Chapter 45: Footsteps in the Dark

The sound didn’t belong in the quiet.

It was slow. Heavy. Deliberate.

At first, I thought I imagined it. Maybe the house was settling. Maybe it was the wind.

But then it came again—closer this time.

I slid out of bed, my bare feet barely making a sound on the carpet. My pulse thudded in my ears. I reached for the door but stopped, listening.

From the hall came Daniel’s voice, low and urgent. “Did you hear that?”

Edward’s reply was just as sharp. “Stay here.”

Of course Daniel didn’t listen—his footsteps joined Edward’s as they moved toward the stairs.

I opened the door a crack, enough to see their silhouettes at the top of the grand staircase. The only light came from a lamp far below, pooling gold over the marble floor. Everything else was shadows.

The steps came again. Whoever it was, they were in no hurry.

Falco appeared from the far end of the hall, pistol drawn, his stance steady. He motioned for Edward and Daniel to freeze, then pointed toward th

  • FALLING For EDWARD   Shadows in the Daylight

Chapter 48 — Shadows in the DaylightMorning didn’t come gently. The light that seeped through Abby’s thin curtains was pale, almost cold, as if the sun itself wasn’t sure it wanted to be here. She woke to the sound of low voices—Edward’s and Daniel’s—coming from the kitchen. Their tones weren’t hostile, but there was an edge, like two men who were forcing themselves to be civil because of the woman sleeping in the next room.Abby lay there for a moment, the blanket tucked up to her chin, listening.“…already spoke to my contact,” Edward was saying. “They’ll run surveillance around the block. I want a man outside at all times.”Daniel’s voice was quieter but firm. “And what if they slip through? You’re assuming you know their pattern. I don’t like that assumption.”“It’s not an assumption,” Edward replied, his voice tightening. “It’s the best we have. Unless you have a better plan?”“I do.” Daniel’s pause was deliberate. “But it’s not one you’ll like.”Abby swung her legs over the edg

  • FALLING For EDWARD   Chapter 47

Chapter 47 The moment hung heavy between us, the sound of the rain outside filling the silence. Edward’s hand was still on my arm, his grip firm but not rough, like he was grounding me—like if he let go, I might vanish. His eyes searched mine with that piercing look that always made my chest tighten. I swallowed hard. “What did you see?” I asked, my voice low, almost swallowed by the patter against the windows. He hesitated. “Not what. Who.” The room seemed to shrink around us. My throat tightened. “You mean—” “Yes,” he cut in, his voice sharp but hushed, as if even the walls shouldn’t hear. “The same man I’ve seen before. Outside. Watching the house.” A shiver ran through me, not from the cold. Daniel’s name was at the edge of my lips, but I couldn’t force it out. I didn’t want to believe… couldn’t believe. “Are you sure?” I asked. “I’m sure.” His jaw flexed. “I caught his reflection in the window across the street. Tall. Dark hair. Just… standing there. Not moving. Waiting f

Chapter 46 – Under the Same RoofThe morning light came in soft through the curtains but it didn’t feel like a soft morning it felt heavy and strange like the house was holding its breath I woke before the alarm my eyes opening to the shape of Edward sitting at the edge of the bed his shoulders straight his back tense his head down like he’d been thinking too longYou’re awake he said without turning his voice lowI didn’t sleep much I whispered pulling the blanket around me I was still tired but my body wouldn’t rest the whole night my mind had been running between two men and the sound of every little creak in the houseEdward finally looked at me his eyes softer than his body he touched my hand briefly then stood I’ll make coffeeHe left the room and I sat there listening to his footsteps fade down the stairs there was another sound a faint movement from the living room like someone pacing I knew who it would be and my stomach knottedI came down slowly the smell of coffee drifting

  • FALLING For EDWARD   The Man Outside

Chapter 44 — The Man OutsideThe living room light was still on. The small clock on the wall ticked toward midnight, but no one moved to turn it off.Daniel sat at the edge of the couch, one arm resting lazily over the backrest, his eyes fixed on me like he was remembering something I’d forgotten. Edward sat in the armchair across from him, his posture calm but his jaw tense. His gaze never left Daniel.I sat between them, a cushion pulled into my lap, my bare feet curled under me. I felt the weight of both their eyes. Daniel’s gaze was warm, familiar. Edward’s was sharp, unreadable.I cleared my throat. “Do you guys want tea or coffee?”“No,” Edward said quickly.Daniel smiled faintly. “I’m fine.”The room felt smaller than it was. My apartment wasn’t much—one bedroom, a small kitchen, this living room—but now, with both men here, it felt like all the air had been pressed out.I stood, just to move, but Edward’s eyes followed me until I sat back down. He didn’t say anything, but I kn

  • FALLING For EDWARD   Shadows Between Us

Chapter 43 – Shadows Between UsThe night was heavy with rain. It pressed against the small apartment windows, each drop tapping like impatient fingers. Abby sat curled on the couch, her hands resting over the soft curve of her belly. The air was warm from the heater but her chest still felt cold. She told herself she was fine. She told herself she didn’t need him. But every time the thunder rolled she thought of Edward’s voice and the way he used to hold her when storms came.A sharp knock broke through her thoughts. She froze. It wasn’t the kind of knock neighbors used. It was firm. Urgent. Her heart raced. She walked to the door and peered through the peephole.Edward.His hair was wet, his coat dark from the rain. His eyes were locked on the door like he could see her through it. Abby’s breath caught in her throat. She almost didn’t open it. Almost. When she did, the cold air rushed in between them. He looked at her for a long moment, like memorizing her face again, before his gaz
