AVERY

AS THE NIGHT approached, I began feeling a bit of hesitation in my mind. I knew it had given my word to Gene and Jackson that I would be attending the festival, but as the day went on, and I saw more people arriving, I realized how big the party was.

It was like a party closely knitted people, and I was an outsider. I peeked at the window as children ran across the streets, welcoming the new arrivals.

I held my scarf around my neck, deciding that I was not going anymore. I would not be missed.

DUSK CAME QUICKLY, but the energy in the town did not reduce. If anything, it even increased. The streets were well lit by colorful glowing balloons and I could begin hearing some music coming from the square on the next street.

I had resigned myself to a lonely night, when my door burst open and Gene came in. Half of her face was painted and she was filled with an animated excitement. "What are you still doing here?" She asked. "The party is starting."

I shook my head, uncertainly. "I don

THE NEXT DAY, Clarance reached for her phone as soon as she woke up. As expected, there was an address from an unknown number. She was suddenly in a good mood as she got out of bed. She had a long warm bath. When she came out, Martin was awake. He had come in the night after Clarance was asleep, and he hadn't touched her. He looked at her with a suspicious frown on his face. "Where are you going?" He asked. Whenever Clarance was happy like this, it meant she was not up to any good."I have an appointment this morning," She replied, drying her hair in front of the mirror."An appointment," he repeated. "Which appointment?""Since when did you start monitoring my movement, Martin?" Clarance asked. "I said I have an appointment, just take my word for it and trust me, okay?" She leaned in and kissed his cheek before walking to the room that housed her clothes.Martin was still very suspicious. He had been with Clarance long enough to know when she was up to no good, and this was one of su

CLARANCE DID NOT expect Laura to be productive in finding where Avery was, so she decided to take matters into her hands without involving Laura. She was in a spa, receiving a pedicure and planning when her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID, It was Janice who was no doubt calling for an update on the task.Clarance was very tempted to let the phone ring out without picking up, but she could not. So she reluctantly answered, "Hello?""Hello, darling," Janice said sweetly. "You sound like this is a bad time to call."Clarance knew better than to agree that it was a bad time. If Janice called you at a bad time, the time immediately became a good time."No," clarance shook her head. "I'm just at the spa, having my manicure and pedicure...""OH, that's great," Janice replied. "We all have to look our best always. I am proud of you." She paused for a while before continuing with, "About the letter in asked you to deliver... what progress have you made?"Clarance sighed, rolling her e

NADIA HELD HER stomach with one hand and held the pregnancy test stick with another. She was struggling to control her breathing."Miss Petrovna," her doctor said from behind her. She turned away from the window, tucking the stick into her palm as she waited for the doctor's report. "I'm afraid it is negative," the doctor said, handing her a piece of paper. She scanned through the paper quickly and dropped it on her table. So it was all futile. It was all in vain. Nothing had worked. The pregnancy stick did not lie."I did not see a reason why you called," the doctor said softly. His eyes went to. "Those sticks are about accurate 99% of the time."She looked away. She had hoped that her case would be the rare 1% of the time they were not correct. She did not let the doctor know of the dozen others that were in her bathroom trash. She had been checking, hoping for a miracle."I can see just how much you want it..." he said, pushing his circular glasses up the bridge of his nose.Nadia

LAURA'S MIND WAS troubled slightly as she got into the car with clarance. Her hand was in her bag, holding the rejected bank card. She ran her fingers over the sides of the card, thinking of what could have happened if the fat man had not come to her rescue. She glanced over at Clarance, who seemed to be having the time of her life. A part of Laura's mind warned her that Clarance had been trying to set her up in the restaurant, but another part of her mind remembered that Clarance has brought out her own card. But was it to pay for just herself and leave Laura out to be humiliated?Or was she going to pay for both of them and save them the embarrassment? Those were the question that Laura asked herself but could not come to a definite answer. She looked out the window, imagining herself as a part of the Emerald women society. Her long dream since she knew about them 5 years ago. She had tried different tactics to get their attention to her - getting married to billionaire Dante Vale,

"MA'AM, THE BILL..." the waiter said, coming back after Laura and Clarance had eaten for almost 30 minutes.Clarance glared at him for a second before she snarled. "Can't you see a card on the table? Use it for crying out loud."The waiter nodded, bowing slightly as he picked up the card from the table. He slid it into the machine and said their total bill. "Can I charge it to this card?""Duh!" Clarance rolled her eyes. "You are holding the card and still asking me dumb questions." She noticed Laura was not looking very confident, so she stretched out to take her hand. The waiter inputted the bill, and pressed some buttons. He stood, waiting for some seconds before he cleared his throat softly and said in a small voice. "Ma'am... the card is not authorized to make this transaction."Clarance slowly froze, her eyes never leaving Laura's as she asked, "What do you mean by that?""This transaction is not being cleared by the bank, or the financial secretary of whoever owns this card." LAURA COULD FEEL the power dynamics shifting under her foot as soon as she found out that Clarance was not a member of the society of Emerald women. The society was the top hierarchy in this part of the state, and the major dream of almost every woman in the city. Every woman married to a billionaire must have had a dream of belonging to that group of women, but it was strictly by invitation. No one knew anything about the society, their meetings were secret, their members were secret, but everyone knew how powerful they were. They worked underground and away from the spotlight. Laura was one of the women whose dream was to belong there. She thought that when she became a very successful model, she would be invited immediately, but her career flopped, just as her marriage was flopping too. She fought back the tears, not wanting to give Clarance the satisfaction, and ruin her make up. "You-" her voice was hoarse, so she cleared her throat. "You are a part of them now..." she tried
