Ella's POV

I pulled the curtain back.

Damon was standing outside my window.

My heart stopped. Then started racing. I stared at him for a second, not believing what I was seeing. He had never been to my house before. Never. In all the months we were together, he never once came here. Never offered to come over.

Now he was standing on my porch roof like it was normal.

"Can you please open up?" he asked.

I stared at him. Then I unlocked the window and pushed it open. The cold night air rushed

Ella's POVI expected everyone to laugh. That's what always happened. Sara said something mean, and people laughed. It was like clockwork. Her words, their laughter, my shame. The same pattern for years. But this time, no one laughed."Isn't it funny?" Sara asked again. Her voice was louder now. Sharp. "Will he survive it?"Still nothing.People were looking at me and Damon. Not at Sara. Not laughing. Just watching. Their eyes were on us. Not minding what crazy Sara was saying with her friends.Damon was still holding my hand. I could feel his palm against mine. Warm. Familiar. The same hand that used to hold mine in the storage room. In the dark. Where no one could see."Good morning," he said."Good morning," I said back.I looked at him. Really looked. He was tired. Dark circles under his eyes. His hair was messier than usual. Like he hadn't been sleeping. Then I noticed he was still holding my hand. I pulled away. Fast."You shouldn't have helped. I got it."That was a lie. I didn

Ella's POV"Thanks," I said, turning toward my locker.Kael was still walking behind me. I could hear his footsteps. Feel his eyes on my back. People were still staring as I walked past. Even Miss Lana, my math teacher, looked at me when I passed her in the hallway. When I turned to look back, I caught her still watching.I had never gotten that kind of attention from teachers before."I felt you weren't comfortable with me showing up yesterday night," Kael said."Why do you think so?" I opened my locker and started pulling out my books. "I wouldn't have done my science homework if not for you."That was true. My notebook had all the notes I needed. Without it, I would have been stuck.Kael leaned against the locker next to mine. "I overthink too much. So I assume things.""Good for you," I said. The words came out before I could stop them. I never talked to anyone like that. Not with that tone. Not with that edge. But Kael didn't seem bothered. He just smiled."Guess what," he said.

Ella's POV"Good morning, honey."My mom's voice pulled me out of sleep. I opened my eyes slow. The morning light was coming through my window. And my mom was sitting on the edge of my bed with clothes in her hands."Good morning, Mom," I said, stretching my arms over my head."You need to start preparing for school. You'll be late."I rubbed my eyes and sat up. Then I saw the clothes in her lap. A black top. Some jeans. Nothing special. But the way she was holding them, like they were important."What are those clothes for?" I asked. She smiled. That same smile from last night. The one that made my stomach flip."You'll find out later. Just go take your bath. Then you'll find out soon."I wanted to ask more questions. But she had that look. The one that said she wasn't going to say anything else until I did what she said.So I got up. Went to the bathroom. Brushed my teeth. Took my bath. The water was hot and it woke me up all the way. But my mind was still spinning. What was she pla

Ella's POVAfter Damon left, Kael didn't stay long.He said goodnight. I said goodnight back. That was it. He walked out of my room and I heard his footsteps go down the stairs. I didn't even walk him to the door. I just stood there in my room, holding my science notebook, listening to the front door open and close. My wolf was angry at me for that. You let him leave. You didn't even say thank you. He brought your notebook back. He came all this way.I ignored her. After a few minutes, I went downstairs to get some yogurt. My stomach was empty and the cold felt good going down. I opened the fridge and pulled out a cup. Strawberry. My favorite. When I turned around, my mom was sitting in the living room. The TV was on but low. She had a bowl of popcorn in her lap. She was watching me with that look she gets when she wants to ask something."You never once told me about any of your friends called Kael," she said.I grabbed a spoon from the drawer and walked toward the couch. "He's not a

KAEL'S POV Transferring to Moonridge High was the best thing that ever happened to me. And it's only because of Ella. I didn't know that walking through those front doors this morning would change everything. I thought it would be like every other school. Same hallways. Same faces. Same boring classes. I was only here because my dad wanted me to finish the year somewhere quiet after everything that happened with my mom. But then I saw her. She was on the ground picking up books. Sera and some other girl had just knocked them out of her hands. I saw the whole thing. The way Sera looked down at her like she was nothing. The way Ella just bent down and picked up her stuff without fighting back. And then my wolf spoke. Mate. I almost stopped breathing. My wolf had been silent for over a year. Ever since my mom died. After she passed, my wolf just went quiet. No voice. No presence. Just emptiness inside me where he used to be. I thought maybe I had lost him for good. That the grief

He put one leg through the window. Then the other. I stepped back and watched him climb into my room like he did this every day. "What happened to the front door?" I asked, crossing my arms. I didn't like this. Him being here. In my room. Where I slept. Where I kept all my things. It felt wrong. Like he was somewhere he didn't belong. Or maybe I feel this way because I'm not use to it. "I'm sorry about this." He looke
