***Bethany’s Pov***

The boatman waited on the boardwalk, and his face darkened when he saw my companion. He scowled at Jacob, then at me, and he remarked, “You must be close to him since he accompanied you up to this point.”

Liam nodded in agreement as I stated, “No, but when I told him you were coming here, he insisted on going back to the mainland with me.” For a moment, he furrowed his brows, and then I used the opportunity to approach him when Jacob wasn’t watching and whispered something into his ear. “However, I would appreciate it if you did not allow him to board the boat.” He chuckled. Jacob frowned upon hearing his laughter, which was masked by the waves.

“I like you. I mean, I like your grit.”

I winked at him and said, “I don't mind having a hot friend.”
