Chapter 2

作者: Fierce Sleeping Dog
I almost laughed. The post had been up for barely 40 minutes, and the faculty was already trying to get me to withdraw.

They certainly knew how to handle a problem quickly. Too bad they thought I was the problem.

"I'm not signing this." I slid the form back across the desk.

"Nate, don't do anything rash," Bruce warned.

"I'm not," I replied calmly.

"Do you have any idea how badly this could affect the faculty if the situation escalates?" Bruce asked, his brows furrowing.

"I didn't spread the rumor, and I didn't cause any of this," I shot back.

Bruce's expression hardened. "We have to consider how this will reflect on the university."

"So, to protect the university's reputation, I'm supposed to admit I didn't earn my spot and give it up?" I asked.

"That's not what I'm saying," Bruce replied, his expression growing uneasy.

"Then why did you already have the withdrawal form ready?" I pressed, holding his gaze.

The office fell silent.

Outside, students chatted in the hallway, their footsteps clicking against the tiled floor.

After a few seconds, Bruce tucked the form back into his desk drawer. "Then you need to prove that the woman in the video really is your family's chauffeur."

"Fine," I replied curtly.

"And in the meantime, stay off social media, and don't let her pick you up on campus," Bruce added, giving me a pointed look.

I got to my feet. "Until the investigation is over, please don't prepare any more withdrawal forms for me."

As soon as I left the office, I called Donna Page, who answered almost immediately.

"I'm waiting for you at our usual spot, Mr. Durham."

"Donna, don't drive onto campus just yet, " I said in a low voice.

"What's going on?" she asked, sounding concerned.

I briefly explained what had happened.

Donna was quiet for a long moment. "I'll come to the school and explain everything," she insisted.

"No, it's fine," I told her. "They're doing this to get at me, and I'll deal with it myself."

Donna fell silent again.

"Just go home for now. I'll take a cab," I said.

She still sounded reluctant to leave it alone. "Should I tell Mr. Durham Sr.?"

"Dad's in the middle of acquisition talks. I'll tell him once he lands."

He was in Grendia for the next few days, and once his team entered the negotiation room, they had to surrender their phones and other communication devices.

It wasn't worth interrupting the negotiations.

Mom was even harder to reach. Her research project was undergoing a confidential review, and she'd turned off her phone.

"In that case, I'll retrieve the footage from the dashcam," Donna offered.

After I hung up, my phone buzzed again.

The official student council account had shared an article.

The article didn't name me directly. Instead, it criticized the growing role of privilege and connections in university selection.

The person who'd shared it was Mark. He even added his own caption. "There's nothing wrong with wanting to get ahead, but not at the expense of people who actually work for it."

Within minutes, people flooded the comments with messages supporting him.

It was no secret among the finance students that Mark and I were competing for the exchange program.

He'd done well last semester, but my GPA was higher.

The committee evaluated candidates based on GPA, research experience, and their final presentations. Mark was slightly behind me across the board.

But as the post gained traction, he could now portray himself as the underdog, a hardworking student whose chances had been stolen by someone with powerful connections.

The story practically wrote itself.

A hardworking, handsome campus heartthrob, robbed of his chance by a scheming rival whose sugar mama pulled the strings.

It made for a much more compelling story than an academic tran ever could.

The day before I left for my exchange program, Donna drove me to the airport. This time, she'd brought a more modest car.I sat in the back, watching the city pass by outside. "Donna?""Yeah?" she replied."You should stop driving that Bentley everywhere," I told her."Why?" she asked."People might think you're some rich socialite," I said, grinning. She glanced at me in the rearview mirror. "Then you should stop riding in my car."I raised an eyebrow. "Why?""People might think you're a sugar baby," she shot back.I stared at her for a second before bursting out laughing.Donna chuckled along with me.But once we'd settled down, my expression turned serious. "Donna, there's something I've been wanting to ask you, but I don't know if I should.""Go ahead," She encouraged me.She gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles turning white."Do you ever feel like you've had to deal with all this just because you work for my family?" I asked. She shook her head immediately. "No

