The Next Morning

Jaylen and Briella lay tangled in the sheets, their bodies warm and bare under the soft morning light.

Briella stirred first then her eyes opened.

Her body felt sore but her limbs ached in the most satisfying way, a dull throb of pleasure nestled between her thighs. The scent of Jaylen filled her nostril, grounding her in a moment she wasn’t ready to leave.

Jaylen’s arm was draped lazily over her waist, his breath steady against the back of her neck.

She didn’t move, just lay there listening to his steady breathing, feeling the way their fingers had somehow intertwined during the night. Her thumb moved gently over his knuckles.

Jaylen mumbled something into her skin, tightening his grip like even in sleep, he didn’t want to let her go.

Her lips curved into a smile.

She turned to face him, her movement careful. Her eyes traced the sharp lines of his cheekbones, now softened in sleep. The crease between his brows was gone, his lips slightly parted.

Her gaze drifted lo

Briella’s lips crashed into his.It wasn’t gentle, nothing about it was. The force of it punched the air from his lungs. Her fingers knotted in his shirt like she’d been starved for this… for him. His hand found her waist, sliding up to her back, dragging her closer until she was flush against him, she could feel his heartbeat hammering into her chest and every bit of him.His lips were warm and they moved together like they’d been here a thousand times in their heads but never dared in reality. This wasn’t a kiss, it was years of pain, loss, and words they’d both buried too deep to say aloud. Her fingers tangled in his hair, tugging hard. His teeth caught her bottom lip, and she gasped into his mouth. That sound lit something reckless in him. He deepened the kiss, his tongue finding hers, taking her like he’d forgotten how to breathe without her.She met him with the same hunger. The kind of hunger that said I never stopped wanting you. I tried and I failed.By the time they tore apa

Michael looked between them and smiled faintly. “Because Hayden is madly in love with Briella.”Kristen blinked. Crystal choked on her drink. Then they turned to each other and burst out laughing.“Not only did you say he’s in love,” Crystal gasped between giggles, “you added madly?”“Funniest thing I’ve heard all day,” Kristen said, wiping a tear from her eye.“It’s true,” Leslie chimed in, his tone certain.Kristen and Crystal froze mid laugh. “Are you guys serious?” they asked in unison.Michael nodded. “Dead serious. Hayden loves her. He would do anything to keep her safe . So yeah, she’s in good hands.”Kristen frowned. “When? How? He served her a divorce.”“And he’s dating someone too,” Crystal added.Michael just shrugged. “There are things we can't say and maybe only Hayden can answer them.”***In the car, Briella pressed a torn piece of her dress against Hayden’s bleeding arm. Blood soaked through quickly. Her hands trembled. She didn’t care that they were so close. But Hayd

Leslie and Michael hadn’t wronged her, and for that, Briella held no resentment. Whatever storm was brewing in her chest wasn’t their fault. So Briella kept whatever pain she carried tucked away. They didn’t deserve her bitterness.“You guys are welcome to join us,” she murmured, her voice soft, slightly above the music in the background. It was all she could manage, pretending to be okay.Hayden’s eyes stayed locked on her. She could feel them burning into her skin, but she didn’t care or acknowledge him at least, that’s what she told herself. Deep down, she blamed him. If their marriage hadn’t fallen apart, maybe… just maybe none of this would be happening and she wouldn't feel so lost. She grabbed the glass in front of her and downed a long gulp of alcohol, letting the bitterness bite her throat. She wanted it to burn, wanted to feel anything other than the ache curled up in her chest.Minutes later, the pressure in her bladder grew.“I need to use the restroom,” she muttered, sett

Briella knew that she wasn't safe. Not after what she saw on Jaylen’s phone too.So she drove straight to the C & K law firm. The firm her best friends had built from scratch. A large, bold plaque gleamed at the entrance: C & K Legal Practitioners. It was her first time stepping in.She didn’t call or give them heads up, she just prayed that they should be around because she needed them now.Inside, the place was busy, phones ringing, printers humming, suited staff moving with purpose. It was hard to believe that just a few months ago, this was just a dream over coffee and late-night brainstorming sessions. Now, they are one of the fastest-rising firms here, no news about these ladies being one of the best in London. But she wasn’t here for the success story. She was here because she had nowhere else to go.Kristen’s assistant smiled apologetically. “Someone’s with her at the moment.”Crystal wasn’t around either.Briella sat quietly in the waiting area, hands clasped tightly in her

WARNING: This scene contains some explicit content.Briella swallowed an invisible lump in her throat, she didn’t move away nor speak.Because her eyes, which were wide and dark, already answered. His lips hovered just above hers, longing. Her hands slid to his chest, not pulling him, just feeling his heart beat. Their pulse increased with unspoken promises and unhealed pain all mixing into one dangerous desire.“Jaylen…” she whispered. But he was already leaning in.Her breath hitched. His fingers pressed firmer against her waist, pulling her slowly until her body was pressed against his. Her skin burned where he touched her, searing through the thin cotton of her crop top. His hands slid lower, grazing her bare back.Briella tilted her head up just enough for their lips to brush. That was all it took.Jaylen kissed her hard and deep His lips devoured hers, claiming, tasting, breathing her in like a hunger that had been simmering for too long. She melted into him.
