The whistle blew across the pool, loud and sharp.

Samuel hit the wall first, his chest burning like fire. Water dripped down his face as he came up for air. The scoreboard blinked: 48.23 seconds. A new personal best, but Coach Miller still wasn't satisfied.

"Again!" Miller yelled from the deck. "You're still messing up that third turn. Sloppy!"

Samuel didn't bother arguing. He just swam back to start, his arms feeling like they might fall off. This was his fifth sprint since sunrise, and the day was barely starting.

The Springfield Aquatic Center was basically his whole life now. Morning training, afternoon weights, evening drills. Eat, sleep, swim, repeat. No drama. No mess. Just him and the water.

At least, that's what he kept telling himself.

"Samuel Armani!" Some reporter shouted as he got ready for another lap. "Hey! Can we get a quick word about the National Championships?"

Samuel pretended not to hear, fixing his goggles.

"Is it true you're gonna win gold in three events?"

Fatima looked different than Riley remembered.Gone was the innocent cousin who used to braid Riley's hair at family gatherings. This woman was harder, sharper. Her eyes cold as she leaned against a metal support beam, arms crossed. And beside her stood Dalton Lillard. Riley's ex-boyfriend. The swim team captain who'd dumped her seven years ago when he found out about her stealer nature."Hello, cousin." Fatima's smile didn't reach her eyes. "Long time no see."Riley's wolf snarled, recognizing the betrayal. "Where's Max?""Straight to business. How very like you." Fatima pushed off the beam, walking closer. Her hand reached for Dalton's, their fingers intertwining. "I always admired that about you, Isis. Even when we were kids. Always so serious. So responsible.""Where is he, Fatima?""Safe. For now." Fatima's gaze shifted to Samuel. "Hello, stepbrother. You're looking well. Swimming agrees with you."Samuel's jaw tightened. "Cut the crap. We brought what you asked for."Riley held

The cemetery was quieter than Riley remembered. She stood at Onika's grave, Samuel beside her, both staring at the weathered headstone. Her aunt's name carved in stone. Fatima's mother. The woman who'd loved her stepbrother Suraj until it destroyed her."You sure it's here?" Samuel asked.Riley knelt, fingers digging into the dirt beside the grave marker. "Positive."The earth was soft, recently turned. Someone had been here. Riley's heart hammered as she dug deeper, her nails scraping against something solid.A metal box. Small, waterproof, exactly where she'd buried it two years ago.She pulled it free, brushing off the dirt with shaking hands. Samuel crouched beside her, his presence solid and warm."Is that it?"Riley nodded, unable to speak. Inside this box was everything. The pact her father had died protecting. The proof that would change everything. She opened it.The document was there, perfectly preserved in plastic. Ancient paper, yellowed with age, covered in formal script

They ran.For hours, Riley and Samuel ran through Lysander's forest, their wolves finally free to be what they were meant to be. Mates. Pack. Whole.Riley had forgotten what it felt like to have four legs beneath her, to feel the earth soft under her paws, to taste the wind and smell every living thing for miles. Her wolf was drunk on freedom, on Samuel's presence beside her, on the simple joy of existing without fear.Samuel's wolf was larger, faster, but he kept pace with her easily. Sometimes leading, sometimes following, always staying close enough that their fur brushed. Every touch sent sparks through Riley's nervous system, the mate bond singing between them.*Beautiful,* Samuel's voice echoed in her mind, warm and reverent. *You're so beautiful like this.**You can't even see me properly in the dark,* Riley teased, but her wolf preened at the compliment.*I can see everything.* His wolf bumped against hers playfully. *The way you move. The way your wolf holds herself. Proud. S

    # Chapter 75Riley's wolf didn't want to let go.Samuel's scent wrapped around her like a drug, pine and chlorine and something uniquely him that made every nerve in her body sing. Her claws dug into his shoulders, not hard enough to break skin through his shirt, but enough to anchor herself to him."Isis," Samuel's voice was rough, strained. "Baby, you need to breathe. Your wolf is taking over.""Don't care." The words came out garbled, half human, half animal. "Missed you. Missed you so much.""I know. I missed you too." His hands ran up and down her spine, trying to soothe even as his own wolf pushed at his control. She could feel it in the tension of his muscles, the way his breathing had gone shallow. "But if we don't get you somewhere safe to shift, you're going to hurt yourself."Lysander appeared at Samuel's side, his Alpha presence stronger now, more commanding. "There's a cabin in the clearing. Warded and protected. We need to move her there before the partial shift becomes

Riley made it exactly three steps out of the equipment room before her knees gave out.Sarah caught her before she hit the ground. "Whoa! Hey, are you okay? You're burning up!""I'm fine," Riley gasped, but she wasn't fine. Her wolf was going absolutely feral now that Samuel knew, now that he'd called her *mate* in that commanding Alpha voice that made her want to submit to him completely."You're not fine. You're literally shaking." Sarah helped her to a bench. "I'm calling an ambulance.""No!" Riley grabbed her wrist, probably too hard based on Sarah's wince. "No ambulances. I just need... I need air."Samuel was still in the pool, deliberately not looking at them, but Riley could feel his attention like a physical weight. Could smell his wolf riding him hard, wanting to come protect his mate. This was a disaster."I'm taking you home," Sarah said firmly, already packing up the cameras. "Come on. Can you walk?"Riley forced herself to stand, forced her legs to cooperate. Each step a