Mark's face fell when he saw the man. "Dad, what are you doing here?"Caleb Stone, Mark's father, ignored Mark and walked straight over to me. "Mr. Durham, this has all been blown out of proportion."My son is young. He made a mistake. He was only trying to get a spot in the exchange program. Please, give him another chance. He's still a student…""Mr. Stone," I interrupted. "he's 21 years old."I met his gaze. "He's old enough to manage the student council's social media account, organize a petition, and pay someone to edit a video. He's old enough to understand that spreading false rumors has consequences, too."Caleb's forehead glistened with sweat. "We're willing to pay for any damages.""Paying damages isn't the same as apologizing," I replied coolly. He hesitated before asking, "Then what do you want from us?""Let the school handle it according to its policies," I said firmly.I turned to Bruce. "And let the authorities handle the rest."Bruce opened his mouth as if to

A wave of whispers swept through the auditorium.Mark held up the documents in his hand, fixing Donna with a pointed look. "How do you explain being alone with Nate at a hotel?""Mrs. Durham got out to pick up the room key while Nate was asleep in the car. I went to get his luggage," Donna explained calmly.Mark seemed to have expected that answer. "So, you admit that you and Nate have been to a hotel together," he pressed."I admit to driving him there."Mark narrowed his eyes. "And you think that's a normal relationship?'The auditorium fell silent.Donna met his gaze. "I'm their chauffeur. What's so strange about driving my employer's son to a hotel?"Mark faltered, momentarily thrown off by her response. "Then can you prove you're actually their chauffeur?"Donna pulled a folder from her briefcase. "Here's my employment contract and my social security contribution records. And here are my bank statements showing the monthly salary I receive from the Durham family."She ha

At 8:30 the next morning, Patrick and I arrived on campus.Students had gathered outside the auditorium entrance. Some were livestreaming on their phones, while others had come from different faculties just to watch the hearing.Mark sat in the front row with several student council members. He wore a crisp black shirt, and his hair was perfectly styled. The moment he saw me, he flashed a friendly smile. "Nate, where's Ms. Page?""She'll be here soon," I replied."Hopefully, we can clear up this whole misunderstanding today," Mark said pleasantly."We will," I assured him.His smile faltered when he noticed the man standing behind me. "And who's this?""My lawyer," I replied calmly."Seriously? You brought a lawyer to an internal school hearing?" Mark asked. "Isn't that a little over the top?""Someone forged my hotel records and spread private information about me," I replied, meeting his gaze without flinching. "I'd say bringing a lawyer is perfectly reasonable."The chatt

By the time I got to the hospital, Donna was already out of the ER. She had four stitches across her forehead, a hairline fracture in her left arm, and dried bloodstains on her clothes."Don't worry. I'm fine," she assured me the moment she saw me, offering a reassuring smile despite her injuries."Where's the car?" I asked."It's at the repair shop," she replied."What about the dashcam?" I asked, my expression tightening with concern.Donna's expression darkened.Apparently, someone had smashed it, and now the memory card was gone. The police initially treated it as a routine rear-end collision. But while everyone was distracted by the accident, someone had pried open the car door and taken the memory card. The only piece of evidence that could prove Mom had been in the car that night.I stood beside Donna's hospital bed, one thought running through my mind—this was no coincidence. My phone rang. Patrick's voice came through, unusually grave."Nate, the person who posted t

I pulled up my contacts and called Patrick Quimby, Durham Group's head of Legal.Patrick picked up almost immediately. "Nate?""I've got a problem," I said, getting straight to the point."How bad?" Patrick asked."Someone's spreading sexual rumors about me and faking hotel records to make them look true," I explained, my jaw tightening at the thought.I heard a chair scrape across the floor on the other end of the line."Don't delete anything, and don't reach out to whoever's behind this," Patrick instructed."I'm already saving screenshots," I assured him."That's not enough," he replied. "I'll have someone arrange for the evidence to be officially preserved."His voice remained calm and measured. "Send me everything you have. The posts, chat logs, and the accounts involved."The next morning, I'd barely stepped out of my dorm when I spotted a crowd waiting outside.Several people had their phones out, recording me. One shoved a camera so close to my face that I could bare
