GENE CAME BY a few hours after Jean and Kelvin left. She was no longer intoxicated and groggy, but she still had a tired look in her eyes as I let her into the house.

"Cold water?" I offered and she nodded.

"Your best friend, Miss Emily," she said after accepting the cup. "Have you spoken with her since the wedding?"

I smiled, nodding. "She is on her honeymoon in Hawaii. I spoke to her this morning, and she sounded like she was having a lot of fun."

"You don't sound like you are happy," Gene said slowly.

I smiled sadly. "Of course I'm happy," I replied. "But I can't help but feel something like resentment. You know. Emily is married now, and I am sure she is going to remain married to Adam forever. They are so perfect together. She got it right on her first trial..." My voice broke off.

Gene nodded, encouraging me to keep on talking, and I did.
