“If truth demands more than courage, then it will have to take it from me.”

“Prepare yourself.”

The words followed us into the dark like a hand at my back.

The passage narrowed, then dipped. The floor sloped downward, slick and cold beneath our boots. The air grew thin. Each breath tasted sharp, like metal after rain. The Thread at my chest pulsed in a steady rhythm, faster than my heart now.

Seren stayed close. We did not speak. The place did not want noise. It wanted listening.
