Alexander’s POV

I glare at Susan, waiting for her to explain herself. Her shoulders stiffen as she begins, “Sir…” She pauses, takes a deep sigh, and continues cautiously, “We received a message that you had requested the cancellation of the order and to stop the shipment.”

Her voice wavers slightly, but the words hit me like a blow.

“What?” I voice out, the single word carrying enough weight to silence the thoughts swirling in my head. I feel an ache of distress tightening in my chest. What the fuck are they playing at? I was expecting delays at worst—not a cancellation.

I scoff, frustration and anger simmering. “What the hell do you mean by that, Susan?” My voice is sharp, slicing through the tense air.

Susan places a tablet forward with trembling hands. “It’s the message, sir,” she says, her words faltering as I snatch the device.

The screen shows the message. It’s from me—or at least, it looks like it’s from me. My grip tightens around the edges of the tablet as the realization sin

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    256 Home Again

Isabel’s POVIt’s the evening of the next day.Mom arrives with the kids. Aurora’s not with them. “She had some work to finish,” Mom explains. The doctor comes in shortly after, checking my vitals one last time.“Well,” he says, pulling off his gloves, “everything looks good. You’re stable, and healing well. Just be sure to rest, and don’t skip your check-up next week.” He hands Mom a small slip. “These will help ease the pain while your shoulder heals.”Mom thanks him sincerely. The kids bounce with excitement at the news.“Finally!” Scarlett blurts out. “Mom will be out of the hospital. I’ve never liked it here anyway.”Her little voice makes me laugh. It’s true. She’s hated hospitals since she was a baby—even the mention of one made her cry.The room bursts into soft laughter. Even the doctor chuckles.“Well then,” he says, turning to her with a kind smile. “Try not to be sick, okay? That way you won’t have to come back.”Scarlett nods quickly, hugging the small toy in her hand lik

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    255 The silence between us

Isabel’s POVMy gaze drifts to the door just as it creaks open again, and Mom walks in slowly, her footsteps quieter than usual. She left just minutes ago, practically rushed out of here after taking a call. But the woman stepping back in now looks… different. There’s a heaviness in the way her shoulders slump, a shadow swimming in her eyes, like her thoughts are still far away, tethered to something she hasn’t said yet.She closes the door behind her gently, as if afraid that even the sound might break whatever thin thread she’s holding onto. I watch her closely, and our eyes lock. Her mouth forms a faint smile, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. Something’s wrong. I can feel it.“Is anything the problem, Mom?” I ask softly, my voice steady despite the way my chest tightens. She nods before she even answers, like the truth slipped out faster than she intended. “No… nothing’s wrong, dear,” she says, sitting on the edge of the bed. “I’m just… thinking about everything.”Her eyes shift to t

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    254 What I never gave her

Alexander’s POVA groan rumbles from deep in my throat as I stir awake, the world around me coming into hazy focus. Bright white light blurs at first, then slowly sharpens into the sterile view of a hospital ceiling. I jolt upright. The sudden movement sends a jab of pain through my ribs, and the room tilts for a second. My heart kicks into overdrive as I take it all in—the stiff sheets, the IV in my arm, the hospital gown. What the hell happened? How did I end up here?“Alexander…”My mother’s voice.I turn, and there she is—Sabrina King, standing just beside the bed, her face shadowed with worry. For a moment, she looks almost unrecognizable like that. Eyes slightly puffy, lips pressed tight, concern written into every sharp line of her expression. She steps closer, reaching out to steady me. “You’re not strong yet,” she says, her voice low but firm. “You should try resting more.”Her fingers graze my arm, guiding me back down gently. But I flinch, pulling away. It’s automatic.Som

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    253 The Puppetmaker

Cynthia’s POVI stand by the tall window, arms folded, imagining the smoke still lingering in the air. In my mind, the fire is fresh, the chaos still burning. A smug smile tugs at my lips. For once, everything feels still. Like victory. But the moment shatters. The door bursts open, slamming against the wall with a sharp crack. I don’t flinch. I don’t have to turn to know who it is. I can feel her presence before she speaks. My mother. Her heels scrape against the floor as she storms in. Her dress, a dark satin that fits her like armor, sways around her ankles. Her lips are drawn tight, her eyes blazing with disbelief.“Don’t tell me you had a hand in the fire burn that took place today,” she says, her voice rushed, breathless, but biting.I don’t respond. My silence stretches like a taut wire, humming with unsaid truths. I can see it in her eyes—the way they narrow, the way her shoulders stiffen. My lack of denial says more than words ever could. She exhales sharply, a sound that tea

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    252 A warning

Alexander’s POVThe moment I arrive, the world feels like it’s caving in.Red and blue lights flash against my face, slicing through the thick smoke that curls into the sky like a living thing. My eyes scan the chaos, desperate, searching for anything—any sign that Isabel is safe, that someone’s pulled her out already. But there’s nothing.Just noise. People yelling. Sirens wailing. Flames climbing higher, clawing at the sky like it’s hungry for more. My heart starts to pound.Paramedics are holding people back, barricading the building, refusing to let anyone through. I tense when I spot Christine among the crowd, her face twisted in panic, struggling against one of the responders as she tries to move past them. If she’s still here… if they’re all still out here…That means Isabel is still inside. My heart nearly stops.I look up at the building. Fire keeps spitting from the windows, glass exploding with sharp bursts that ring through my ears. Another floor collapses with a thundero

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    251 Where hope burns

Isabel’s POVI shove the door open with all the strength I have left. Heat smacks into me like a wall, thick and punishing. I stumble forward, coughing hard as smoke coils through the air—dense, choking, alive. It bleeds into everything, curling like black veins through the room, swallowing the walls, the ceiling, the floor beneath my feet. I can barely see.My chest tightens. Every breath feels like I’m inhaling fire.I reach for my pocket, for my phone—only to realize it’s not there. My gaze darts behind me. I must’ve dropped it in the room back there. A small, rectangular lifeline now lost in the chaos. My heart thunders. I hesitate, caught between going back and forging ahead. Seconds stretch. Going back could kill me. Staying here could too.I cough again, harder this time. I raise my arm and press the inside of my elbow over my nose, trying to shield myself. It barely helps. The smoke is everywhere—so thick, so fast. I stumble forward, my body trembling as I find my way to the
