a silence so loud it felt like a physical weight. Lucas reached across the seats, took my face in his hands, and pulled me close to him, his forehead resting against mine.

"Tonight," he whispered, "nothing else exists. Just you and me. No names, no pasts, no rules…"

"...Just this." I completed.

He kissed me then, a hard, desperate kiss that tasted like whiskey and long-overdue dark promises.

He unlocked the front door and pulled me inside the dark penthouse. My heart raced with a tiny shiver of fear, but it was drowned out by the overwhelming heat of his touch, and the way my name sounded when he said it.

I was definitely looking forward to the rest of the night.
