V A L E R I A

I knew right away that Rodrigo was behind this. I wasn’t exactly sure how, but his loan offer just came too conveniently.

How is it that someone offers me a loan—and just when I think I don’t need one, I suddenly do, all within a few hours?

As a lawyer, I knew he had something to do with it, and to confirm my theory, I sent him a message proposing dinner. He didn’t respond right away, which made me doubt myself a little. I mean, he did know a lot about situations like this. And besides, he was convinced I wasn’t Valeria.

I gave him about half an hour before I called. He picked up. I asked for his answer and he agreed—dinner Friday. Skipping a day now made me realize he had no clue.

After the call, I drove them to the mall. I wanted to get a proper dress for the dinner. Parker got a few items, same as Maggie, and after shopping I drove them home.

We were now making dinner. I didn’t have much time since I had to work on the governor’s case, so I made potatoes and noodles.

I would’ve said he was calling because he knew I was Valeria, but not only did his voice sound like a troubled man, he introduced himself. My father never plays games.I moved the phone from my ear, took a calming breath, and raised my hand to wipe a tear that had fallen. No, I wasn’t crying, but hearing his voice after all these years… kind of made me emotional. Even when I had trained to be this professional, I still couldn’t stop the tears.“All right, Mr. Wilson,” I said, my voice coming out so normal it surprised even me. “How can I help you?”“I might be in legal trouble, and I heard the Governor praising you today… How you helped with her divorce.”“Yes, of course,” I nodded, wiping another tear with shaky fingers. I really had to work on my emotions for this man.He was nothing but cruel to me. I’m sure he only gave me the money so I could remain alive and be useful when needed.“How’s an hour?”“An hour?”“Yes. I just need advice on the matter. Don’t worry, I read the terms,

After mentally preparing myself to face Aaliyah, I instructed Tina to buy flowers and send them to Presley’s company as a thank you.If you’re wondering where I got the money from since I was broke and only had about two hundred thousand in the company business, well, I had cash. About fifty thousand.I always had backups, just in case. And as someone who grew up with money, I knew all the safe places to store it. And if I remember correctly, I bought about two hundred thousand in crypto six years ago, and I haven’t really paid attention to it, but I’m sure it multiplied.“The Governor comes in in an hour, and we have a new client after lunch. Oh, and Mr. Clarke is scheduled for next week.”“Derek?” I wasn’t surprised, but I thought he would call me first.“Yes, ma’am. If you want, I can postpone him.”“No, I’m just… Of course, we are not postponing him. Clients are what we want. The earlier we settle at least five cases, the better for us. Now, could you please give Mr. Roberts a cal

I kept chuckling to myself as I opened the call app and dialed Carlos’s number. He picked up on the fifth ring — I knew that was on purpose.“Alright, you sure know how to get my attention, don’t you?” I said as soon as he picked up.“Hello to you too, Ms. Sterling.”“Quit that Ms. bullshit. What am I seeing? Why was five million deducted from my account?”“Oh, they did it. See, I’ve been trying to reach you all day but you just don’t pick up your calls, do you?”“That doesn’t answer my question, Carlos. What’s going on?”“Well, since you insist, I’ll explain. See, I was doing some calculations including all the cases we handled, and not only did you rob the firm from the commissions made, you also directly took five million from the firm’s funds.”“What?!” This was insane. I would never do that. “This is absurd, you know I could never do such a thing.”“We found out you bought your own firm in Atlanta, so you can see how much of a coincidence this is.”“Carlos, I make ten million in

With the way Carlos and I ended things, how he insulted me, I wasn’t even sure I could speak to him anymore. And honestly, I didn’t care if it was about my check — I wasn’t interested in that money. So I ended the call and took a sip of my wine.He called back, but he was wasting his time. I was about to block him when I heard a knock on the door. Alright, I wasn’t expecting anyone, so I wondered who it was. But I got up and went to the door. I almost closed it when I saw who it was — but he held it back.“Let me explain, please.”It was Christian. He looked regretful, and to be fair, he was just trying to protect me and I couldn’t lose him.“You really pissed me off, Christian,” I said, walking in. I felt him follow.“I know, and I’m sorry. But you have to understand, I was doing this for your own good.”“You also have to understand that I’ve got this. I want to find my mother, Christian, and it won’t happen if you keep standing in my way.” I reached for a bottle of wine and poured t

Okay, I should probably convince Miles to raise Russell’s salary—but not now. Right now, I had a son to advise. Without responding to Valentina’s message—because I knew that would only make her more anxious—I shoved my phone into my pocket and walked up to Anthony.“Anthony.”“I fucked up, Dad, I—”“You didn’t fuck up.”“What?”“As long as she’s still here, you didn’t fuck up. Next time you see her, tell her exactly how you feel and see what happens.”“Dad, I can’t do that. You know my friends... I can't. I’ll apologize, but I’m not going out with her. She’s not in my league.”“Well…” I sighed. “I guess I’m not good at this dad stuff.” I gave up.“You’re terrible,” he muttered, but smiled. “Still… thanks. It feels good talking about it to someone.” He clapped me on the back before walking out.I exhaled and reached for my phone, rereading Valentina’s message. She really asked to meet for dinner. I mean, sure, I expected that—but part of me thought she’d try to be stubborn just to prov
