[Asher]

My throat bobbed the moment that word left Elena's lips.

Don't get me wrong. Of course, I do not feel pity toward her. She's evil. Someone who could go as far as wanting her sister dead, someone like her can still do anything.

But even when I tried to hold back, my eyes darted down to her stomach as it vibrated alongside her whole body.

Her whole body shook as she took a steady step forward, tears rolling down her face.

"You can't do this, Asher. I beg you, I did everything you all wanted. But please, I can't...I can't," she mumbled.

My chest tightened instantly, and I opened my mouth but Vienna's voice cut through, reminding me that she was still in this room.

"Don't tell me you're about to fall for this crocodile tears?" Vienna snapped, tears rolling down her own cheeks.

The living room suddenly felt too small as my hand tightened in my pants pocket.

"She has a plan!" Vienna spat. "Can't you see it? She...,"

Elena cut her off, her gaze bouncing between us. "Don't do this Vi

[Elena]My heart was thumping loudly as I walked down the stage.Hands were still joining together as I made my way towards my seat, only for my eyes to falter for a second, locking with someone I was trying so hard to avoid. From where I was standing I could see the surprise in his eyes and the way his brow creased, I didn't bother staring beside him because I could see who was with him from my peripheral vision.Averting my eyes from him, I made my way back to my seat. I had barely settled down when Aurora giggled."Miss Elena, you did amazing. I'm so proud of you." she smiled and I turned toward her, my lips curling into a smile."Thank you so much Aurora," I mumbled. Before I could turn back to the stage, I noticed an older man beside me with a smile all over his face."Miss Elena," the older man called softly offering me his hand. "Your words were magnetic. That was amazing. We need more people like you in our communities."I smiled softly and slipped my hand into his for the bri

[Asher]I had my gaze fixed on just one person and that was none other than Raphael Thorne. I made sure to watch every one of his movements, of course without making it obvious. He was seated with his twin brother Matteo Thorne who has made a name for himself in entertainment. Matteo is currently one of the highest-paid actors in the whole of the United States."You seem distracted," Vienna's sultry voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I glanced at her, flashing her a smile before taking a slow sip from my wine. Just before I could respond to her, the emcee's voice boomed out again, this time louder."And lastly, among our distinguished guests this evening, we are proud to recognize Miss Elena, CEO of El Interiors. Recently, she transformed a home once shadowed by grief into a sanctuary of light and peace for former Governor Reynolds, reminding us all that creativity is not merely aesthetic, but a force that can heal, inspire, and transform lives. Miss Elena, if you’re here with us, w

[Elena]For a second, the air around me suddenly shifted. I couldn’t explain it. My fingers tightened briefly around the stem of my glass, but I kept my eyes on the stage, refusing to turn.Beside me, Aurora sat still, her tablet open on her lap.I let out a quiet breath and smoothed my dress against my legs, willing the strange feeling to pass. Tonight was about opportunity, not distraction. The gown had been Natalia’s choice, she said it was perfect. The deep sapphire silk hugged my figure and flowed to the floor, the off-shoulder neckline and subtle beading catching the light with every movement. A slender diamond cuff glimmered on my wrist, adding a quiet touch of luxury.I took a deep breath as I tried to resist the direction my mind kept drifting. The gala buzzed with life. Guests in tailored tuxedos and glittering gowns drifted between tables, laughing quietly, champagne glasses clinking in soft celebration. Expensive perfumes mingled in the air making the space feel alive.I h

[Asher]"You look so good baby," I lifted Vienna's hand and pressed a soft kiss against her palmsVienna's face warmed, a blush creeping in as she tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear. "Thanks, love. You’re as handsome as ever. Sometimes it feels like we’re still in those first days we started dating." Vienna smiledI swallowed, an unsettling feeling tightening in my chest at her words. I brushed it off quickly, forcing a smile. "We should get going." She nodded, flashing me another smile. My eyes trailed down her body—she was draped in a sleek, floor-length black gown that shimmered subtly under the lights, the kind of dress that normally made my throat dry, my pulse spiking at the daring slits that revealed just enough leg.But tonight, as I stared, I felt nothing. I dragged my eyes back up her body one more time, hoping for that familiar fire, but it wasn’t there.I pushed the thoughts aside, holding her hand tightly as we walked toward the white limousine. One of my drive

[Elena]A few days later....The instant I stepped into Boston, my heart skippedI swallowed so hard, trying to push down the lumps that made their way to my throat. My eyes darted from one side to the other as I tried to control my pounding heart.I can't believe I'm standing in the same city I swore not to lay my feet in ever again. The air around me felt wrong, you know the refreshing breath you usually take when you step off a plane? This one felt heavy, almost bitter.I bit down on my lips, struggling to catch my breath, when Aurora's voice cut through my thoughts."Miss Elena. We need to get going," Aurora said softly. I turned to stare at her. The smile on her face was radiant, she couldn't stop singing in my ears about how happy she was for this trip."Sure," I said softly following behind her.My hand tightened on my luggage as we strode towards the black SUV that Aurora had arranged earlier. As we got closer to the car, my eyes shifted to Aurora who was still beaming. [Elena]"You need to listen to me!" Natalia snapped for the umpteenth time since she walked into my quiet office.I took a deep breath, my eyes shifting from the laptop in front of me, back to my best friend who had made it a duty to steal my peace away today."Natalia, I don't want to return to Boston!""But it's just an event, it's not like you're relocating back there," she snapped again, and seriously I was holding myself not to snap back at her.She of all people should understand me. Boston is a no-no. I don't care what it could bring to me, but there are people I've sworn to avoid until my last breath and there was no way I was going to take chances of running into them.Especially him, because there was no way Asher Langston—owner and CEO of Langston Holdings wouldn't be attending a Gala that would be held in his city."Listen to me Elena," Natalia's voice suddenly went low. She stood up from where she was seated and rounded my table, making herself comfortable on my desk."I
