I expected everyone to laugh.

That's what always happened. Sara said something mean, and people laughed. It was like clockwork. Her words, their laughter, my shame. The same pattern for years.

But this time, no one laughed.

"Isn't it funny?" Sara asked again. Her voice was louder now. Sharp. "Will he survive it?"

Still nothing.
