The music played low in the background, but no one was listening anymore.

Hayden and Hilda stepped in fully. Hilda walked in like it was her runway, her dress was tight and revealing. More suited for a nightclub than a quiet house gathering. Her hand clung to Hayden’s, and together they looked like the kind of couple a magazines would feature under “Couple of the Year.”

Kristen leaned toward Crystal and muttered something under her breath. Crystal didn’t respond and just grabbed the snack tray and started rearranging biscuits like her life depended on it.

Michael scratched the side of his neck, gaze darting to Briella, then back to the pair that just walked in.

Hilda offered a wide smile as she waved at Leslie and Michael. Then, she turned her attention to Briella.

Hayden stepped forward first, hesitating. “Briella.”

Briella was calm but her icy face echoed through the room. Her body didn’t move, except for her fingers tightly wrapped around the throw pillow on her lap, knuckles pale

The front door slammed open. Briella turned her head in shock.“Briella!”Lex’s voice thundered through the house before he even appeared in the hallway. His coat was barely on, he had just left her villa and now he's back again. Behind him, David stepped in, his gun holstered but eyes sharp and scanning every corner.Jaylen stepped aside without needing to be told.Lex was at Briella’s side in two strides.“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” His hands gripped her shoulders, eyes raking over her like he needed to physically confirm she was still breathing.“I’m fine,” she said, pressing her chest as she took a deep breath. Even though she wasn’t sure she belonged there anymore.“She’s shaken,” Jaylen added. “But not physically hurt.”David crouched near the shattered glass. “They threw the rock clean through. Not an amateur.”Lex’s jaw clenched as he turned toward the window. “Where were the guards?”“One of them followed the intruder on foot,” Jaylen answered. “The other came back in to c

“No, I don’t,” she said, but even she wasn’t sure she believed it.Briella didn’t wait for them to ask any further questions. Briella eagerly changed the subject.“Why was Leslie looking at you like that Kristen?”Crystal turned, eyes lighting up. “Oooooh. Spill it.”Kristen’s eyes widened. “What? I don't know what you're talking about!”Crystal laughed, loud and teasing. “You definitely did something.”Kristen groaned. “Okay, he just asked me to go out. That’s all, nothing else.”They both eyed her.“Mmhmm. We’ll see,” Crystal smirked. “Law school reunion turned rom-com.”Kristen rolled her eyes, but her blush gave her away. They giggled like the old days.Leslie is a lawyer like the girls. Even though he practised law because of his father. They all went to the same law school. The clock ticked past midnight.Kristen and Crystal were curled on the couch, half asleep and talking about Crystal’s not so secret crush on Leslie. The living room lights had been dimmed, the warmth of their

“Talk now,” David growled, his voice rough with restrained fury. The barrel of his gun didn’t waver.Jaylen lifted both hands slightly, not in surrender, but in peace. “Fine,” he said, his tone calm but hinted with exhaustion. He had no intention of fighting. He told David everything, though not in totality but everything that now seemed obvious. About Hayden, about being twins and separated at birth, Briella being his first love and how he could never stand by and watch her walk blindly into danger.“She’s not just some woman,” Jaylen said quietly. “She’s everything.”David’s jaw clenched. “And do you know the person after her?”Jaylen hesitated. “We don’t know who yet. But we are close.”The room fell silent.David slowly lowered the gun and rubbed a hand over his mouth, letting out a low, disbelieving chuckle. “So all this was happening right under my damn nose.”“I was careful,” Jaylen muttered, not as a boast but an admission of guilt. They didn’t shake hands nor didn’t trust eac

David got information on the hide out of the gang that kidnapped Lauren's sister and they planned to strike. The small house downtown looked inhabitable from the outside, it had cracked walls and dead light bulbs but David knew better. He stepped out of the van with a bulletproof vest secured and a gun in his hands, his men were already taking positions, they strategically surrounded the house. A nod from David, and the front door exploded open."Everyone, hands where I can see them!" voices roared. The men knew the in and out of the place bolted even faster than their shadows. Three dashed out the back, two ran over the side fence. There was an order to bring the bad guys alive so David’s men were extra careful not to kill anyone. There was an exchange of fire and pursuit. The bad guys were professional and already used to the area so they disappeared with the blink of an eye.Only one of them got caught. He was young, probably in his early twenties. Sweat beads formed on his forehe

Jaylen hadn’t expected this, as far as he knew, Hayden wasn’t even in the city that day let alone standing here, breathing the same air as him, staring down at Briella like he belonged in the room. And the worst part was that he didn't disguise because he was so sure.“I should be asking you that,” Jaylen said at last, voice quiet but cold. His posture was stiff, his knuckles pale as he clenched the railing of Briella’s hospital bed.Hayden took a half step forward. “This is my…”He stopped himself, the word getting tangled in his throat. My what, my woman or my responsibility? Those words didn't even make sense.“I’m here for her,” he said instead.Jaylen’s jaw twitched. “So am I.”Their eyes locked. And for a second, the room shrank. They had the same broad shoulders. The same height, same sharp jawline and eye shape. The kind of resemblance that wasn’t born out of coincidence.Hayden’s brows furrowed as he studied the man in front of him. “Who are you?” he asked again.Jaylen hesit
